1 Employment Bulletin Midlands December 2016 On behalf of the Career Transition Partnership (CTP), welcome to the Midlands Employment Bulletin, which will provide you with the latest jobs and business news from across the region and highlights a selection of the latest regional vacancies on our job site, RightJob. Regional Overview The Midlands is situated at the heart of England is comprised of the counties of West Midlands, Sandwell, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire and Telford with the inclusion of cities and towns such as Birmingham, Stoke on Trent, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Solihull, Dudley and Walsall. Historically, employment in the West Midlands is dominated by manufacturing. Employers such as Jaguar Land Rover and JCB continue to lead within this sector. The eastern part of the Midlands consists of counties such as of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland. Each of these areas has its own varying set of employment factors which you need to take into account when job searching. Therefore, it is beneficial for you to keep up-to-date with local business news and sign up with local job search websites to get relevant, up-to-date information to aid you in your search for employment.

2 Regional Job Market News Expansions New businesses Market growth Upcoming opportunities Closures Risks Monarch Airlines announces 75 new jobs at Birmingham Airport Budget airline Monarch is set to create 75 new jobs for skilled technicians at its engineering base at Birmingham Airport. The new roles are available at Monarch Aircraft Engineering, the engineering arm of the airline. New recruits are being sought as part of the operation s continued growth as a result of plans to expand the team to around 250 staff. Read more Jaguar Land Rover workers set to land 750 bonus in exceptional pay deal Workers at Jaguar Land Rover s UK factories look set to land a generous 3.5% two-year pay deal - PLUS a 750 bonus. The deal with the Coventry car maker has been secured by the trade union Unite and shop stewards across the company have given their backing to it. Now 22,000 Unite members at Jaguar Land Rover workplaces in Coventry, Castle Bromwich, Halewood, Solihull and Wolverhampton will take part in a consultative ballot with a strong recommendation to accept. Read more HS2 could create 74,000 East Mids Jobs About 74,000 jobs could be created in the East Midlands if the planned HS2 route goes ahead, a new report has claimed. The government revealed last week that the eastern leg of the 56bn project will include a hub at Toton in Nottinghamshire, which will run to Sheffield and onto Leeds. The western led towards Manchester is also expected to boost north Derbyshire. An initial East Midlands HS2 Growth Strategy report said the route could create thousands of jobs and add 4bn to the region's economy by 2042, almost ten years after the line is due to be opened. 3 50 jobs in new Shrewsbury motor dealership plan Evans Halshaw, which has centres all over the country, has applied to Shropshire Council for permission to build a new sales centre, service, repair, valet and MOT centre and wash area on Vanguard Way on Battlefield Enterprise Park. The nearest sales centre to Shrewsbury for Evans Halshaw is currently at Worfield, near Bridgnorth. Under the scheme, which was submitted to the council this week, the company says it will create more than 50 jobs and will operate on a seven-day week basis in certain departments including sales, admin and servicing. Read more Technology centre launches with aim to create 140 jobs Fintech company Lombard Risk Management has ambitions to create 140 jobs at the technology centre it is launching in Birmingham today. The stock market-listed company will invest in the next generation of fintech products and is targeting the region's "rich pool of talented technologists". Initially it will employ 25 people, and plans to increase to 50 staff the following year and 140 in year three. The 7,100 sq ft centre is in Alpha Tower, next to the emerging Arena Central development in Birmingham city centre. Read more Palletforce to create Europe s largest palletised distribution hub Logistics firm Palletforce is set to double its footprint in Burton on Trent after Goodman revealed it is building a 260,000 sq ft distribution hub for the firm. The new facility will be built next to Palletforce's existing 379,000 sq ft distribution centre on Goodman's Centrum Business Park. The two buildings will form Palletforce's new national distribution centre and will become Europe's largest palletised distribution hub. Read more 80 jobs created as part of retailers deals JD Sports is creating 80 jobs as it prepares to open the doors on its new concept store at Merry Hill Shopping Centre. The retailer has refurbished and expanded its store and it will be the largest JD store in the West Midlands. The 17,000 sq ft store will re-open on December 9th. Elsewhere, a series of deals with retailers has resulted in Solihull's Parkgate shopping development being fully let. The recent deals included 10,000 sq ft to discount retailer B&M, and other units to Coffee One and Barnardo s. Read more

