1 Employment Bulletin North East/Yorkshire June 2016 On behalf of the Career Transition Partnership (CTP), welcome to the North East and Yorkshire Employment Bulletin, which will provide you with the latest jobs and business news from across the region and highlights a selection of the latest regional vacancies on our job site, RightJob. Regional Overview The North East/Yorkshire region is a huge geographical area covering a number of counties and large cities. Leeds is now the fastest growing city in the UK, and the largest Centre outside London for financial and business services with First Direct, Direct Line Group and Yorkshire Bank to name but a few. Construction in Leeds is powering on as new office space and residential developments hit a nine year high. York is no longer relying upon its railway and confectionery-manufacturing but is now developing in to an international destination and hub for science and technology. The North East is no longer dominated by collieries, and pit heaps have been reclaimed and naturalised in to landscapes to pave the way for companies such as Nissan, Arriva and Hitachi Rail not to forget the presence of business parks solely to house large call centres. The area as a whole has some of the biggest employers including Capita, Arriva, Network Rail, Northern Rail and Nissan. In 2015, employment grew faster in the North than the South and by the end of 2015, the employment rate in the North was at its highest on record, at 72.2% [HM Treasury Budget 2016] Each of these areas has its own varying set of employment factors which you need to take into account when job searching. Therefore, it is beneficial for you to keep up-to-date with local business news and sign up with local job search websites to get relevant, up-to-date information to aid you in your search for employment.

Hundreds of jobs could be created in the North East by offshore wind project Norwegian firm Statoil is looking for North East suppliers to join its massive offshore wind scheme in the North Sea One of the world s major energy companies is preparing to spend over 13bn on a massive offshore wind development off the North East coast with the potential to create hundreds of new jobs in the region. Keepmoat Keepmoat are a national construction firm specialising in the development of social housing. They have now started to add their vacancies on Right Job but this will take some time. Stiller launches earn while you learn scheme for HGV drivers TRANSPORT firm Stiller Warehousing and Distribution has launched an innovative scheme to get more people into driving heavy goods vehicles. The family-run company, based on Aycliffe Business Park, is trying to tempt young people to take up a career in driving HGVs with its own in-house earn while you learn training pathway programme. Stiller has previously ran successful programmes to attract exservicemen and overseas employees in a bid to combat a nationwide shortage of drivers. 4 New online mentoring from the Royal British Legion The Royal British Legion s online pilot mentoring programme offers an easy way for Service leavers to connect with mentors in the property and construction industry for career planning support, regardless of location. Over 3 million people in the UK are employed in property and construction, from estate agents to property managers, architects and planners to consultants and project managers, to engineers and the construction trades, and the industry offers a wide number of opportunities for Service leavers to use their skills. Service leavers wishing to sign up to the programme, select a mentor from those best matched to their profile and requirements. They are then encouraged to plan the information they want to gather and make regular contact with their mentor over an agreed period using , phone, Skype, social media or face-to-face communications to ask and answer questions and share career advice. Taemar reveals creation of 200 construction jobs as Lidl doubles Blyth presence Newcastle-based Taemar Ltd, a specialist in construction and facilities management, secured a multi-million pound building contract, which will create up to 200 construction-related jobs throughout the development process. 10 new jobs will be created at the Lidl branch itself on completion, which is expected to be before the end of the year. CITB Military Programme Construction The Military Programme is especially created for Service leavers who might be interested in finding out what career opportunities are available in construction and the built environment. Last year the Construction Youth Trust completed coordination of the high-profile BuildForce pathfinder project for ex-forces where we delivered work placements, training and events to a wide range of Service leavers. During the events the Armed Forces were able to get their site visits, gain insider knowledge from transitioned forces and insight into the industry.

5 Maritime Transport Drivers required Maritime offer work experience to service personnel, whilst they are still in the forces, as a way of both parties assessing suitability for a role within the company. During this time Maritime will train and mentor drivers and, more often than not offer them a role with the company. Maritime hold the professionalism, training and work ethic instilled by our armed forces in great regard and have found ex-servicemen and women a fantastic fit with the business.
