Are you responsible for the planning/oversight of new housing construction in your community, and/or the day to day management/maintenance of the community owned housing units? Would an understanding of building construction, maintenance and repair requirements help you to determine how long your assets can survive, assess their condition and long-term maintenance requirements? Do you require the skills and knowledge required to work with contractors to ensure new housing units are built in compliance with building codes and with building contracts? Would you like to learn how to ensure that the materials, time-lines, and costs of new construction meet the terms of the building contracts? Would you like to empower yourself to effectively manage rental issues, selection of tenants, rental arrears and repairs to units? Are you keen in learning about mold remediation, proposal writing for new housing, policy writing, and short and long term budgeting that would all combine into a master housing plan? Would you like to develop strong communication skills for working with your First Nation government, funders and the general membership? If you have answered Yes... to any of the above points then the Housing Manager Capacity and Community Development Training program is for You! Six Weeks of Training NAN is proud to announce that CMHC, and its partners, are offering Housing Managers a six week course to be completed over a six month period. Weeklong sessions will be held monthly and are scheduled to begin January 2014 and to finish June Each session will be held on a different First Nation in order for Housing Managers to see real examples of what other Communities are successfully implementing; join us for a chance to network with other Housing Managers, special guests and lecturers! Enrolment will be limited to a small group to ensure maximum support is provided to each participant. Course Content Following are the major themes that will be covered during the course. Housing Administration and Operations Housing Financial Management Housing Plans and Strategies Maintenance Scheduling Arrears Management Basics of Building a House Budgeting for Housing Managers Working with Chief & Council Funders Contracting Tendering Communications Client Counselling Interested in Participating? 6 Application Information for: Housing Manager Capacity and Community Development Training Selection Criteria Guide The selection of Housing Managers will be determined by a committee consisting of staff from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN), Partners and The Zarex Business Centre. Successful candidates will be selected based on a combination of factors including: Ability to demonstrate active involvement in the housing portfolio within their First Nation Completion of one page note describing their involvement in housing, highlighting accomplishments, challenges and future plans to address their housing needs Completion of skills and experience assessment questionnaire Ability and willingness to travel throughout the duration of the training program Basic computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel etc) Access to a laptop computer installed with Microsoft Office version 97 or later Access to internet and Section 95 project(s) in their community Support for training course by Chief and Council/BCR How to Apply? A A Upon acceptance to the training course, each Housing Manager is responsible for a $5,000 non-refundable course registration fee made payable to NAN Q Q Am I responsible for any additional costs? A A No. Upon acceptance to the training program, the following costs will be covered for each Housing Manager: Airfare from a major airport to the training location (coordinated by NAN) Hotel accommodations (coordinated by NAN) Meal Allowance (as per a predetermined rate) Return transportation from the hotel to the training site Training and all training materials, textbooks, manuals and CD s Q Q Can another member in the community take my place if I am no longer able to participate in the training course? A A No. The course will be tailored to individual needs based on the application process. QQ Who will be making all the travel arrangements/ logistics? A A Yes. Failure to attend a session will result in a withdrawal from the training course. Q Q Where will the training locations be held? A A Locations will be held in urban centres and on First Nations. Final location dates will be communicated upon confirmation into the program. Q Q What type of training format will be use? A A Training will be a combination of face-to-face in class sessions, lecturers, site tours and internet based learning.
