2 Cragside Court Unit Profile Where are we? Cragside court is situated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and is part of the Older Persons Directorate. What do we do? Cragside Court is comprised of 2 units allowing male and female patients to be nursed in single sex environments, each unit is able to take up to 12 patients. Cragside Court is an assessment and challenging behaviour unit for people suffering from organic illnesses such as; Alzheimer s Disease, Vascular dementia, or Lewy Body type dementia. A Multi-disciplinary approach is taken when planning care to ensure effective care delivery and organised discharge to an appropriate level of care. Effective communication channels are in place to ensure that when planning care nurses can refer patients to colleagues within the multi-disciplinary team to assist and advise with all aspects of care delivery. You will be able to work with all these team members who are part of the learning zone to help you achieve a wider perspective about all elements of the multi-disciplinary approach to caring for people with an organic disorder. This will help achieve all clinical competencies set for the unit.

3 Shift system We operate a flexible shift system to obtain a balance between staff needs and requirements of the ward. We are aware and are working within the guidelines set out in the Improving Working Lives document. Morning shift 7:00am start 15:00 finish with 30min break Afternoon shift 12:15 start 20:15 finish with 30min break Long day 07:00 start 20:15 finish with two 25min breaks Night shift 19:45 start 07:28 finish with 60min break As a student nurse on the Saltwell unit you are required to work at least 3 shifts per week with your mentor. 4 Our role in education Student nurses are allocated placement from all levels of training to Cragside; from first year students who aim to learn basic nursing and interpersonal skills, up to third year students who are more involved in the case and unit management. You will be allocated an experienced mentor and co-mentor on your first day, who will support you through the placement and act as a catalyst for you to gain a full educational experience from the Saltwell unit. Mentors role Responsibility All the staff on the unit take their responsibility as educators to junior members of staff and students very seriously. We have a responsibility to develop an individualised plan of action for each student to achieve all learning outcomes in a comprehensive and enjoyable way. Commitment Each member of staff regardless of grade or role have a commitment to impart their individual and specialised knowledge and skills onto others. Time Time will be allocated in your educational action plan for you to discuss any aspects of care delivery or your educational needs. This will be carried away from the clinical area, in a setting free from distractions. Feedback This is a continuous process where feedback will be given in a constructive manner on the progress and development of your skills and knowledge s and how best to apply them to achieve your educational requirements.
