ANNUAL REVIEW 2011 Giving a better quality of life for serving and former Naval personnel

HRH The Princess Royal, Patron The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity has taken very positive steps in the past year to establish itself successfully as the focus for Naval charity. The ability to mix shared expertise at the centre with local ownership means that the best of all worlds can be achieved. I am also pleased to note the position that the RNRMC is assuming in the wider charity sector. This focus is so important and lies at the heart of the reason why the charity was established. It is also very encouraging to see that the income of the charity is increasing, particularly from those who are serving today and through the widening network of contacts that the charity is making, and all in a difficult environment. I remain convinced that encouraging those who are serving today to support the RNRMC will reap many benefits in the years to come. Ultimately the success of the charity will be judged on its ability to raise more through its fundraising and distribute more through its grants processes to those in need. As Patron I am delighted to see that both these aims were achieved in 2011 and I have no hesitation in commending the work of the RNRMC to you and encouraging you to give the charity your full support. Admiral Sir Jonathon Band, President On assuming the role of President from Admiral Sir Jock Slater, I was particularly struck by the distance that the RNRMC has travelled in a relatively short period of time. We are now clearly established as the focus for Naval charity, we have developed an effective message and, perhaps most importantly, we are being adopted by increasing numbers of our beneficiaries as the charity they choose to support. The arrival of the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund as a subsidiary and the close relationship developed with the WRNS Benevolent Trust are very encouraging signs that the federated way of working is accepted as adding value to large independent charities. I look forward to seeing this process continue as we work with key partners in the sector. The strategic changes taking place in the sector are also very important, with the RNRMC providing a focus and establishing its presence alongside the sister charities supporting the Armed Forces. This coherence and partnership is essential if we are to maximise the opportunities available to the sector. Above all, our clear brand, strong image and the absolute focus on improving the quality of life means that more of our beneficiaries are receiving more money than before, through the charities we support, especially in benevolence and the grants that we make to the Naval Service. The voyage has just begun and I am proud to be on board. Rear Admiral John Chadwick CB, Chairman In 2011 we made further good progress from greater marketing and fundraising efforts and, most importantly, from meeting increased demand from our beneficiaries. This was despite a challenging workload from integrating the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund (RMCTF). A direct comparison of our financial position at the year-end is particularly difficult to achieve because of the integration of the RMCTF. Suffice it to say that in 2011 we received more income from our investments and from donations, and we gave out more to our beneficiaries, including significantly more to benevolence. In July 2011 our first President, Admiral Sir Jock Slater handed over to Admiral Sir Jonathon Band. Sir Jock s contribution to the fledgling charity was invaluable and he was an inspiration to all the Trustees and our staff as we met the challenge of creating a single charity for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. Much water has passed under the bridge since the Navy Board s decision in 2006 to create a single focus for Naval charity and since the incorporation of the RNRMC in January As I prepare to hand over to my successor as Chairman, Vice Admiral Sir Richard Ibbotson, I am pleased to be able to report that we have made good progress towards our strategic objectives of giving more to our beneficiaries, giving more to benevolence and achieving a single focus for Naval charity. Numerous Naval charities are now under the umbrella of the RNRMC and in the military charity sector we are acknowledged to be the single focus Naval charity. We have demonstrated our ability to attract new funds to Naval charity and we have grown Payroll Giving to 33% of serving personnel, compared with the historic average of around 12%. This has enabled us to increase the RNRMC Group s charitable grants to 6.2m in Also, I am particularly pleased to welcome the decision by the Trustees of the Royal Naval Benevolent Trust (RNBT) to work with us to implement a formal relationship between the RNRMC and the RNBT. None of this could be achieved without our hardworking Trustees, our small number of committed staff, and, most importantly, our generous and enthusiastic supporters across the Naval family, in business and elsewhere. I am most grateful for their support and for the increasing enthusiasm for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY 2011 was a year of change for the RNRMC as we consolidated our accounts with the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund (RMCTF) and we are able to report growth in all Group income lines. Our income-focused investment policy delivered