Urology Day Case Specialist Nurse ENT Choice Colorectal Choice Mentors. All mentors will meet with their student every week of the allocation to discuss their progress to date. Every meeting with students must be documented. Any problems with students or mentors must be reported to educational link nurses ( Lynn Grant, Ralph Boutflower) or Senior Team Leader immediately. Problems must not be allowed to carry on until the final week before they are addressed. Week one of the allocation is orientation. A preliminary interview must be given in this week. Discuss opportunities of learning. Identify any specific objectives the student needs. Prepare action plan for allocation. Week four of the allocation is the mid-point interview. A progress report must be given this week by mentors. Week Eight a final progress report and mark must be given this week. Key. Areas in bold type indicate one week spent in that theatre. Areas in italics indicate one day spent in that theatre. Areas in normal type indicate half day as arranged by mentor within that learning zone. Notes. TSSU visits are now incorporated into theatre induction day, usually a Monday afternoon. Other learning zones may be accessed based on learner needs. Those above are those core learning zones identified by Educational Link Nurses to be essential to holistic theatre placement.

Orientation to unit; including, Reception Anaesthetic Rooms, Rooms, Theatres, Washer Disinfectant Rooms, Storage areas, Mentor signature. Identification of specialist trollies; including, Crash Trollies, Latex Allergy, Chest Drain, Emergency Intubation ( Adult + Paed) Introduction to Team members; including, Senior Team Leader, Team leaders, Teams, Mentor, Associate Mentor, Explanation of Structured Learning Experience; including, Identification of s specific learning needs, Access to Learning Zones, Specific Learning Zones beneficial to theatre experience, i.e; T.S.S.U, I.C.C.U, Acute Pain Team, P.A.A.C, Surgical Admissions Ward, Pre-set objectives given for these learning zones. Explanation of Dress Code; including, Jewellery policy, Theatre Hat Colour Code, Theatre Uniform Policy, Hospital Uniform Code, ( for learning zone visits) Personal Hygiene, ( finger nails, hair, hand washing) Off Duty; including, Shift Times, Request Book, Audit Days, Study Time Allowance, Departmental Philosophy; including Room Philosophy,

5 Preset Learning Objectives for Pre-Registration s Accessing Learning Zones from C Level Theatres, S.R.H. Learning Zone Date. Learners signature. Theatre Sterilising Services Unit, (T.S.S.U) Rationale to appreciate the service supplied to theatres Objectives; - to understand the concept of sterilisation, - to appreciate the knowledge and skills of the operatives, - to gain an understanding of the instruments / products supplied by the sterilising unit, - to identify the role of the unit as part of the theatre team, - To reflect on this visit with mentor. Pre- Assessment Clinic, (P.A.C) Rationale to appreciate the role of the pre-assessment nurse and the assessment process within the patient journey Objectives; - to discuss the concept of pre-assessment and link to the concept of holistic care, - to appreciate the skills and knowledge of the preassessment nurse, - identify the anatomy and physiology of the surgical procedure the patient is to experience and discuss and reflect with unit staff and mentor, - to understand how the medical history of the patient will have an impact on the procedure the patient is to experience, - to understand any moral / legal/ ethical implications the surgical procedure may have for the patient or specific client group, - to discuss relevant documentation necessary for these implications to be identified as part of that patients / client groups care, - to choose a patient / client, following their permission, through informed choice, to follow as a case study on their journey through theatre. 6 Surgical Admissions Ward, Rationale to assist in the admission of the selected patient / client and appreciate the role of ward personnel in the patients journey through theatre Objectives; - assist with the admission of the selected patient / client for the case study, - to discuss all aspects of nursing care with patient / client, nursing and medical staff, - practise within guidelines of professional code of conduct, - maintaining privacy, dignity and confidentiality of patients at all times, - to be involved in the management of the patients journey to and from theatre, - to reflect with ward staff and mentor on learning experience. - Acute Pain Management Team, Rationale to appreciate the role of the Acute pain management team Objectives; - to appreciate the role and workload of the Acute pain management team, - to discuss the concept and physiology of pain and acute pain management, - to identify a definition of what acute pain is - to understand the basic principles of the analgesic ladder, - to visit patients / clients affected by acute pain following surgery or referral to the Acute Pain Team, - to differentiate between acute and chronic pain, - to observe and discuss the tools available for pain management, - to discuss and observe the demonstration of P.C.A ( Patient Controlled Analgesia) and P.C.E.A ( Patient Controlled Epidural Analgesia) infusion pumps and recognise their differences, - to discuss and reflect on this learning zone with Acute Pain Team and mentor, - under supervision apply theory to practise in recovery area during placement allocation.