4 Cyber Retraining Academy A HM Government programme delivered in partnership with Sans Cyber Security Challenge UK is a series of national competitions, learning programmes, and networking initiatives designed to identify, inspire and enable more people to become cyber security professionals. Established to bolster the national pool of cyber skills, it offers a unique programme of activities to introduce sufficient numbers of appropriately skilled individuals to learning and career opportunities in the profession. Read more Derbyshire recycling firm supported with 10m package A Derbyshire business has secured a 10m funding package from the Business Growth Fund (BGF) and NatWest to support its construction of a state-of-the-art recycling plant in the region. Johnsons Aggregates & Recycling was founded by Steve Johnson in 1999 and has a turnover of 11m. It will use the funding package, comprising 5m from BGF and 5m from NatWest, to support growth following the creation of the new 11m facility that will recycle incinerator bottom ash (IBA). Johnson's currently recycles about 150,000 tonnes of IBA each year and the new facility will increase capacity to 450,000 tonnes. The plant will be fully operational by 2017 and is located on a seven-acre site in Stanton. Read more Jobs could be lost at Rolls-Royce if Brexit terms aren t favourable, says Notts MP Jobs could be lost at Rolls-Royce if the terms of a Brexit deal aren't favourable, according to a Nottinghamshire MP. Anna Soubry, Conservative MP for Broxtowe, said bosses at the engineering giant have told her about their concerns if Britain opts to leave the EU's customs union. But, in a statement, the company said it was "too early" to know about the impact of leaving the EU. The customs union is a form of trade agreement between two or more countries. It means they decide not to impose taxes on imports on each other's goods, and agree to impose common external tariffs on goods from nations outside their union. Read more

5 Continued UNWIS Work attachments for Medical Discharge Service leavers(uk) University in Support of Wounded, Injured and Sick Service Personnel (UNSWIS) was established in 2012, and has grown to a network of 46 Universities across the UK. Providing short unpaid work placements, taster visits, open days and education and training advice for wounded, injured and sick (WIS) personnel, Veterans and their families to assist them in their transition to civilian employment. Before UNSWIS, there were no formal partnerships with universities designed to support rehabilitation and resettlement of WIS personnel through work experience placements. Universities are a major contributor to the UK economy. What UNSWIS Do: UNSWIS arrange: Short Unpaid Work Placements Taster Visits Open Days Employment, Education & Training Advice UNSWIS can offer a number of sectors some of which include: HR Finance Administration Facilities Services Health, Safety and Environment Project Management Management Cleaning Security Teaching Catering and Hospitality Sports and Fitness Laboratory Technicians Although a work attachment cannot be guaranteed, if you are interested in being considered for a work attachment or taster visit and are going through medical discharge, please log into the CTP Assist Portal, and use reference WORK03142 or TAVI03143.

6 New jobs at Pendragon s car dealerships for Vauxhall, Jaguar Land Rover and Nissan Automotive retailer Pendragon PLC, the second largest company in Nottinghamshire, is recruiting for 11 new jobs across the county. The Vehicle Technician roles will be distributed throughout the group's Evans Halshaw and Stratstone car dealerships. They include Evans Halshaw Vauxhall Nottingham, Jaguar Land Rover Nottingham, Porsche Nottingham, Vauxhall Chilwell, Citroen Mansfield and Nissan Mansfield. It is part of a national recruitment drive for 300 new technicians and follows Pendragon Group's recent interim results, which highlighted positive customer behaviour post-brexit. Siemens, Mercedes Benz and Waitrose were all ranked in the 25 best places to work in the private sector in the UK. The list was compiled from millions of employee reviews on the world's biggest job site Indeed. The highest rated companies were found to offer career progression, flexible working, and perks. Chancellor commits 392m to Midlands LEPs Chancellor Philip Hammond said he is committed to closing the gap between London and rest of the country in his Autumn Statement today. The Government is to invest 5m in development funding for the Midlands Rail Hub and a programme of rail upgrades in and around central Birmingham that could provide up to 10 additional trains per hour. The Chancellor also said there will be 392m to LEPs in the Midlands, and that the government will continue to work towards a second devolution deal with the West Midlands. Read more
