4 Letter from the Board Chair, Peter M. Grant Two words, giving and simplified, create an apt theme for Global Impact this year. Together, they capture the essence of what we are as an organization and who we serve. Global Impact exists because of the shared human need to give, to alleviate suffering, fight disease, educate, comfort and offer hope. Successful philanthropy demands skilled, visionary leadership to establish and execute an accessible, trusted process that will meet the needs of donors at all levels, partners on the frontline of service and people in need. This is what simplified giving means to Global Impact. Identifying needs, accessing resources and ensuring that those resources reach their final destination requires the collaboration of many organizations and hundreds of thousands of donors. It is a process we have honed year after year to a level of expertise few can match. The environment for giving today is full of change. In the past year, the world faced economic upheaval, geopolitical instability and conflict, major natural disasters and the specter of the first global pandemic in a generation. Despite these challenges, interest in and giving to international causes are on the rise. These realities are catalysts for defining opportunities to grow and thrive as we move forward. The number of employees able to give to international causes is growing. Vital management and marketing for the two Combined Federal Campaigns managed by Global Impact are increasing donations to charities. Donors enjoy the benefits of an array of robust online giving tools that make pledging convenient and easy. In addition to these powerful programs, Global Impact is preparing to launch innovative fundraising vehicles that will reach beyond workplace giving. We always are aware that the people most affected by economic crisis, political unrest and natural disasters are the people living on the edge of life. Ultimately, all of our efforts are for them as we strive to make giving accessible, far-reaching and sustainable. 2

5 Letter from the President and CEO, Renée S. Acosta Woven into the campaign statistics, financial reports and award announcements on the following pages, is a powerful story of leadership in international philanthropy. The numbers are impressive. In fiscal year 2009, Global Impact raised $131.9 million from 300,000 donors that benefited millions of people through the work of more than 18,000 charities. Those figures reflect success at the highest level. Raising even more money to help others than in the previous year Increasing organizational effectiveness and efficiency as evidenced by more dollars made available to help others Because of such strong performance, Global Impact ranks at 182 in the Philanthropy 400, a list of top national charities published by The Chronicle of Philanthropy. The net impact of the thousands of donations made by individuals who support our mission and vision is most clearly seen in the examples below. The boy in drought-stricken Nigeria who recovers from malnutrition and leads a productive life because of a feeding and nutrition program A teenaged girl in Afghanistan who for the first time has a school to attend, textbooks and supplies to use and finds an opportunity for education The family in Iraq who can visit a mobile health clinic for long overdue care A Sri Lankan mother who joins a micro-lending group and launches her small business after the war to gain the ability to feed, clothe and educate her children The man in Kosovo who learns a new job skill and finds employment These individual accomplishments are the impetus behind all of our high-level programming, management and growth initiatives. At every juncture, our commitment remains clear: Assuring help for the world s most vulnerable people. 3

International giving is on the rise Global economic markets increasingly define the world today. American corporations have worldwide operations and philanthropic interests. In addition, they employ a diverse and geographically scattered workforce. Individual connections and interests reach beyond geographic and political boundaries. All of these factors contribute to making international giving one of the fastest growing segments of philanthropy. International giving increased despite a decline in overall giving in More partners, more donors, more giving Global Impact experienced growth in every direction last year. International relief and development donations grew by two percent, eight new corporations became partners for workplace giving campaigns and almost half a million employees joined the potential donor base. Operating at the hub of this expanding network, Global Impact streamlines corporate campaigns, supports employee interests and funds relief and development work around the world. Adding Global Impact to Ashland s employee giving campaign responded to our employees interests and the global nature of our business. Just as we work without boundaries, Global Impact and its partners also serve without boundaries. 4 Deborah S. George Contributions Program Manager Ashland Inc.

External audits confirm the success of these practices, year after year. Charity Navigator Four-Star Rating, for the fifth consecutive year, for exceeding industry standards and outperforming most charities in international philanthropy. Seal Holder status from the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance, for the fourth consecutive year, for meeting all 20 standards for charity accountability including strict standards for governance and oversight. An administrative and fundraising expense ratio of 5.16 percent, a small fraction of the 35 percent deemed acceptable by the Better Business Bureau. Keeping costs low means more money reaches the people who need it most. With these excellent ratings, 16 Fortune 500 corporations selected Global Impact to distribute funds as part of their workplace giving campaigns. These partnerships delivered $29.1 million to 14,000 charities serving people around the world. Six expanded corporate programs: Accenture Ameriprise Ecolab Hewlett-Packard JPMorgan Chase Wells Fargo From war to hope in Lebanon Three years ago, Global Impact joined leaders from five United States corporations to form the Partnership for Lebanon. The goal: Expand education, workforce training, job creation and technology infrastructure in Lebanon. Recently, the Partnership teamed with the Lebanese Mine Action Center to clear key areas of landmines with the use of minesniffing dogs. These efforts make areas safe once again for agriculture and tourism. The Partnership also funded Tawassol 2, an Information Communication Technology youth summer camp that was the first of its kind in the country. Enhanced. 6 The power of a combined effort The Combined Federal Campaign is a workplace giving program created for the Federal workers. It is the largest charity effort of its kind in the world. Global Impact manages the campaign in the Washington, DC area and the campaign for men and women in the Department of Defense serving overseas. During this past year, both campaigns once again reached new records in giving. The Combined Federal Campaign of the National Capital Area raised $62.7 million in That is an unprecedented growth of 33 percent during the last six years under Global Impact s direction. Donors in the Combined Federal Campaign-Overseas increased their giving to $15.8 million in 2008, a 134 percent increase since Global Impact began managing the campaign in This statistic takes on special significance because donors include thousands of military personnel deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan who are already making enormous personal sacrifices through their service to our country. Donors in the two campaigns increased their giving by $2 million to help people in need, accounting for 72 percent of all new funds raised nationwide by over 240 CFCs last year. Multiplying financial advantages and marketing impact Global Impact provides reliable income to the charities participating in its corporate workplace giving programs, member network and managed campaigns. Together, the charities also benefit from marketing programs and access to donors that reach far beyond what could be accomplished individually. All of this extended impact comes with an administrative and fundraising expense ratio that is only a small fraction of the 35 percent limit set by the Better Business Bureau.

9 Partnering with Global Impact offers the most efficient, effective way for Doctors Without Borders to reach millions of potential donors where they work. Options for giving and the number of worthy causes seeking funding seem to grow every day. Global Impact s role is to make the giving experience as convenient, organized and accessible as possible for every donor. Giving more made easy Workplace campaigns offer donors options for giving that allow them to give wisely and to give more. The payroll deduction plan spreads donations out over 12 months. Even a small deduction per pay period adds up to a significant contribution that is likely more than many donors would be able to give in a lump sum. This year, Global Impact made online giving options more robust so that donors can contribute to charities 24/7, from home or the office. Every move Global Impact makes to use technology as an aid to the giving process results in growing donor satisfaction and participation in the campaigns. The Office of Personnel Management honored Global Impact again this year with Innovator Awards for its technology leadership in both Combined Federal Campaigns. Partnering with Global Impact allows us to not only provide great choices of leading charities but also provides us with a platform to educate our employees on solutions to issues that matter to them most. The results of the charities show employees that their contributions are truly making a difference around the world.
