2 Monthly Activity Report For County Historian: April 19-May17, 2017 April 19, Gave presentation to the Wellsville Methodist Church Women s group April 20, Met with Tina Zalar at the landfill records buildings working on space allocations. April 22, (Saturday) Afternoon talk at the Cuba Library April 24, late afternoon conducted tour of County Buildings for new Legislator Stockin. April 25, attended meeting of County Department Heads April 26, PM Talk for Andover Historical Society May 3, Noon talk for Rushford Senior Citizens. May 4-11-Ohio vacation trip May 16, worked with Tina Zalar from DSS shredding records in our two buildings.

3 Allegany County SWCD May 2017 Resource Management Committee Report We finished a grain bin storage project in the Town of Caneadea at the beginning of May. This project represents $74, invested in a local farm. We completed a streambank stabilization project in the Town of Friendship. This project was completed with Alfred State College Heavy Equipment class and used as a training project for them. The Rushford Boat launch project is partially complete. Concrete pouring for the wash pad is complete. The Ag District 4 report has been submitted to Ag and Markets for their review. We received a letter from FEMA awarding us funding for a stabilization project in the Town of Belfast. This will be on the Genesee River. The total project cost is $625,222 with $468,917 coming from FEMA. We are currently working on securing the matching funds. We have been working for 5 years to get this project funded.

6 Public Safety Committee Resource Management Committee Youth Bureau and STOP-DWI Monthly Report April 2017 Youth On 4/3 met with Government for Youth interns; discussed responsibilities of both positions STOP - On 4/7 attended Crime Victim Ceremony; presented with Certificate of Appreciation Youth On 4/12 participated in BYD (Bureau of Youth Development) conference call On 4/13 participated in Senior Forum with educational information and giveaways STOP On 4/17 participated in GTSC (Governor s Traffic Safety Committee) grant training for Bicycle Safety Grant; completed 2018 grant application STOP On 4/18 met with STOP-DWI Administrator who picked up Traveling Exhibit Youth On 4/19 held Annual Youth Board Dinner and Youth Recognition Awards; 56 attended dinner with recognition of two graduating seniors, one retiring board member and 5 youth for Youth Recognition Awards; graduating senior gave presentation on CRCS Outdoors; held quarterly Youth Board meeting STOP On 4/24 attended WNY Regional STOP-DWI Meeting in Batavia STOP On 4/25 attended Traffic Safety Board meeting Continued accepting registrations for Regional STOP-DWI Training in July Linda Edwards Youth Bureau Director/STOP-DWI Coordinator 4/30/17

7 Cornell Cooperative Extension of Allegany County May H and Youth Development Programs - Upcoming Events: Archery Clinic with Mighty Makers 17 + kids Robin Kellogg (Kellogg Alpaca Farms) is working with 4-H 7 Allegany County Schools bringing agricultural programs into the schools. The program is How Many Farmers Does it Take to Make a Pizza? Regional Hippology competition in East Aurora. Will be 6 advancing to State Hippology Assisting Youth Bureau in scheduling Bicycle Safety programs in AC Schools Clothing Review May 19 (28 already registered!) Fair prep is in high gear! 8 Livestock, Ag Economic Development and Natural Resources: Baskets or Pallets: Scaling up to Meet Your Market Channel FIELD DAYS: Genesee Valley Produce Auction Review of wholesaling marketing and addressing the importance of quality, uniformity, tracking products, packaging and overview labeling requirements. Grizzly s Custom Cutting Participants will be introduced to quality grade and yield of beef carcasses and view a demonstration on meat cutting. We will also discuss what producers can do to control uniformity, consistency and scheduling to meet market demand along with regulations for sale of meat for various market channels. High Tunnel Production This will be an introductory class on growing vegetables in high tunnels. We will cover basics from choosing structure, potting materials and plant varieties through to marketing produce. Toad Song Mushrooms Learning how shiitake mushrooms grow, from selection of logs to sustainable harvesting. Farm Animal Safety and Management Training. With classroom and hands-on workshops covering safe handling and restraint, safe moving & transporting, basic animal care skills producers will enhance knowledge and skill to work safely with livestock. Tractor and Machinery Safety Certification Training The 4-H and FFA sponsored Tractor and Machinery Safety Certification Training is NYS required for all youth between 14 and 16 years of age if they are or will be working on a farm and operating tractors and power equipment. The training is open to both youth and adults. Working with the Genesee Valley Produce Auction developing a Good Handling Practices (GHP) plan in preparation for Certification Audit. Also working with 3 farmers on development of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) plans with goal on having 3 rd party audits in place for 2017; additional 7 farms with goal of certification for 2018 growing season. 5 new beginning farmer contacts in April that continue to work on both business management and production. 3 rural landowners looking at opportunities to lease property to farmers. Ag & Food System Issue Committee met on April 24 th discussion focused on how to go about determining needs and future direction of CCE. Varysburg on Saturday, July 8 th from 9am-noon. Alfred State College, June 5-7 June 21, 22 and 23, 2017 Certification will expand market opportunities for the action in Centerville. Next meeting will be May 22 from 6-8 PM at the office.

9 First Pasture Walk of the season will be at John Stoltzfus Farm. 3 speakers and a demonstration of cover crops plots for extending grazing Promoting participation in the 2017 Ag Census Planning for regional Military Veteran Family Farm Day. Program will be is open to any active or retired Veteran curious about, aspiring to be or currently farming along with their family. Wednesday, May 10 th and planning for grazing conference on June 30 th at Alfred State College. Distribution of information about the census, how data is collected and used, importance of being counted (on-going). Sunday, June 25 th Burley Berries in Warsaw.
