They identified the positive aspects of Cherokee and the chamber, as well as the problems that our community and businesses face. After much discussion, the board narrowed our focus to three main points: Shop Local A committee will be formed to identify the audiences we want to reach, develop an awareness campaign, identify opportunities to improve local businesses, and promote shopping local. Workforce and Business Support Communities across the state and the Midwest are all dealing with the issue of a quality, skilled workforce. Our goals are to retain our existing businesses, create new jobs by securing new businesses, recruit new retail businesses, and improve the workforce. Community Image and Attitude We are going to begin by providing opportunities for young professionals in our community to network and develop their leadership skills. We will also look at increasing the chamber s presence in our community, partner with the city to develop a cohesive community betterment program, and create an advertising campaign for Cherokee. As with any Strategic Plan, we have a lot of work ahead of us, and we won t be able to do it alone. We will be partnering with other organizations and businesses to tackle these issues and look forward to engaging our chamber membership in the process as well. RETAIL MEETING Tuesday, April 25 5:30 PM At Chamber Office This is our Quarterly Retail Meeting. All Retail Chamber Members are invited to join us as we discuss upcoming retail promotions and issues specific to retail business. Agenda items will include crazy days, and golf tournament fundraiser. Please let Julie know of any additional agenda items by Friday, April 21. Smoke Free Air Act In 2008 Iowa passed the Smoke Free Air Act (SFAA) to prevent unwanted public contact with cigarette smoke. At that time all businesses were required to post signs at their entrances and enforce no smoking in public places. To get around these laws the tobacco companies then came out with electronic cigarettes and other electronic nicotine delivery devises to continue to market their products. These products still contain nicotine and other harmful chemicals and toxins. The Smoke Free Air Act (SFAA) does not address this problem. Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) is now recommending businesses amend their policies to include Nicotine Free policies. As a business you are free to make this decision about your business and enforce it as you like. If you do adopt this policy, IDPH will furnish you with signs. There is a very sturdy 12 inch by 12 inch metal sign for outdoor use. There is also a window cling 6 inch by 4 inch for doors and windows. We will be happy to help any business, apartment complexes or other institutions update their policies. If you do so, please send a copy of your new policy (if you have a letterhead-that would be good to put it on). We will have it approved and help you with signs if you like. We can also put you on a Smoke/Nicotine free registry that is used by people to find businesses they prefer.z You can contact us at: Janice R.
