3 WORDS OF WELCOME On behalf of my Co-chair, Jacques Van Dam, as well as Paul Fockens, Ken Yasuda, Claudio Navarrete and Zhendong Jin of the Program Committee, we are delighted and excited to make the first announcement for EUS We have chosen San Francisco to be the host city for the 16th International Symposium on Endoscopic Ultrasonography. There is some symbolism in choosing San Francisco, as it is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world but is also known for its diverse culture and radical futuristic thinking. We believe that EUS 2008 ROBERT HAWES Chairman will reflect this vision of San Francisco. EUS is clearly undergoing a transition, and the main focus of this meeting will be to meet the needs of practitioners who are engaged in this transition. When EUS was first introduced in the early 1980 s, it was accepted primarily for its unique imaging capabilities of visualizing the gut wall and the pancreaticobiliary system. Its unique imaging capabilities, however, are being eroded by further development in CT and MRI as well as new imaging modalities such as PET. The future for EUS lies in leveraging those capabilities of EUS that remain unique, which in large part lies in its ability to visualize, target and sample structures within and adjacent to the gastrointestinal tract. Thus, the future for EUS lies predominantly in the linear array echoendoscope and its ability to perform EUS-guided FNA as well as interventions. For these reasons, EUS 2008 will be devoted entirely to linear endosonography. The program will begin with teaching the fundamentals of imaging with the linear echoendoscope and will progress to teaching EUS FNA techniques as well as preparation and handling of cytology samples. It will conclude with teaching the current clinically applicable EUS intervention techniques such as celiac plexus block and pseudocyst drainage, but it will also include near and far future interventional techniques. We believe that this course will fully equip the practicing endosonographer for the future. We hope to see you in San Francisco. 1

5 PROGRAM OUTLINE Two full days of presentation. Participants will receive enduring materials related to linear EUS. Strong focus on teaching a systematic technique using the linear echoendoscope. Something for all endosonographers with spectrum of presentations covering standard linear anatomy to complex interventional techniques. Practical models for teaching the basics of EUS FNA and exhibition. Poster presentations. Abstracts and lectures to be published in supplement of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. CALL FOR ABSTRACTS Participants wishing to make scientific contributions are invited to submit abstracts for oral and/or poster presentations by April 1, Abstract submissions must be made via the official EUS website: ABSTRACT REVIEW & SELECTION Abstracts will be reviewed and selected by the Program Committee. Confirmation of acceptance or rejection will be ed to the corresponding address at the latest, on June 1, The best abstracts will be selected for oral presentation during the plenary sessions. The best abstracts will be awarded three special prizes at the closing ceremony on Saturday afternoon. 3

7 SAN FRANCISCO INFORMATION HISTORY Prior to 1850 and statehood, San Francisco was under Spanish and Mexican rule and was considered and valued as nothing more than a trading post. The city was literally a cluster of houses between Telegraph Hill and the El Rincon. The Gold Rush put San Francisco on the map as strangers arrived from all over the world to stake their claim and strike it rich! The city continued to grow during this age of prosperity. The boom years came crashing to a halt on the 18th of April, 1906 when the infamous earthquake and subsequent fire hit the city. Much of the city was destroyed, but the city survived and was built up from the ashes. The San Francisco city flag depicts a phoenix rising which commemorates this achievement. Currently well over a million people reside in San Francisco and the surrounding suburbs support millions more. From San Francisco International Airport, San Francisco is a minute ride, and the taxi fare is approximately $40. Tips and tolls are extra, and taxis are available 24 hours a day from uniformed taxi dispatches at all the airports. RESTAURANTS San Francisco is famous for fantastic restaurants and a wide variety of cuisine. The concierge desk at your hotel can assist you with any recommendations, or you may consult for restaurant reviews. BANKING/POST OFFICES Banks, cash points, exchanges offices and post offices are available in the vicinity of the hotels, and they are usually open daily 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and Saturday mornings. You can also use your credit or debit card at any ATM to get US dollars. Your bank account will be automatically debited in the currency of your account. The hotels can also exchange monies and post mail. WEATHER San Francisco in early fall is crisp and pleasant. The average temperature range is F or C.
