1 Teacher Information Welcome Letter with Expo Updates Contacts Expo Calendar Student Entry Fees
2 Dear Colleagues, We are excited that you have chosen to have your students participate in the 17th annual NWABR Student Bio Expo. This Teacher Resource Binder should help you in planning for student participation. It is suggested that you describe the event to your students relatively early in the year. We have enclosed entry criteria for each of the major categories, as well as the criteria that will be used for judging. All individual category criteria can be found in Category Requirement Section. Expo website: (the files will be available to download in Box, a filesharing program). MENTOR REQUEST REGISTRATION INFORMATION Students requesting mentors will register November 25th. Teachers have found it helpful for students requesting mentors to narrow down their areas of interest before signing up. Many teachers require students to turn in to the following items to the teacher before registering: 1) Fill the information on the student sign up spreadsheet ( ed). 2) A preliminary bibliography with 3 annotated sources. 3) A print out of the category requirements from a category of interest. All students, both those requesting mentors and those who have not, will register for the Expo between April 3rd and midnight Sunday April 23 rd, All participating students should fill out the permission forms and return them to you. Please send the class set of permission forms to NWABR after you have collected them or bring them to the Expo event. Students do not need to be enrolled in a class of a participating teacher to register for a mentor. The Expo is open to all. Students may participate more than one year, but their project must be significantly different from prior years. Teachers are usually limited to bringing 35 student teams to the Expo. However, this year if fewer than 375 students register, larger schools will be allowed to bring additional students. MENTORS3 Students will have the choice between an e-mentor ( contact only), or a 1-on-1 mentor (mostly contact with a few face-to-face meetings). Some 1-on-1 mentors will be able to provide job shadow opportunities, a tour, or a lab experience (limited). Students can also find their own mentor, or opt out of the mentor program. If both the student and mentor are willing, the relationship can expand. NWABR will strive to find a mentor for every student who requests one. We also encourage students to find contacts in the community themselves. We urge you to stress to your students the importance of professional behavior and prompt follow-through when interacting with mentors. We recruit many of the same mentors year after year, and those relationships are very important to us. Sample s that students can use to communicate are provided in Section 5. Students need to communicate with their mentors within one week of receiving the initial contact from the mentor, or else risk losing the mentor to another student in need. Also, please have students contact Janis Wignall at bioexpo@nwabr.org if they are having trouble getting in touch with their mentors. PROJECT CRITERIA and GROUP PROJECTS Review the project criteria can be found in these documents. The judges will use the criteria to evaluate projects. Please review these carefully. Only students entering in the Music, Drama and Dance, Indigenous Science, SeaVuria, SMART teams, Lab Research or Multimedia categories can work in groups. All other entries must be individual projects. For team projects, each student must turn in an individually written, separate Science Background Paper and Artist s
3 Statement. Students must also justify why a team was needed and document the roles fulfilled by each team member. IMPORTANT DATES NWABR is providing some milestone dates. Expo Important Dates: October - November Student and Mentor registrations December-April Mentoring April 3 rd April 23rd Student project registration (closes on midnight April 2 3rd ) April 24th-May 18th Expo Projects reviewed by Expo Judges May 19th Expo at Shoreline Community College How has the Expo been funded in past years? For many years the Expo was funded through NIH grants, Sponsorships and Grants. This has resulted in a GREAT program model. This year the Expo is funded through Sponsorships, Entry Fees and Grants. Our goal this year is to move the Expo to a long term sustainable model and thus NWABR board voted to move to a fee for service model. For 2017 STUDENT ENTRY FEES $30 Expo Program Fee, waived for students of parents from NWABR Member Institutions Free for students needing financial assistancce We believe that the Expo represents a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their understanding of biotechnology and biomedicine in unique ways that reflect their interests and abilities. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to science education. Sincerely, Janis Wignall Expo Manager bioexpo@nwabr.org NWABR, 2633 Eastlake Ave East Suite 302, Seattle WA 98102
