4 Voluntary and Community Sector Healthwatch Kent Community Champions Do you support vulnerable people who may have health issues? Then Healthwatch Kent would be interested in hearing from you. Healthwatch Kent listens to people about their experiences of the health and social care services and takes that voice to the commissioners of health and social care services in Kent. These views and experiences play an important role in decisions that are taken about new and existing health and social care services. Our free information and signposting service can help navigate Kent s complicated health and social care system and ensure that the available services are easily accessed. Healthwatch Kent is currently looking to engage Community Champions which is a key volunteer role. Champions are usually people who already work within a voluntary organisation or community group. By becoming a Healthwatch Community Champion, they act as the link point between their organisation and Healthwatch Kent. Key benefits of being a Community Champion include: Having a direct route to raise the voice of your members or clients to Healthwatch Kent and in turn, to people who provide and commission health & social care services Working together with us to help improve services and ensure the public are involved in any planned changes to services Being the first to hear of any commissioning opportunities via a dedicated monthly newsletter Keeping up to date with the work of Healthwatch Kent to ensure your organisation and members are informed and involved Community Champions don t need to undergo a formal interview, they only need to complete a simple registration form. Please click on this link to complete the registration form. Furthermore, everyone who completes a registration form will be automatically entered into a prize draw for a 50 gift voucher for Amazon. For more information please contact Robbie Goatham, Information Co-ordinator robbie@healthwatchkent.co.uk or call us on

7 Public Sector Swale Borough Council Corporate Equalities Scheme Swale Borough Council is asking for people s views on how it promotes equality and diversity across the borough. A consultation has been launched on the new draft Corporate Equality Scheme, and the council wants local people to share their thoughts. The council s draft Corporate Equality Scheme sets out what the council will do to further promote equality and diversity among people of different ages, ethnicities, disabilities, gender, sexual orientation, faiths or beliefs. Cllr Ted Wilcox, cabinet member for performance at the council, said: As a council, we need to ensure that all communities feel safe, have equal access to our services, and that our services are designed to avoid any discrimination on people with a protected characteristic such as disability, race, religion or sexuality. Swale is becoming an increasingly diverse place, and we need to tailor our services to meet those changing needs whilst providing value for money for local residents. We also need to take a leading role in making Swale a place where everyone has equal life chances, and we want to foster good relations between people by tackling prejudice and promoting understanding. The draft scheme describes how the council will fulfil its moral, social and legal obligations to eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation, advance equality of opportunity, and foster good relations. It sets out four objectives, which aim to make Swale a fairer place. Supporting integration and cohesion in our local communities by fostering good relations between different groups. Supporting vulnerable residents by supporting Swale s more vulnerable residents, particularly those with a disability. 3. Ensuring easy, clear and convenient access to our services by improving the council s customer care and working with communities to make services more responsive to the needs of Swale s residents. Promoting equality as a local employer by ensuring that those policies and practices that affect council staff are fair and promote equality of outcome. To read the draft scheme, and give your views, visit Equalitiesconsultation/.

10 Funding Starbucks Youth Action Grant Deadline 7th March 2016 Starbucks Youth Action aims to inspire and support 16 to 24 year olds who want to make a positive impact in their community. Young people in England, Scotland and Wales aged between 16 and 24 years who are not in full time education or employment can apply. The funding is to be used by the young people to develop and run projects in their local community. To support the project, young people will be given access to a specially designed App. Once downloaded, the app will help them keep track of their milestones and achievements while supporting them with the planning and delivery of their social action project. All workers supporting young people will receive a copy of an employability toolkit to run through employment ready sessions and the QCF Unit Leadership pack, which will provide activities and recording documents for the young person to complete to gain their QCF unit in Leadership. In addition, young people will have access to job and apprenticeship vacancies within the Starbucks Coffee Chain. Applicants will be notified of the outcome within two weeks of the deadline for the month in which they submitted their application. 12 Funding Let Teachers SHINE 2016 Let Teachers SHINE is a national competition with grants for teachers who have a brilliant idea for teaching English, Maths or Science to disadvantaged young people in England. The charity SHINE created this annual competition in 2012 to address the fact that 60% of children from the poorest households do not achieve five good GCSEs at school, leaving them without the basics they need to access further education or secure a good job. Each year 10 winners receive grants of 15,000, enabling them to expand their education project which benefits disadvantaged students up to the age of 18 years. These students can either be pupils at the applicant's school or others living nearby. The students must be eligible for the pupil premium, have special educational needs, speak English as an additional language, or meet another indicator of disadvantage. The funding can be used for staff time dedicated to the project or backfilled costs, equipment required or third party resources. Successful ideas might involve superb after-school programmes or innovative use of technology. They could work with whole classes, small groups or individuals. Recent pilots have included peer tutoring, story-based orienteering using tablets, and using sport for kinaesthetic learning. Winning applications will share some common characteristics: Clear objectives with measurable meaningful impact. A sensible, transparent budget why the money is needed. The potential for expansion projects that can scale up. Innovation genuinely new ideas and fresh approaches. Target disadvantage it must benefit disadvantaged students educational achievement in literacy, numeracy and/or science. SHINE will not fund more than 50% capital/equipment costs.