income ahead of budget; donations to the parent charity saw a marked rise as our new brand and message spread, and there was a successful start to the RMCTF 6m fundraising campaign. Our continued focus on the serving community led to a surge in Payroll Giving and this increase has enabled us to reduce our reliance on investment income to 26% of our income. By the year-end, the RNRMC reported an unrestricted surplus of 82k which will be used to support the growth of the charity. The RMCTF reported an unrestricted surplus of 725k and in line with the aims of the RMCTF campaign, 500k will be invested for future income generation. Where the money came from In financial terms, four significant developments enabled us to increase our income; first, more supporters raised more money for us than ever before; second, Greenwich Hospital now delivers all its output to the Naval charity sector through the RNRMC; third, Help for Heroes channel significant funds via the RNRMC grants team to assist the Recovery Pathway; and finally, the fundraising campaign to support the RMCTF had a good year. Group donations rose from 440k to 2,854k and the RNRMC Payroll Giving scheme was up from 338k to 464k. Despite the volatile economic backdrop, investment income rose again and delivered ahead of forecasts to 2,403k compared with 2,148k for The RNRMC received 2,442k of funds from Greenwich Hospital and 500k from Help for Heroes. What we achieve with the money The RNRMC Group of charities exist to improve the quality of life of our beneficiaries. In 2011, the Group gave grants of 6,195k, up from 3,663k in This increase has meant that once again we have been able to increase the number of beneficiaries we have been able to reach through supporting more charities with Benevolence grants. We have also significantly increased the number of Amenity grants that we have made and, through our Group companies, have given much needed assistance to those on the Recovery Pathway from wounds or injuries. Other costs The total resources expended for the Group was 7,955k. In line with our strategic intent, the RNRMC began to develop its fundraising capability in 2011 and established a more robust operating model. This resulted in increased costs but they were kept in line with income growth such that our key cost income ratios remained at around the same levels as previous years. The Trustees of the RNRMC and subsidiary charities take careful note of the expenditure and authorise expenditure only against a controlled plan and budget. INCOME Investment: 2,403k (26%) Donations etc: 2,854k (31%) Grants received: 3,137k (33%) Payroll Giving Schemes: 936k (10%) GRANTS Benevolence: 3,372k (55%) Amenities: 2,006k (32%) Sports: 423k (7%) Dependants: 318k (5%) Prizes: 76k (1%) Note: New funds transferred in for RMCTF of 7,694k have been excluded from the income figures to enable comparison to previous year. Disclaimer The summarised financial information shows the income raised from our activities, and the amounts spent on our charitable activities. The information is taken from the full audited financial statements, Trustees Annual Report and Auditor s Report. Copies can be obtained from the Charity.

A YEAR OF GROWTH Robert Robson, Chief Executive 2011 was another year of exciting growth and development for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity on an increasing number of fronts. Over the course of just twelve months we added a major new member to the RNRMC Group, we developed important new partnerships, we increased the amount of supporters we have and we gave out more to help our beneficiaries than ever before. The arrival of the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund into the RNRMC was a very significant moment for us. The work to come together has been an excellent example of cooperation as the RNRMC teams have been mobilised to support the RMCTF trustees. We operate a model where our finance and grants teams are shared, thus providing expertise where it is needed at the lowest cost. This has meant that the trustees of the RMCTF have been able to make clear and focused decisions on where to spend their funds. Expanding the support to fundraising has also meant that the RNRMC has been able to help the fundraising campaign launched by the Corps and which had a very successful first year. To be able to raise sufficient money to meet the grants requested and to be able to invest the surplus for the support that will be needed in the decades to come is an amazing achievement in the current climate. We also welcome our involvement with the business community who form the C Group supporting the Royal Marines, based in the West Country, and look forward to strengthening our ties. The strategic relationship with the WRNS Benevolent Trust has proved to be a success and enables us to develop our mutual understanding. We value this link highly. During the year we also joined up with Help for Heroes, who asked us to act as the grant maker for their funds to the Naval Service and reach those in need with the minimum of fuss. It has been a pleasure to see this partnership develop, and in conjunction with the RMCTF, Royal Marines Association and C Group, meet the needs of a vital part of our family. Whilst the vast majority of our 1.2 million beneficiaries require help later in life, those on the Recovery Pathway need our help today. Through working with others, we can deliver that help fast and efficiently. It was a