1 BUSINESS, MARKETING, AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DIVISION 2016 Executive Officer Spring Meeting Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education Stillwater, OK Business Meeting Minutes March 29, 2016 Call to Order President Cindy Adams called the meeting to order at 9:40 a.m. Members Present Cindy Adams, Pam Hulsey, Daniel Devers, Angela Brownfield, Karen Montgomery, LaVon Holtzinger, Kathy Lowry, Jayne Hudson, Beverly McAnally, Rachel Phillips, Meredith Walker, Brenda McClain, Emily Goff, Penny Lovell, Hital Damani, Janet Harris, Afton Jameson, Kathy Lowry, Christie Hyatt, Dayna Stephens, Sheila McMurry, Betty Lowrance, Sherri Gleaves, Teresa Pinkston, Brandy Redus, Marie Page, Christy Flanigan, Leslie Cooksey, and Dawn Owen. BITE Division staff, Carrie DeMuth, Jackie Arnold, Tonja Bell, and Dustin Devers, were present to give updates in their respective areas of responsibility. Visitors included Reba Riedener, Suzanne Wright, and Brianna Godfrey. Approval of Minutes Secretary, Sherri Gleaves, read highlights of the minutes. Motion made by Daniel Devers and seconded by Penny Lovell to approve as written. Motion carried. Treasurer s Report Leslie Cooksey gave the Treasurer s report. A motion to approve was made by Dayna Stephens with a second from Beverly McAnally. Motion carried. Reporter Update Daniel Devers has created a new site for the BMITE organization and his private company has graciously donated the expense of maintaining the new site, bmite.org. The old site, bite.org, will remain live and the two sites will point to each other. Regional Updates North Central Angela Brownfield reported that they were working with online training and preparing for NLC. Northeast Brenda McClain reported a Swap Shop was held in November. The meeting included working with their new engraver received through the lottery grant, flying their drone, discussion of STEM software, and sharing time. Eight were in attendance. Northwest Emily Goff stated her region was preparing for NLC. South Central Liz Dinkins is on maternity leave. No report.
2 Southeast Penny Lovell reported they met December 3 rd. Christie Hyatt presented on Google Forms and Scott Mosby presented on Google Apps. Eleven people were in attendance. Southwest Hital Damani reported their division was preparing for NLC. Bite Division Updates Carrie DeMuth reported: High Schools will have a 5.8% cut in program incentive money. That will be reflected in their payment in May. The $2,000 salary supplement remains. There may still be additional cuts. 85% of the money to the agency goes straight out to high school and CT centers. Of that, 85% of that goes to Tech Centers, 15% to comprehensive schools. Lottery grants are being read. Thanks for applying for those. New Teacher Academy July Evaluation for comprehensive schools is changing. A new form will be distributed with the new dates. New portal in CTU for sharing of equipment/books/software with others. A new foundation course is being developed for 7 th grade students. It will be an overview of many areas within BITE. Please send in information about what is going on in your schools. Many schools are trying to determine whether to convert their BITE programs to PLTW (STEM program). BITE already has courses and incentive money in place so BITE division is considering new ways for teacher training. PLTW is for high school students only not adults. New terminology teaching Program Areas. This is replacing current career majors. Current career majors are aligned into one of these new areas. Standard is 900 hours (600 minimum for Pell Grant) for every program area. The number of hours can be adjusted +/-450 hours if a school is a Pell school. Must still align to industry certification for outcomes. Our course structure will remain in place. OHLAP courses have to remain at 120 hours. Jackie Arnold reported: Summer workshops check website under professional development. o June 16 CTU training, Tonya Bell o June 7, 8, 9 Certiport Training to 3 different campuses FT, Tulsa Tech, and perhaps one other; they will not be at Summer Conference this year. At the conclusion, you will have the opportunity to test. o BPA Training June 21 at ODCTE; Online testing, Torch Awards, BPA Cares, Competitive Events o June 23 Scott Mosby, Google Training o July 14 MBA Regional Workshop; Tulsa-Tech, Owasso Campus o September & January 2017 Continuing Teacher Academy Summer Conference August 1 & 2, Oklahoma City, Cox Convention Center o Dues - $25; Registration will be $40 due to luncheon costs of $36.79.
