4 La Tanisha C. Wright, B.S. BIG TOBACCO RETAIL CONTRACTS & PRACTICES IN AFRICAN AMERICAN & LOW SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS COMMUNITIES La Tanisha C. Wright, internationally known and nationally acclaimed public speaker and tobacco control advocate, earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Spelman College in three years. In 2001, she pursued career opportunities with Brown & Williamson (B&W) Tobacco, now RJ Reynolds (RJR). While working as a trade marketing and controlling manager, she obtained exceptional knowledge of the tobacco industry s strategy of demographic targeting to minorities, tobacco industry marketing and retail contracts, the overall tobacco retail landscape/culture, the strategic placement of tobacco products, and the general characteristics of tobacco trade channels. In May 2004, Ms. Wright clandestinely briefed Attorneys General on the KOOL MIXX campaign, which resulted in a settlement where RJR agreed to pay $1.46 million to four non-profit organizations. Ms. Wright is the Director of Follow the Signs (FTS). She founded and self-funded the company in 2004, shortly after resigning from B&W and realizing the critical need for more aggressive tobacco control efforts aimed at protecting the public at the tobacco retail level. The mission of FTS is to reduce tobacco-related disease, disability, and death by increasing awareness of tobacco marketing aimed at increasing tobacco sales, tobacco use, menthol use, youth access to tobacco, and nicotine addiction. From , Ms. Wright served as the tobacco subject matter expert and public health advisor for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) initiative, as well as a senior consultant with the CDC s Office of Smoking & Health (OSH). She is currently an Advisory Committee Member for the University of Southern California Tobacco Center for Regulatory Sciences. (USC TCORS). In 2013, Ms. Wright testified against Big Tobacco in support of proposed tobacco bans designed to protect New York City youth, retailers, and citizens from predatory tobacco marketing. On April 17, 2013, she was prominently featured in a film exposing Big Tobacco s global marketing to youth titled Big Tobacco, Young Targets. The film was directed by an award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker, and produced by Canal+ (France's equivalent of HBO). The documentary premiered in 40 countries across Africa, Asia, Australia, and Europe. Ms. Wright has been described as one of the foremost experts on predatory tobacco industry retail marketing tactics. She has trained tens-of thousands of tobacco control advocates representing federal, state, and local agencies with diverse tobacco control objectives that serve various communities. Her charitable donations to tobacco prevention programs have exceeded the amount of money earned while working for the tobacco industry a goal personally aimed for since resigning from Brown & Williamson. Over the next few years, she plans to publish a memoir detailing her experiences with the tobacco industry. J. ERNEST AGUILAR, M.DIV., PH.D. GETTING THE BIGGER PICTURE: A MODEL FOR OVERCOMING BIAS AND IMPROVING ENGAGEMENT J. Ernest Aguilar, M.Div., Ph.D. brings a unique background that combines his work in hospital chaplaincy and as an educator in university and community health settings. Dr. Aguilar has worked with CAI for over three years, having served as trainer, researcher and project director across a diverse range of projects within the organization. Dr. Aguilar brings his extensive experience in curriculum development, having developed many courses for students of the health professions, and delivered workshops and presentations on a variety of topics associated with social justice in health care. His doctoral research focused on alternative approaches to addressing health disparities and he has presented his findings at regional and national conferences. Dr. Aguilar s areas of expertise include critical multiculturalism, social stigma, advocacy, health-care ethics, and religious issues in health care. Dr. Aguilar earned a Ph.D. in Medical Humanities from The University of Texas Medical Branch (Galveston, Texas), a Master of Divinity from The Washington Theological Union (Washington, D.C), and a B.S. in Applied Learning and Development from The University of Texas (Austin, Texas).
