2 SAFETY CORNER: TRACTOR ROLLOVERS According to the National Tractor Safety Coalition, rollovers are the leading case of fatalities on farms each year. More than 100 deaths and permanent disability injuries occur because tractors are not equipped with rollover and seatbelt devices. Roll-over protection structures (ROPS) and a seat belt are indicated to be highly effective in preventing most deaths that occur because a rollover. Enclosed rollover structures can also help protect operators from the elements, head injuries, flying debris, and impalement. Seat Belt Equipped *7 out 10 farms go out of business within 5 years of an accident. Rollover Bar OSHA Employer Requirements: *A ROPS is required for all tractors with 20+ horsepower and was manufactured after 1976 and operated by a hired employee. *A seat belt is required for tractors that have a ROPS structure. *Employers are responsible for training employees on tractor safety and ensuring they are using their seat belt correctly. *Employees are entitled to safe working conditions. VS. *The average cost of a rollover fatality is $922,210. Tractor Safety Tips: *Always wear a seat belt. *Install a ROPS on all tractors. *Back up tractors on steep hills. *Stabilize the tractor for all jobs. *Utilize grapple forks. *Use traction devices on wheels and ensure proper inflation. *Inspect the tractor before every use. *Avoid driving on hillsides or next to edge of road. *Reduce speed for turns. *Do not carry passengers and watch for bystanders. *Do not start tractors from the ground. *Develop an emergency preparedness plan and first-aid kit. 3 EVENT ROUNDUP: Farm Safety Day for approximately 100 area fourth graders was held on September 20 at the Lincoln County fair grounds. Students learned safe ty procedures relating to: first aid, fire, electrical, firearms, rollover and seat belt, power take-off (PTO) and tractors, disability awareness, fourwheeler, grain, and animals. 4 ANNUAL 4-H ENROLLMENT & PROJECT DEADLINES Enrollment Deadlines: October 16-Enrollment Opens. December 1-Enrollment closes for returning members, foundation members, & volunteers. January 1-Enrollment closes for new members. Project Deadlines: March 1-Hunter s safety must be completed for all members enrolled in shooting sports projects or they will be dropped at this date. March 1-Project add/drop deadline. Information Required for Approval of Enrollment: -Verify your eligibility for enrollment in Lincoln County. Requirements include one of the following: reside/own property in the county, attend school in the county, or live within 10 miles of the county line. To enroll members must be between the ages of 8-18 as of December 31. -Complete the health form, including the physical and insurance section. *If you do not have health insurance, please put (None). Everyone must still sign this form. The health form is required to participate in all 4-H related activities. -Update your address, phone numbers, and preferred . * is the primary mode of communication from the office, leaders, and volunteers. The primary account listed will be the one receiving messages. Text messaging from cell phones is not used. Enrollment/Project Fees: Enrollment fee- $18/member (Enrollment fees are paid to the club directly.) Late enrollment fee-$20/ member payable directly to the Extension office. *This is in addition to the $18 regular fee. Shooting Sports members $25/per enrolled shooting sports discipline. (This is in addition to the enrollment fee and is payable to the Extension office directly.) *There are no fees for leaders or volunteers. -Select project units carefully and refer to the Colorado 4-H project page to verify you are enrolling in the correct project. Hunter s Safety is required for all members participating in shooting sports. -Remember to read each page carefully, select options, and electronically sign and date all sections. Y ou cannot return to a previous page. *Enrollments for members and volunteers cannot be approved until all required information has been completed. The fee is to be paid to the extension office directly. Project selection may be adjusted as shooting disciplines offered will be subject to certified instructor availability. There is a shooter responsibility form and a liability form that must be signed by all members and parents. *Additionally, members in pistol and/or western heritage are also required to fill out the hand-gun form. Deadlines: Forms-January 30 th Fees-January 30 th Hunter s Safety Certificate-March 1 All forms are available on the Lincoln county Extension website. Late fees of $10/per member will apply after the deadline. Members will not be allowed to participate at safety meetings or on the range until forms have been completed and fees have been paid. Members who have not completed all safety, fee, and form requirements by March 1 will be dropped from the project. 5

7 PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: VET SCIENCE National Veterinary Technician Week is October 8-14 and is a great way to highlight one of the many areas of veterinary sciences. Vet Science is one of many projects members can enroll in for 4-H. There are three units in the project including: Airedales to Zebras, All Systems Go, and On the Cutting Edge. Members have the opportunity to progress through the units to learn about animal anatomy, diseases, prevention and treatment methods, and explore careers relating to veterinary science. 10 Head Malware, viruses, and data leaks are common terms that we hear everyday on the news or from friends. In a technology based society, viruses or data breaches may not always be avoidable but there are many things you can do to protect your devices or data including: -Use a separate password for each account and change them frequently. -Avoid sharing personal information that you use for security questions. -Install security software on all electronic devices. -Avoid Wi-Fi and use passwords on your own network. -Don t open suspicious s or links. -Back up your data to a secure location. -Be watchful of purchase activity on all accounts. Hands Ag on the 4 Front is an agriculture blog and information page that was created by Kelsey Pope of Limon, CO. Her focus is like many agriculture producers who are bridging the gap between consumers and producers. Ag blogs such as these provide a great opportunity for consumers to learn about agriculture directly from the source. The real life stories and pictures help consumers understand the agricultural way of life and how their food is produced. Check out the blog or Facebook page at: agonthe4front.com/ Ag on the Forefront Heart The start of school brings many changes to schools. Kids move up in grades, change buildings completely, or are new to the school system or community. Being the new kid can be difficult for most students. This fall is a great time as school is back in session to help others feel welcome in their new classroom surroundings. Some of the following might be ways to help engage new students: -Introduce yourself and greet the new student. -Help them navigate the building to learn where everything is at and how the schedule works. -Invite them to sit with you at lunch or hang out during breaks. -Invite them to join school activities or clubs. -Let them know about community events. Health As students get back into the swing of school, it s a great time for parents to schedule an annual eye exam for their kids. The American Optometry Association estimates that one in four students has undetected eye problems. A student s vision is critical to successful learning in the classroom. Students with vision problems often cannot recognize differences in shapes, have difficulty reading, poor comprehension, and have a harder time with retention. Vision impairment can lead to physical symptoms and students may suffer socially as well. Signs of impaired vision include: squinting, headaches, poor focus, eye redness, head tilting, holding books close, learning difficulties, sitting close to screens, etc. Colorado State University, U.S. Department of Agriculture and Lincoln County cooperating.
