Brief for the position of DIRECTOR OF PHILANTHROPY The Eden Project LTD January 2018
1 CONTENTS 2 INTRODUCTION FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE ABOUT US OUR MISSION OUR ORGANISATION FINANCIAL SUMMARY JOB DESCRIPTION DEMANDS OF THE ROLE STRUCTURE, TRUSTEES AND DIRECTORS HOW TO APPLY
2 INTRODUCTION FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE Thank you for your interest in joining the Eden Project at this critical time in our development. The Eden Project is a charity that strives to connect us with each other and the living world. We re at a really exciting point in our story right now, which is why this new post of Director of Philanthropy is so important. We have big ambitions there has never been a more important time for people to appreciate and look after our planet and each other, and we re creating connections at our Cornish home, across the UK and internationally. Eden s Big Lunch unites millions of people in breaking bread together and turning neighbours into friends. At our site in the Clay Country of Cornwall we inspire, entertain and educate over a million visitors every year. And one of our most important new initiatives sees us developing new Eden Projects in the USA, China and across the world. Our work matters, and we can say with confidence that it is making a real and positive difference. We have much more to do; that s where you come in. We re going to need new sources of support: in particular, major donors and legacies to sit alongside our current funders such as trusts and foundations and the Lottery. We can provide important building blocks: a much-loved brand, millions of visitors, thousands of members and a track record of delivering imaginative and engaging projects ever since the original transformation of our site when Eden was created in Our leadership team is driving a new and ambitious strategy and we aim to make good on our promise to change the world; as Eden's Director of Philanthropy you will be an integral part of our team and sustainable growth strategy. Gordon Seabright, CEO
3 ABOUT US The Eden Project believes in: Transformation it s in our nature We demonstrate that regeneration and positive change are possible. Connection We connect people with each other and the living world that we all depend on for resources (such as food, medicines, materials) and services (such as climate regulation, air conditioning, water recycling). We provoke people to think about the challenges that are faced in balancing the cultivation of the land for resources with conservation of the land for services. Commonality What we share is greater than that which separates us. We share 80% of our needs. We hope to inspire people to engage and explore their commonalities because by working together we can achieve more. All of our stories pick up threads from this overarching narrative. It demonstrates hope and connects us before any challenges are posed. A positive approach showing that challenges can be overcome. A symbol of hope. WORK AT EDEN With around 400 core staff, we are a major employer in the county of Cornwall. In addition we have approximately 200 employees who join us for seasonal employment and around 150 volunteers. The majority of our employees are recruited locally. Eden provides opportunities for a wide range of posts covering an even wider range of skills, from horticulture, education and catering, to maintenance, commercial operations and head office type jobs. We are firmly committed to the development of our employees and provide fantastic opportunities for personal development and utilising skills in a creative environment. Eden operates an equal opportunity policy. We ve also signed up as a Disability Confident Employer, which means we re committed to ensuring our recruitment and staffing policies are inclusive and accessible.
4 OUR MISSION To reconnect humankind with the natural world and with each other through the power of transformation bringing science, art, nature and communities together. We have identified four themes to achieve our mission: Building Public Understanding of Science Connecting People to Nature and Each Other Growing the Global Eden Family Revolutionising the Teaching of Horticulture/Agriculture All Eden s activities interact and compliment each other. Our initiatives will each be defined by these themes with projects being added as they develop. Each theme is championed by an executive director with dedicated Eden staff.
5 OUR ORGANISATION Yan an, China The Eden Project s mission is to explore our dependence on the natural world, to use that understanding to excite people into delivering transformation where they live and to ask really serious questions about what a great future might look like for all of us. Our home in Cornwall, UK, is a striking contemporary garden for the 21st century combining botanical garden, plant collection, park and visitor destination. It is a living theatre of plants and people. The brainchild of Sir Tim Smit, Eden is an educational charity that connects people with each other and the living world. Seventeen years ago this disused china clay pit was transformed into a global garden to demonstrate what people could do when they put their minds to something. Nestled in a huge crater, two massive Biomes housing the largest rainforest in captivity and the fragrant landscapes of the Mediterranean serve as a spectacular backdrop to the scimitar-shaped beds of the Outdoor Gardens. Wild landscapes are juxtaposed with Europe s largest collection of useful plants, ranging from food crops to fuels and medicines to materials. Eden is a place where people come for good food, music, art, exhibitions, inspiration, and year round events, as well as to simply enjoy the beauty of the gardens. Beyond our home in Cornwall our biggest UK project The Big Lunch takes place annually in June and has more than nine million people taking part each year. The Big Lunch is a very simple idea from Eden. The aim is to get as many people as possible across the whole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours in a simple act of community, friendship and fun. Plans are afoot to expand this idea across the Commonwealth. Last year Eden announced a new company to drive the establishment of Edens around the world. Eden Project International Ltd (EPIL) is a new entity formed as part of the Eden Trust to partner with like-minded organisations to deliver the Eden mission and to deliver social and ecological benefits during a time of global environmental decline and social disruption. Eden Project International Ltd is currently working on three projects in China and others in Australia and New Zealand. Other overseas projects, including some in the Middle East and North America, are due to be announced in the coming months. With nearly 20 million visitors to date, Eden is a world-class attraction for all ages and interests, underpinned by transformational projects and learning programmes.
6 FINANCIAL SUMMARY It s been a good year for the Eden Project. We made a cash surplus from trading of more than 1.6 million in the last financial year. Turnover and visitor numbers also increased significantly during the period. Annual accounts for 2016/17 show that the trading cash surplus of 1,653,000 was down on the previous year s figure of 1,823,000. However, it is the fourth successive year that Eden has recorded a significant profit saw Eden making big investments in its staff and on improvements to the site. There have been increased costs meeting and exceeding the National Living Wage requirements by applying the wage to employees from age 21 rather than the mandatory 25. Building on the success of the previous three years, turnover increased for the financial year by more than 1.8 million mainly due to an increase in visitor numbers. For the first time since 2011, Eden welcomed more than a million visitors in a 12-month period and recorded our highest visitor numbers for December since opening. It has been another encouraging year, with good results in terms of our trading surplus, turnover and visitor numbers, all of which have helped us make significant investments in the team and our site. Peter Wroe, Finance Director Any surplus generated from the visitor destination and related income streams is used to support maintenance and investment on our site, educational programmes and financing costs. The surplus is not sufficient to cover all the costs and like many charities we seek the support of Charitable Trusts, grants and donations to deliver new educational projects in the societal, health and science arena. Eden is grateful to the support of its funders which has enabled the creation of the Weather Maker in the Rainforest Biome, the development of Invisible Worlds and the continuing success of Eden's development and outreach projects. The full financial report can be found here: company/
