2 WELCOME Ontario Electrical Safety Awards Promoting a Safer Ontario The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) inspires safety excellence through stakeholder engagement and cooperation to support its public electrical safety mandate. Operating in a broader provincial safety framework ESA appreciates the impact individual and organizational safety contributions make in promoting a safer Ontario. In 2010, ESA introduced the Ontario Electrical Safety Awards to acknowledge efforts that have advanced safety culture and support ESA in achieving our vision of an Ontario free of electrical fatalities, serious injury, damage or loss. Leadership is the most powerful component of culture, and safety leaders put visions into action to initiate a change in behaviour that can reduce fatalities, injury and damage. ESA presents awards that recognize outstanding contribution to safety in those areas that present the greatest harm to Ontarians. Ontario Electrical Safety Awards 2

3 Categories & safety awards criteria ESA celebrates contributions in THREE award categories: Powerline Workplace/ Safety Worker Safety Consumer/Home Electrical Safety Selection Criteria: The following criteria apply to all nominations for each category received by the ESA. Ensure the organization/individual has: Conducted research or contributed to research to impact safety standards or procedures Committed to and influenced safety practices over an extended period of time Demonstrated exceptional leadership to promote safety practices within an organization, community or industry Contributed to the development and implementation of prevention based safety programs Increased safety awareness or knowledge in a workplace, industry or community Improved safety in their workplace, industry or community A committee will review submissions based on nominations and supporting references. Award recipients will be notified in advance of the Ontario Electrical Safety Awards presentation which will be held on September 24, Ontario Electrical Safety Awards 3

4 benefits & eligibility Ontario Electrical Safety Awards Recognition Benefits: Safety mark for all digital and print materials Eligibility: Any individual or organization that has worked to advance Ontario s safety culture in one of the three award categories. An organization can include: businesses, associations, divisions or departments of a municipal or regional government. In addition: A. Local Distribution Company (LDC) Recognition in ESA Awards media release and awards promotional materials. Recognition in following year s awards nomination package. Recipients can promote their success through their own websites, news media, newsletters and other materials. Recipients also receive a certificate recognizing their award and an engraved crystal award. To be eligible for nomination, an LDC must have an acceptable compliance record noted in its most recent LDC audit report submitted to ESA as well as no documented non compliance findings from their most recent annual Due Diligence Inspections. B. Licensed Electrical Contractors (LEC) To be eligible for nomination, an LEC must have no documented licensing infractions or convictions in the previous 12-month period. C. Nominated individuals do not have to be residents of Ontario. D. A sponsor organization that has partnered with another organization in electrical safety initiatives may be nominated. E. Joint nominations for two or more individuals or organizations working in partnership on a common initiative are eligible. N.B. Directors and staff of the Electrical Safety Authority are not eligible for nomination. Ontario Electrical Safety Awards 4

Powerline Safety Category 2014 PowerStream Inc For its exceptional efforts in promoting powerline safety initiatives directed at both consumers and workers over the past year. The initiatives included consistent powerline safety messaging targeted to consumers on PowerStream s website, social media channels and through printed materials distributed at events London Hydro For its ongoing commitment to the safety of its workers and the public through the creation of their Incident Alert Safety Bulletin, designed to share information about incidents and near-misses with employees to raise awareness and prevent future incidents Burlington Hydro For its unwavering commitment to powerline electrical safety with targeted programs and awareness campaigns for elementary students, businesses and trades, as well as its own employees. Workplace/Worker Safety Category 2014 Utilities Kingston & the City of Kingston For their on-going commitment to hosting their annual Safety Days for employees and contractors who work for Utilities Kingston to provide safe work practices, including topics such as Safe Limits of Approach & the importance of Calling Before you Dig to avoid underground cables. The overall goal is to improve safety in the workplace Roy Burch - Guelph Hydro For his ongoing efforts to improve electrical safety training and education for First Responders when they encounter situations with new technologies such as solar rooftop panels and electric vehicles. Once these changes have been made I will give to Kath for her review. I think it will finally be more streamlined and easier to fill out Electrical Safety for Emergency Responders Committee For the committee s work in leading the development of a best practices handbook for emergency responders. The handbook would prepare them to recognize and manage potential electrical hazards in rescue and fire situations. The project committee was collaboration by Hydro One Networks Inc, the Public Services Health & Safety Association and the Office of the Fire Marshal. Consumer/Home Electrical Safety Category 2014 Hydro Ottawa For the development of their electrical safety and energy conservation educational program for elementary school children in the Ottawa and surrounding areas. The program teaches elementary students how to use electricity safely and wisely. The information is provided through free programs that highlight cautionary real life stories and demonstrations in both official languages Bryan Baeumler (Host) & Paul Rhynold (Licensed Electrical Contractor) HGTV s Leave it to Bryan for their consistent efforts to highlight the dangers in home renovations where work is done without a Licensed Electrical Contractor (LEC) and to drive home the message that an LEC is the only company legally allowed to do electrical work in a home, helping to ensure the work meets the requirements of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code Enersource Hydro Mississauga For on-going public outreach with its innovative and engaging e-smartkids website that provides students, teachers and families with important information on electrical safety and energy efficiency.
