2 News 18 January Success and thanks for 6th Brighstone Christmas Tree Festival Thank you so much for your support for the Brighstone Christmas Tree Festival. The event has been a resounding success and I am sure you will be delighted to know that, in just four days, has been raised for local and national charities. This major island event, (and the original Isle of Wight Christmas Tree Festival) is now in its 16th year and to date has raised nearly 70,000 for charity. This has been very much down to the tremendous support that we have received from the commercial sector and the media for which I am so grateful. Not forgetting, of course, the tremendous input from the exhibitors who really went the extra mile to present some fantastic displays this year, and, of course, one cannot forget the wonderful team of helpers who year in year out work tirelessly to ensure the success of the festival.. 3rd Wild West Solent Swim 18th August 2013 Following the tremendous success of the 2012 event when more than 30,000 was raised by 64 brave souls who took to the chilly waters of the Solent during the summer to raise money for the West Wight Sports Centre the date for 2013 has been announced! Entries are now open for the swim which will take place on August 18th Over 27,000 of the money raised in 2012 went directly to the sport centre in Freshwater, while 3,000 was shared amongst 16 other charities. It was the second time the event had been held, and saw swimmers aged 18 to 73 take to the water at Hurst Castle and finish at Colwell Bay. They were accompanied by over 40 kayakers and a flotilla of safety boats led by the Freshwater Inshore Lifeboat crew. It was a fabulous morning says Clare Griffin, centre manager, As a charity we rely heavily on fundraising activities and to raise 30,000 is an amazing achievement. We are so grateful to everyone who took part from the swimmers, kayakers, lifeboat crew as well as the team of volunteers on the shore who all made it happen. Entries for the 2013 Wild West Solent Swim are now open and anyone interested can find out all the details on the website Those who sign up will receive a 6 month bronze membership to the West Wight Sports Centre, so they can train for free at the pool before the event. To take part swimmers need to be able to swim 1000 metres in less than 90 minutes, agree to raise a minimum of 250 fro West Wight Sports Centre and be available for the pre-event safety and training sessions. Numbers will be limited to 70 swimmers. Big Venture Challenge UnLtd has launched the Big Venture Challenge and is looking for ambitious social entrepreneurs looking to raise investment and rapidly scale. Thirty winning entrepreneurs will win access to finance, business support and powerful connections to help them scale their ventures from a team comprising UnLtd, Clearly So and the Shaftesbury Partnership. The Big Venture Challenge is a 12 month programme that is designed to help social entrepreneurs raise external investment (debt or equity) of between 50,000 to 250,000. This means working with the entrepreneur to build a compelling growth story, finding investors, making strategic connections and supporting the entrepreneur during the journey. Match-funding of between 25,000 and 100,000 is available from Big Venture Challenge if a co-investor is prepared to invest an equal or greater amount during the 12 month award period. The organisations can take on any legal form acceptable under UK law, they can be for-profit or not-for-profit, but they must be relentless focussed on creating sustainable, scalable, disruptive social impact. Applications open TOMORROW on January 8th 2013 at and the deadline for applications is February 8th 2013 at 9am Licence changes for live music events Community groups, village halls and community centers will soon be free to put on events like dance displays and concerts without having to apply to the local council for a licence. safeguarding: Protection of Freedom Act brings in new portable CRB checks News from Blake Lapthorn The Home Office has recently announced that Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks, as they will now be known, will be portable from 1 March This means that volunteers will only have to get the checks updated rather than obtain a brand new check when they wish to apply for a new volunteering opportunity. 3 3 New Year s resolution Helping others! Could you be a volunteer driver? Specifically in Freshwater, Newport and Bembridge, Optio, the Island s voluntary car scheme, needs car owners to provide essential transportation for members who are unable to use public transport. Help members of your community to get to and from medical appointments, shopping or visiting family and friends. Frequently Asked Questions I m only free on certain days, can I still volunteer? Before volunteer drivers agree to start they usually want to know what sort of time they will need to give. That s an easy one: you tell us how much time you want to commit What about the fuel I m using? Obviously we are aware that petrol and diesel is expensive and there is also wear and tear on your car. You will be reimbursed at a rate