3 Tuesday September 27 8:00 a.m. Field trip to examine restored emergent and ephemeral wetlands on Terry Back s farm in Bath County 11:00 p.m. Examination of historic drainage actions at Dwayne Pergrem s farm in Bath County. Students will view wetland and stream restoration opportunities and participate in an exercise involving practical wetland design. 5 Thursday September 29 Hardhats Needed 7:00 a.m. Breakfast 7:45 a.m. Construction of an ephemeral wetland on a ridge-top within a timber sale unit by using a dozer. Finding a suitable location Practical design and layout Contracting heavy equipment and hiring an operator Obtaining permits and approvals Removing and hiding vegetation Removing and storing topsoil Building a groundwater dam Shaping and packing the dam Building the spillway Replacing topsoil Landscaping techniques for reducing maintenance Improving habitat for reptiles and amphibians (placing logs and branches) Controlling erosion (seeding and mulching) Establishing native plants Improving habitat (bat roosting boxes, bird nest boxes, dragonfly perches) Richard Hunter 12:30 p.m. Construction of a small wetland using a dozer in a closed road. Richard Hunter 7:30 p.m. Final Exam: Design and Build Your Own Wetland This was truly a fantastic class! I will recommend it to my sponsors to try and send others next year. 5

6 Friday September 30 Hardhats Needed 8:00 a.m. Repair of a failed wetland by using an aquatic safe liner & geo-textile pads Safety discussion Examine wetland repair site and review design Discuss project with heavy equipment operator Remove topsoil using the excavator Create depression using the excavator Place and anchor the geo-textile layers and aquatic-safe liner Use excavator to cover geo-textile layers and the liner with topsoil Place large and small woody debris Sow and plant native species Mulch with leaves and straw Carol Neeper & class, Jennifer Johnson, Mark Davis, Brian Radcliffe 1:00 p.m. Course Evaluation and Presentation of Certificates Brian Radcliffe 1:30 p.m. Adjourn This could be the best class I have taken during my 22 years at the EPA. 6
