Bo 5064, Charlottesville, VA Date Submitted April 14, 2018 Connection to TJMC Congregation (Please Complete ONE Section Below): Application By An Established Group Within The Congregation TJMC-UU Group/Committee Name: OR Application By An Organization/Group Outside TJMC Organization/Group Name: African American Teaching Fellows (Charlottesville & Albemarle County) Brief Mission Statement: To recruit, support, develop, and retain a cadre of highly qualified African American teachers to work in the Charlottesville and Albemarle public schools. We currently have 15 Fellows teaching locally in Albemarle Public Schools, Charlottesville City Public Schools and a local private school. Four Fellows will graduate from their teacher licensure program in May 2018 and two have already been offered jobs in the Albemarle Public system. AATF is bringing on 5 new Fellows this June at our 7 th Annual Teacher Leader Summer Institute. We are initiating and hosting a Black Teacher Leader Summit open to African American teachers throughout Virginia. The founder of the Black Teacher Project of New York City will facilitate this 2-day workshop. For the 4 th year in a row an AATF Fellow has been recognized as a Golden Apple recipient, Nicole Carter, English teacher at Charlottesville High School. Please note: 70% of AATF income is spent for direct and indirect support of our Fellows. We spend $10,000 per year to recruit and support each active Fellow in our program. In 2017 the money raised through the TJMC Social Action Collection plus the donations from individual TJMC members provided over $9,000 for direct support for our Fellows. As in

2 past years, if this application is accepted, all the money donated by TJMC members individually, as well as all the money raised through a Social Action Collection will be spent for the direct support of Fellows. Bob Gross I was a member of the local community group that founded AATF in 2004, served as initial volunteer staff and volunteered over the years to assist with fund-raising efforts as well as being a strong donor. The program has shown year after year that with: (1) careful recruitment by knowledgeable local citizens; (2) resourceful, creative, and effective activities for participants; and (3) modest financial support it is possible to enrich the public school eperience of ALL of our students and improve the retention of dedicated young teachers. Our local program is successful and can serve as a model for other communities facing similar challenges. 4 Supporter: Must be a Member of TJMC-UU and an active supporter of your organization. Greta Dershimer I was an AATF Board Member for 6 years; served 4 years on the Fund Development/Community Outreach Committee and 2 years on the Program Development Committee; edited the AATF Newsletter for 4 years; and videotaped classroom lessons of AATF Fellows and interviews of Board members to produce an imovie about the organization that was used to recruit new Fellows. As a young teacher I worked in a school district that was the first one on Long Island to hire black and Hispanic teachers. I saw what a difference a diverse teaching staff could make for minority students and observed a positive shift in the cultural climate of the schools. I believe that AATF is helping to create that kind of change for our local schools. A County administrator has told me that it is becoming easier to hire and retain African American teachers from outside the area. The presence of our Fellows who are now teaching shows other potential African American teachers that they will not be isolated in our schools. Don Landis AATF serves an important role in our community by recruiting, mentoring, and developing young role models for ALL of our students. I have served on the AATF Board in the past and have observed the powerful interactions that our AATF teachers have with ALL of our students. I personally have worked with many of the Fellows, have observed their interactions with students, and have witnessed the outstanding efforts put forth each day by their dedication to our students. Sponsors Must Ensure Social Action Collection Envelopes Are Placed Into the Orders of Service & Assist The Ushers As Needed On The Date Of The Collection. Recipients Of A Collection Must Submit A Use Of Funds Report Within 11 Months Of The Collection Date Detailing How The Donated Funds Were Used.