fantastic year on the fundraising front as more and more people have chosen to support us. Payroll Giving income has once again increased and at the time of writing over 10,000 serving personnel have signed up. This has resulted in our ability to give more money where it is needed. Our next target is to achieve 20,000 serving personnel donating through Payroll Giving. This support has come from a huge range of sources far too numerous to mention. People walk, run, ski, canoe, trek, swim, bicycle, bake cakes, hold dinners, balls and lunches (I could go on), to raise money for us and we are running ourselves to catch up with this surge in support. Without it we cannot do what we are here to do and all we say is, please keep it coming. We held our first Supporters Event during the year when our Patron joined us to thank a host of fundraisers I am not sure which tale impressed Her Royal Highness the most but skydiving for the first time certainly got a comment! What our supporters do for the RNRMC really matters and is hugely appreciated. We are also grateful for the help we get from partners in the wider business world. In 2011 we began to focus north of the border in support of both our serving community and veterans, and we held our first Trustees meeting at the home of the submarine service in Faslane. We were delighted to be chosen as a strategic partner by the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and to receive a very generous donation as a reflection of the work we do in Scotland. Underpinning all that we do is giving a better quality of life for serving and former Naval personnel through giving grants to ships, units and establishments, to sports, to prizes and awards and for benevolence and, most importantly, in the event of a death in service. Increased income meant that we could increase our grants programme and our giving now stretches through the entire spectrum from children, through to those of working age to the elderly. Geographically we stretched from Cornwall to Scotland and from Kent to Anglesey and through the large grants we make to the Naval charity sector, to most parts in between. Support to those in harm s way or training for global operations was a constant theme as our grants programme to ships, submarines and RM units intensified. Any review of the year must also include a comment on our relationships with our partner charities. I welcome the everincreasing levels of cooperation with our Naval charity colleagues, our liaison with the broader maritime charities such as Trinity House and Seafarers UK and the crucial links with our sister charities ABF The Soldiers Charity and the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund. The sector must join up and work together through tough times if we are to survive and prosper, and the RNRMC are committed to a partnership approach. It s been another extraordinary year of change and growth, during which a small central team at the RNRMC supported an ever increasing network of charities in the Group. This model works well and keeps us busy we are immensely grateful for all the support we are getting in our early years and, with our eye on the future, we are working hard to build the foundations of a national Naval charity. We look forward to working with you in the years ahead. Thank you for all that you do.

RAISING MORE and GIVING MORE GRANTS: PRIZES AND AWARDS Excellence sits at the heart of the Naval Service and the RNRMC provides over 75k of prizes and awards each year to establishments and individuals. We also operate the Herbert Lott Awards for Efficiency and have seen a jump in the number of these awards given as their profile has been raised by the charity and they are recognised as a key source of morale in the Fleet. No praise is high enough for our supporters, staff and volunteers, and the work they do. RAISING MORE IN 2012 As we look back at 2011, 2012 is well under way and the level of activity is higher than ever. Field Gun Pulls, Beat the Block 2, marathons, cake sales and the success of our first StandEASY day all join with more Payroll Giving sign ups to make it a cracking start. Watch out for more reports on our website in the months ahead and thank you! GRANTS: BENEVOLENCE We support a family of 1.2m people. The largest element of our grants goes to Naval and military charities that help those in later stages of life or with specific issues. The RNBT and RN&RM Children s fund receive our largest grants but we have increased the number of charities we help from four in 2008 to 15 in 2011, and more again in The WRNS BT, Combat Stress, Blind Veterans UK, Erskine Homes, Sailor s Children s Society and the Not Forgotten Association are just some of those we have helped. We look forward to expanding the list in the years ahead. GRANTS: AMENITIES It s amazing how the word spreads when money is available! More was asked of us in 2011 and, through increased income, we were able to respond. This is really the main area where we reach the core serving audience with our grants and in every measure we increased what we do. We expanded our minor grants (up to 5k) programme dramatically and increased our major grants as well. From 45 Commando RM in Scotland to HMS Seahawk in Cornwall, our reach was wide and across every branch of the service. Family days, pre and post deployment activities, climbing walls, yachts, mess improvements and a major sponsorship of the Field Gun Tournament marked the year.

