2 Work Based Learning This course is designed to guide you through your own learning to explore and reflect upon your introduction to Vascular nursing. Vascular disease presents many challenges to a nurse and this course should help you to develop a greater theoretical understanding of the complex issues that our patients face. This theory is coupled with a strong practice element that you can use to bridge the practice theory gap. This pack is designed to support you in completing the Work Based Learning module at level 3 gaining 20 credits on successful completion of the Introduction to Vascular Nursing course. It includes five learning outcomes, the last of which you will have the opportunity to guide to meet your own specific learning needs. Support and guidance will be available throughout the course to help you achieve the most from this module. You will attend the University of Southampton for a day, where you will meet with your Academic Tutor to discuss your learning outcomes and to talk over how you can meet your learning needs within the clinical setting. You will need to produce a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your learning. This will comprise of practicebased competencies and a 3,000 word Case Study incorporating the learning outcomes in this pack. There will be an example of the type of evidence at the bottom of each learning outcome. You are always welcome to discuss this with your ward manager or academic tutor. In addition, you will have 4 days identified on the off duty to be able to utilise the learning opportunities within the Vascular Ward and associated departments i.e. diagnostic imaging, theatre, tissue viability, diabetic department etc. Included in this pack is a timetable for you to record how you have utilised this time. Your Ward Manager will arrange for you to have a practice-based mentor to support you through this module.

4 Guide to Completing your Work Based Learning Module Step 1 Step 2 Discuss and agree with your ward manager your learning outcomes and how you are going to utilise your 4 days identified on the off duty Attend the introduction day with the University of Southampton and meet with your work based learning academic tutor. Please remember to take this pack with you so that you can discuss your learning outcomes. Develop a learning contract which comprises of the learning outcomes and how these will be achieved. Discuss with your ward manager or link team SSN and then adapt your own 5 th Learning Outcome Step 3 Arrange to meet your mentor and organise how you are going to utilise your time and how often you are going to meet with your mentor Step 4 Plan and organise your learning opportunities Step 5 Maintain your timetable of what learning experiences you have had during the course period Step 6 Compile your Portfolio of evidence and arrange to meet your academic tutor to review the portfolio. 5 Learning Outcome 1: Demonstrate in-depth theoretical understanding of the pathophysiology of peripheral vascular disease, management of risk factors and the nurses s role as health educator. Explore: Anatomy and physiology of the peripheral vascular system Epidemiology of peripheral vascular disease Clinical manifestations of peripheral vascular disease The impact of co-morbidities Patient assessment and screening The Vascular patient s educational needs Advising on smoking cessation Methods for delivering Patient Information Literature search Learning Opportunities: Undertake nursing assessments of vascular patients with an experienced colleague Attend teaching sessions for 3 rd and 5 th year Medical Students Observe vascular patients in different settings e.g. out-patients, exercise class, SAU, renal unit Attend Community clinic e.g. smoking cessation clinic, leg ulcer clinic Read and then observe in practice and then read some more! 6 Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate the safe care and theoretical understanding of a patient undergoing angiography and endovascular intervention Explore: Anatomy and physiology of the peripheral vascular system The indications for angiography/angioplasty Complications of endovascular intervention Indications for peripheral arterial thrombolysis EVAR repair of Aortic aneurysms Nursing care and management of the patient undergoing angiography Literature search Learning Opportunities: Attend diagnostic imaging to observe angiography Reflect on patient journey from time of pre-clerking to discharge Attend weekly Radiology meeting for MDT discussion of angiograms Attend teaching sessions on the unit with medical students Read and then observe in practice and then read some more! 7 Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate competency in wound assessment, care planning and dressing a complex wound using VAC ( Vacum Assisted Closure) Therapy Explore: Arterial causes of tissue damage Venous disorders and their management Impact of neuropathy on healing Pain management Traditional and contemporary dressing selection e.g. TNP (VAC), larvae therapy, Incidence and prevalence limb ulceration, decubitus ulcers Literature search Learning Opportunities: Attend teaching sessions for VAC therapy complete Nursing competency Attend inter-professional teaching and ward rounds Shadow Tissue Viability Nurse Read and then observe in practice and then read some more!