3 o Registration includes luncheon, snacks, and gift for presenters. o First day Luncheon together with our division at 11:00 am. Monday breakfast ($25) award winners will be recognized; during Open General Session only the winner of each category will be presented. Afternoon General Session 2:40 4:30 p.m. o Second day Sessions will be one hour each (3 morning, 2 afternoon); 15 minute passing period. Breakfast 8-9; Lunch 12:30 1:30. No afternoon snack due to late lunch. National Leadership Conference o Boston, MA; Copley Place Marriott; 50 th Anniversary; Thursday-Monday format o Sky Bridge on 2 nd floor, Hines Convention Center then through to Sheraton Hotel (conference headquarters). Not meeting in main convention hall. o Special Event; Fenway Park Guinness World Book Record must purchase conference t-shirt and wristband Food is $15; no other eating options around Fenway o Purchase Charlie Card. MBTA online. $19 for one week; on/off subway and bus. Will drop you off at convention center. o Google-GoBoston Card. $87/regular $ day includes Boston Whale Watch-Thursday morning; Salem Museum; Plymouth Plantation and Museum; Freedom trail walk; Aquarium, John F. Kennedy museum; Fenway
4 Walk Tour, Boston Bike Rental ($40 all day); Paul Revere House; USS Constitution Cruise; many, many more o Star Market open 24 hours; deli with hot bar; great food ($6-8 with 2 sides) o Friday, April 1 deadline for registration and pre-submission. Committee Reports Awards Janet Harris and Afton James o We have had a large number of applicants this year, approximately 20. It was noted that you could apply yourself without being nominated. Scoring is currently being completed and then winners will be announced. o Recommendation to make all awards, across the board, read two consecutive years of membership in BMITE/OKACTE/ACTE. Discussion was held among members. Suggested they write up proposal for bylaw change and bring to vote of membership in August. Audit Angela Brownfield o Audit was conducted with 100% reconciliation. o The committee will be working on a combined Marketing and BITE budget for the future. CTAC Afton Jameson reported. A few highlights were a State Proclamation for FCCLA; CTSO Day at Capitol on February 2; Amber England, Stand for the Children, spoke on the one-cent sales tax; OKACTE now has attorneys; Teresa Pinkston reported on National Policy meeting; Skye McNiel is sending out weekly OKACTE reports about legislation. Diversity Brenda McClain o No information to share. Legislative, Christie Hyatt and PAC, Dayna Stephens o PAC is down. Only 24% of ACTE members are contributing. Silent auction ideas were presented. Perhaps hold a challenge at the luncheon to join with a drawing for a smaller basket. o Working to create a video showing purpose of PAC. o April 14 is BPA/DECA Day at the Capitol. Membership Rachel Phillips o Gifts usually cost $5 each; total of $2,000 o Proposing a time at the State Capitol Rotunda for a mix/mingle time with light snacks, door prize drawings, and entertainment in lieu of gift. o Additional planning in progress. Nominating Pam Hulsey o Currently have one person for each position. Will continue to accept nominations until May 2 nd. Nomination form can be found on the home page of our website. Policy Daniel Devers o Currently looking at handbook and making sure it was in agreement with the bylaws. o Some small changes may be proposed but will need to be voted on by membership at Summer Conference.
5 o It was mentioned that we have several handbooks one for awards, one for BITE, etc. It is suggested that they be streamlined so that there is not as much updating necessary. There seems to be confusion as to who is responsible for handbook updates. President updated the BITE Handbook this fall. o Deadline for bylaw changes is by mid-june. Mutual Benefit Plan reported through by Angela Durant-Tyson who could not be present. o Met Friday, December 11. Now called Mutual Benevolence. Looking at open enrollment at August Conference o Discussed combining with COSAA for cost-saving opportunities. Scholarship Emily Goff o One applicant, Cody Gervasi, excellent selection. o Dean Denton will be invited to present the scholarship. o Plan to put the application form out earlier next year. New Business New BMITE logo o Create guidelines and time frames; Dustin to help with these o Teachers vote on final choice o Begin in Fall 2016 PAC o PAC budget for auction basket has been $150. o Additional basket will be built to promote BMITE PAC membership. o Donations would be accepted to fill or create baskets. The Scholarship Committee nominates Cody Gervasi to receive the Dean Denton/BMITE scholarship. Penny Lovell made the motion to accept; 2 nd by Pam Hulsey; motion carried. Sherri Gleaves made a motion, 2 nd by Sheila McMurray, for BMITE to have a budget ready to present to the membership at August conference. Adjournment Motion made by Sherri Gleaves and seconded by Penny Lovell to adjourn. Adjourned at 3:23 p.m.