EVENTS Once again our centrepiece was the South Coast Proms, staged by the Massed Bands of Her Majesty s Royal Marines. The weather was kind, 7,000 people packed HMS Excellent and it was an extraordinary evening. Our brand entered the national stage as we joined the ABF - The Soldiers Charity and The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund as the sponsored charities at the British Military Tournament where we were honoured by the presence of Her Majesty The Queen. Further afield it was a great experience to join the historic Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo for the first time. GRANTS: DEPENDANTS The ability to deliver a 12,000 charitable payment to dependants at a time of great need, and to do so normally within 48 hours is a key part of our work. Close liaison with Visiting Officers means we can make the payment in the most effective way, and of course we never know when the call will come as illness and accident strike suddenly alongside the losses suffered on operations. In 2011 we paid this grant 21 times. Around the country hundreds of people held events to show their support.

GRANTS: SPORTS The Olympic Games are all around us in 2012 and our contribution to the Elite Athletes Coaching programme was our contribution to both Olympian and Paralympian competitors. Once again every RN and RM sporting association from Archery to Windsurfing received a grant just another way that we help the Service stay fit and motivated. Working with the Sports Lottery and HMS Temeraire staff, we ensure that funds available are used most effectively saw us focus on our property in Wales, the Naval Mountain Cottage in Snowdonia and its potential as a centre for Adventurous Training. MAJOR RELATIONSHIPS 2011 saw an expansion in our relationships with business and with trusts. Whether this support comes through direct sponsorship or through employee participation, we work carefully with our partners to identify where grants made to us can be best applied. To take just some of the examples of the generosity are those such as MBDA, BAE Systems, PF Charitable Trust, Pusser s Rum, the Gosling Foundation, Hintze Charitable Foundation and the Trustees of the Edinburgh Tattoo which enabled us to increase our grants programme. In our first year together the employees of the Aircraft Carrier Alliance completed a Beat the Block bike ride and raised a staggering 36,000. To them and all of our corporate friends we extend our deepest thanks. A special mention must go to Greenwich Hospital, whose historic benevolence to our mutual beneficiaries is now distributed by the RNRMC.

COMMUNITY FUNDRAISING The year saw a huge increase in support as our name and work became more widely known. We would like to thank everyone who helped raise money for us through sponsored challenges and events such as the Bastion to Blighty medics team who raised over 4,000, HMS Sultan who raised 6,500 in just one of their events and, 815 Squadron s annual beard growing competition which raised over 350. It was fitting to see our Patron recognising many of our supporters with certificates and being able to thank them for all they do for us personally. We added a new dimension to our Payroll Giving campaign, launching a competition amongst the Fleet. Well done to HMS Dragon, HMS Excellent, HMS Vigilant (P), HMS Vanguard (P&S), HMS Quorn, HMS Lancaster, HMS Duncan and 42 Commando Royal Marines each winning 1,000 for their welfare fund. The result was a 36% increase in payroll-giving to 464k which means 33% of the Service are signed up. We were particularly pleased to see the support we received from the training establishments and Payroll Giving remains our focus in With a new campaign being launched in September this year we aim higher still. Remember, the more we raise the more we can give to our beneficiaries. RECOVERY PATHWAY The wounded and injured from current conflicts and those serving personnel with long-term recovery needs are managed through Hasler Company Royal Marines. The RNRMC provides a centre of excellence for grant making to this important group of beneficiaries. Through an innovative arrangement with H4H, the RMA and our subsidiary charities, the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund and the C Group we can share the grant making load and provide help as efficiently as is possible. GIVING MORE IN 2012 As we go to press, grants are once more on the increase as we respond to demands from both the benevolent charities and in-service requests. We assess the need through a central team, of just two people, and are glad to report that the vast majority of requests are met. As our supporter base grows alongside our grants programme the benefits of a virtual circle of a single charity to channel fundraising and grants is being brought to life.
