9 Head A new year brings new opportunities for all ages. Learning opportunities and engaging with others helps us to not only keep mentally and/or physically sharp, but provides ways to fill our time and gather knowledge to enhance our personal and professional lives. Ideas: -Take lessons or learn a new hobby. -Join a club or association. -Learn new skills or techniques. -Attend a conference, webinar, or seminar in an area of interest. Heart We hear a lot about setting goals right after the beginning of a new year in the news, or from our relatives and friends. What we don t hear much about is supporting others with their goals. This year take time to listen to others about the goals they have set for themselves for the new year. This is a great opportunity for you to assist them by possibly being an accountability partner, helping them with their goal, or providing them with resources that could help complete their goal. Achieving goals is a hard work; so a note of encouragement or a congratulations on reaching your goal note now and again would also be a great way to lend support. Hands If you like following the weather and keeping track of how much moisture you receive or spotting severe weather; then becoming a trained volunteer as a weather spotter or precipitation observer may be for you. The SKYWARN Storm Spotter Program (National Weather Service) is made up of trained volunteers who help to report local and often remote severe weather conditions. The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) is also made up of trained volunteers whose focus is to report precipitation totals and conditions in their local communities. These two programs help provide necessary information to weather stations in times of severe weather and help to ensure more accurate data reporting in more areas. The information is also vital to developing new research methods and products to improve accuracy and safety. weather.gov/skywarn/ weather.gov/bou/spot_training cocorahs.org/ Health Vegetables are an important part of our daily diet. They help to provide fiber, potassium, dietary fiber, folate (folic acid), vitamin A, and vitamin C. They also tend to be lower in calories and fat. The benefits of veggies include: reduced risk of heart disease and diabetes, help protect against some cancers, increase gastrointestinal health, lower blood pressure, and a reduced risk of kidney stones and loss of bone density. The suggested daily serving is around 1-3 cups per day (age dependent). Tips to Increase Intake: -Include veggies in a smoothie. -Add different colored vegetables to the meal. -Utilize fresh whenever possible. -Keep it simple by using a microwave or grill. -Keep quick snacks ready to go (i.e. carrots, celery, chopped up peppers). choosemyplate.gov/vegetables-nutrients-health Colorado State University, U.S. Department of Agriculture and Lincoln County cooperating. Extension programs are available to all without discrimination. Any mention of company names and/or products doesn't imply an endorsement of those entities or their services nor does it imply a criticism of their competitors and products.