of 45p per mile from your home for the whole journey until you return home. Am I too old to drive? There is no upper age limit; as long as you have a valid driving licence and are fit to drive we would welcome you as a volunteer driver. Will my bad back mean I can t help? Generally, passengers must be able to get in and out of a car unaided. If a member needs extra assistance they should be accompanied by a friend or carer. Volunteer drivers are not as a matter of policy allowed to lift or carry their passengers. All trips are booked through our office or area co-ordinators. When we have a trip request we contact drivers in the area to identify someone who can take on the trip. If you are able to take the trip will be given details of where the member is to be collected from and taken to, along with their appointment time. If it is a return journey it is usual to allow up to an hour and a half for the appointment before returning the member home. If the wait is more than an hour and a half then it will be classified as a double trip meaning you will be reimbursed for going home and coming back again. What next? If you are interested in becoming a driver please contact Optio helpdesk on
4 Funding 18 January A Grant Funding Prospectus - Increasing Physical Activity and Improving Mental Health The Island s Public Health Service has published a grant-making Prospectus that invites organisations and groups to bid for grant funding. The funding is to be used to deliver a number of important local health outcomes for adults. There are a number of physical activity outcomes for adults. These include increased involvement in physical activity and encouraging healthy outdoor activities There are also a number of mental-health related outcomes for adults. These are reducing social isolation, improving self-reported wellbeing, reducing suicide rates and reducing health inequalities. Applicants should have the knowledge skills and capacity needed to deliver their proposals. Proposals can involve communities, groups or individuals. The Public Health Services will also require regular monitoring and information about how well grant funded activities are working The total funding available is 60,000 to be allocated to a number of programmes and must be used within 12 months of an award being made. More information about this grant programme and how applications can be made can be found at: Closing date for applications is 20 February 2014 Future Ready Fund The aim of the Future Ready Fund is To protect and enhance essential and strategically critical services for single homeless people and support them in the transition to becoming sustainable This means we want to help organisations get ready for the future. What will we fund? What do you need you do to make sure your organisation is still here in 2 years time? We will fund proposals that; Lead to stronger organisations or test/pilot new approaches that will attract funding Prepare your organisation for change Build your skills and abilities to take advantage of new funding opportunities Build relationships or partnerships which strengthen organisations and help to attract funding and provide better services Make a real difference and will make sure organisations can continue to support clients in the best ways possible Click here to view the Future Ready: Key Policy Changes presentation. This presentation is essential reading for organisations thinking about the future. What do you need to know so you can prepare for the changes that are coming? website Santander Foundation The Santander Foundation now has two grants programmes to help disadvantaged people in the UK: Santander Community Plus and the Central Grants Programme. Santander Community Plus provides grants of up to 5,000. The scheme is open to small local UK charities or local projects of national charities with funding available to cover salaries, equipment or materials. The Central Grants Programme grants up to 10,000. Please note that you may apply for both grant programmes, but you will only be able to be awarded one of them. For more information, please visit the Santander Foundation website. Awards for All - Criteria change For the last six months, the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) has been running a pilot in the West Midlands region giving groups the opportunity to apply for repeat and on-going activities under Awards for All, which was due to close. Due to the success of this pilot BIG has decided to roll out this pilot across the whole of England until 31 March Previously Awards for All did not fund on-going, regular or repeat activities, as the programme has focused on new project ideas. However, in these challenging times BIG are increasingly aware of the pressures smaller groups face with rising costs and cuts to funding, and want to respond to this by looking at alternative ways of funding projects that support those most in need. The relaxation of this criteria will apply to all projects where the applicant has an income of less than (or equal to) 30,000 according to their latest accounts. For more information, please visit the Awards for All website.
