1 NYSFAAA Region III September 25, 2015 SUNY Oswego Fallbrook Lodge Kathy Flaherty called the meeting to order at 10:10am. This is was the first region meeting for the academic year. Introductions were done by all who attended (total of 18). Kathy welcomed us to the Fallbrook Lodge in Oswego. She provided a brief history of SUNY Oswego and the Fallbrook Lodge. Kathy thanked the outgoing officers and welcomed the new officers for Region III. The new leadership roles become effective in October. A vote was taken with all in favor, no oppositions and no abstentions. Comments from the President (Kerrie Cooper) -Perkins: Agreement on one year extension. Waiting on Perkins to be passed and then be part of reauthorization. Kerrie thanked all who sent s and letters to help support Perkins. Treasurer s Report (Danielle Griggs) -No activity since last meeting in May. -Revenue share = $ Current balance = $ Executive Council Update (Darrin Rooker) -Met June at Buffalo Conference Center -Remote meeting held on August 19 th -President Report: -Working on new programs (ex-aim) and reviewed the new awards that were given out by HESC vs what was awarded. -EASFAA council meeting with 50 th anniversary next year. Next conference is in Atlantic City and the following year the conference will be in Burlington, Vermont.

2 -1 st VP Report: -Membership for 14/15 = 1318 total members. Goal was Revenue goal was hit. -Region III membership for 14/15 = 190 members. -2 nd VP Report: -State wide training in process. -Met their goal with at least one webinar a month. -Approximately 100 people signing up for the webinars-viewing live or going back in the NYSFAAA website to view the webinar. -Looking for more committee members for training committee. -Intermediate workshop being held October 16 th and 17 th in Albany, NY. -State wide training with all regions being held November 20 th. -Secretary Report: -College Goal NY held 37 events-thank you to those that helped. -College Access network will be taking over for CGNY as of October 1 st. -Gear Up will have a meeting October 19 th -20 th near Albany and NYSFAAA will be represented. -Treasurer Report: -Approved 15/16 operating budget. -A lot of time has been spent working on the budget. -Funds have gotten tighter but minimal impact where cuts were made. -Training with webinars still has costs. -Had to increase membership fee to $75.00 with serious discussion on this. -Tax exempt will continue (approved). -Laura Worley update: All going well with conference. -Scott Atkinson update: 2016 conference will be held at the Turning Stone Casino. New/Old Business-Important Dates (Kathy Flaherty) -Buffalo Conference: Be aware of deadlines coming up to reserve rooms/conference, etc. -Kerrie Cooper addressed finding a balance between webinars and in person training. It is important to actually attend conferences. -Intermediate Workshop: No word as to how many people are attending. The workshop is usually held every other year. -October 13 th : Webinar -November 5 th : Webinar-Gainful Employment -November 12 th : Webinar-Improving Debt -November 20 th : Webinar-Top 20 Frequently Asked Questions for Verification/Aid for Modules. This webinar will be held at Le Moyne College and include a Region III meeting.

3 Old/New Business-Committees (Kathy Flaherty) -Always looking for participation for various committees. If interested, please reach out to the current contact person associated with the committee. Need to use it as it cannot be carried forward. -HESC provided scholarships to students. -Can have up to 50 sites but need more volunteers to have this happen-help to organize the sites. -Working with HESC to promote events -Each site has to submit budgets and applications for each site. -Please reach out to LaSonya if you are interested in volunteering! Support Staff Workshop (Kevin Shults) -Workshop provided to the front line staff in the office which allows colleges to talk with one another with a one day workshop. -Discussion was made last year to have it in October but there was concern as there were also other conferences going on. The question is when to have the next one. -Discussion with group to now have the workshop in June and possibly at the Craftsman Inn. -Discussion with group on what topics to have (not beginner topics) and in the past Region III helped support budget for workshop.

4 -Kevin will contact the Craftsman Inn to find out prices and dates available (while contacting the Craftsman Inn, Kevin will also get a price list for possibility of having our Region III December holiday meeting there)-will report at next meeting on venues and pricing. Region III Support at Conference (Kathy Flaherty) *A motion was made by Kathy Flaherty, seconded by Darrin Rooker to contribute $ to NYSFAAA scholarship fund in memory of. A vote was taken with all in favor, no oppositions and no abstentions. *A motion was made by Kathy Flaherty, seconded by Amy Connors to use $ from Region III s budget to create a gift basket for the NYSFAAA conference. A vote was taken will all in favor, no oppositions and no abstentions. -Danielle and Jessica offered to create the basket. HESC update (Lisa Simpson) -Processing going smoothly. -Over 520,000 TAP applications processed for 15/16 academic year. -Notice of residency issues to students is about a week behind. -If IVP could not make a match, HESC has been sending weekly s to students (these students will not show up on a roster)-students need to make sure SS# and name match tax return, check on tax filing status, and if they actually filed or not-all needs to match in order to go through IVE -Separate electronic rosters are available if desired (TAP, STEM, NY-AIMS). Need to check with your college to make sure you can actually import/export three separate files. -Contact payments@hesc.ny.gov to opt in for separate rosters. -AIM Scholarships: completed applications applications provided all the required documents to be awarded -Started May 22 nd and ended July 30 th -Get On Your Feet Loan Forgiveness Program: -Not live yet as they are still working with loan providers. -HESC currently has application for the program. Students can register with HESC and they will provide additional information. -They will pay up to 24 months and pay directly to the servicer on the borrower s behalf. -Hope to have it all live within the next couple of weeks. -View the HESC website for additional information. -Masters-in Education Teacher Incentive Scholarship: -Will go live for the 16/17 academic year. -Awarded to 500 top students for 2 years of graduate studies. -SUNY/CUNY tuition rate and must attend a SUNY/CUNY college. -Details are still being worked out. -Question asked: Will notification be sent to colleges where there is an IVP issue?

5 -Answer: No. HESC is trying to work on it on their own without having to involve the colleges. Contact Lisa Simpson if you would like a copy of a list of students at your college. -Question: Prior Prior Year-How does that work with TAP awards? -Answer: HESC cannot use PPY for their applications. They can only use prior year. It would have to be a legislative change-write your letters!! Let s Talk! -Region II awards are being kept a secret until the conference! -PPY: Discussed by some that will work out great but worried with the TAP application and estimating awards. PPY allows for early processing of applications and award letters. And issue may occur that the boards have to set prices earlier in order to being the process sooner. PPY may lead to higher PJs. Are systems ready and set up to being the processing earlier? -Gainful Employment: Schools have received letters. Schools need troubleshooting reports in order to make corrections. Where did info come from-triggered by COD reporting to NSLDS.
