3 Grow Chamber Spotlight Allison DiMatteo Employer: Creme Della Creme Copywriting & Communication I enjoy serving on the Chamber s Board of Directors because everyone involved shares and demonstrates a commitment to service, to growing positive opportunities in our community, and to respecting the ideas and service of their fellow board members. Different and unique perspectives come together to strengthen what the board does and, as a result, the impact that the Chamber s activities can have on the local business environment. It s been great to play a more active role in the social and business initiatives that are shaping our community. Being a member of the Chamber, as well as serving on its Board of Directors, has made this possible. Get To Know Allison! What is your favorite word? Phenomenon it s fun to say and reminds of the funny song that the Muppets sang on Sesame Street. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt? International Tour Guide. I love to travel and see different cultures and people and immerse myself, and I enjoy when other people enjoy doing the same. If you could go back in time to meet one individual. Who would it be? My great, great, great grand uncle, John Blaydes, who was an archeologist who discovered the mummified body of Priest Natsef Amun. I would love to learn about what inspired him, how he chose his profession, and what obstacles he faced and how he overcame them. What natural talent would you like to be gifted with? Drawing. I have creative visions and ideas, but I cannot execute them artistically or graphically. I admire people who can, and despite all my attempts and practice, this is not a talent I m meant to have. Fortunately, I have a very talented and skilled staff. What is your favorite motto? It depends on the day, to whom I m speaking, and what we re talking about. A good education will never decay, is a favorite that my grandmother once told me. I also like Yoda s There is do or do not. There is no try. Where is your favorite vacation spot? Martha s Vineyard after Labor Day. I love the ocean, sand, and breezes; the little shops and scooting around on mopeds or scooters; and just taking things leisurely with no point or purpose other than meandering. Where is your favorite place to eat in Cayuga County? My mother-in-law s kitchen, or my own kitchen when my husband is cooking! Seriously, she makes some awesome chicken cutlets, pasta and sauce, and other yummy Italian treats. And my husband makes great jumbalaya, homemade macaroni and cheese, and pasta fagiole. But if you mean restaurants, there are several, and again, my favorite at any given time depends on my mood. What is your favorite pastime? That would be fashion finding, whether in stores, magazines, or in my own cluttered closet. But seriously, it s spending time with my two granddaughters. Allison is on the Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. 4 Grow A community needs help from all sides By: Daniel Lovell No matter which side of the aisle you re on, you have to respect the folks who are running for public office this election season. At IGNITE s forum for City Council candidates earlier this month, we were treated to some spirited debate over the issues, including the firefighter contract, the future of economic development in the city, the city budget and the cogeneration plant. And while the message from each candidate was different, they all showed obvious passion for Auburn. We re lucky to have such talented and dedicated individuals stepping up to represent us. In the past couple of weeks, I was also treated to a video presentation shown at the Chamber of Commerce s annual dinner, which featured business leaders from around the county. Each discussed the projects they were working on to better the community. Cayuga Milk Products, the Plaza of the Arts and the Abbott House were just three of the projects highlighted. You couldn t help but walk away from the presentation feeling like our community is, in some respects, on an upswing. Again, each of these business leaders displayed passion for the area. Whether it s running for public office or starting a new business, there s a certain amount of risk involved. To do so means facing public scrutiny and obstacles in order to succeed. It takes a strong back and thick skin, and anyone who embarks on these endeavors deserves credit for their effort and hard work. In watching the forum and the video presentation, I was also reminded how proud I am to be an IGNITE member and of all we re accomplishing in the community. We are now planning our third annual IGNITE the Winter celebration for March. We ve just complete another successful IGNITE the Vote campaign that included a forum in front of a packed house at Hilton Garden Inn. And I swell a little with pride whenever I pass the new gateway signs welcoming visitors to Auburn. Soon, we will announce another new project I believe will enhance the quality of life here. I m a proud member of IGNITE because we are a group of people who are working for change in our community. And I believe we re making strides each year. We can make even more strides with your help. If you re a young professional, support IGNITE with a membership. Your ideas, passion and muscle can make a huge difference. If you re a business owner, please consider sponsoring IGNITE by offering discounts or special offers to IGNITE members. Daniel Lovell is chairman of the IGNITE Steering Committee and an Auburn resident. Contact IGNITE by at info@ignite-cny.org or find us on our website at

6 Support Did You Know... Employers that offer prescription drug coverage must provide a creditable or non-creditable coverage disclosure notice to all Medicare Part D eligible individuals on an annual basis by October 15? The Medicare Modernization Act (MMA) requires employers to notify eligible policyholders and dependents of whether or not their coverage is creditable, meaning that the coverage is expected to pay on average as much as the Medicare prescription drug coverage. Notification is required at least once a year and at the following times: Prior to an individual s initial enrollment period for Part D; Prior to the effective date of coverage for any Medicare-eligible individual that joins your plan; Whenever prescription drug coverage ends or changes so that it is no longer creditable or becomes creditable; Prior to the Medicare Part D Annual Coordinated Election Period beginning on October 15 of each year; Upon the request of a beneficiary. Additionally, most entities are required to complete an online disclosure form to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The disclosure should be completed no later than 60 days after the beginning date of the plan year, within 30 days of a prescription drug plan termination, or within 30 days of any change in creditable coverage status. The online disclosure form can be completed at: Creditable Coverage Disclosure Form The MMA imposes a late enrollment penalty on individuals that do not maintain creditable coverage for 63 days or longer following their initial enrollment period for the Medicare prescription drug benefit. Accordingly, this information is important in an individual s decision to enroll in the Part D plan. 7 Support Statewide tax hearings The Business Council of New York State and other business leaders testified at tax hearings convened by the New York State Senate Finance and Investigations Committees in early September. The five statewide public hearings focused on how New York s tax policies can be changed to reduce the burden on taxpayers and to help businesses create more jobs. The Business Council provided testimony at the first hearing in Albany highlighting the need for improving New York s business climate and economic growth. It said broad-based business tax reforms would improve the state s economic climate. Modernizing business taxes, redu ing marginal tax rates, and eliminating the 1.5-percent alternative minimum tax, were among other measures supported. Tax reform that would improve the way taxes are administered at the state and local level would reduce both business and government tax administration costs. The Council also stated that tax credits could play a role in promoting new capital investment and job creation and recommended amendments to several tax credit programs that promote new investment and could be implemented on a pay for performance basis. Numerous studies show that New York leads the nation in combined state and local tax burdens. Businesses pay approximately 25 percent of all state taxes and 40 percent of local taxes for a combined tax burden of 34 percent, according to The Public Policy Institute of New York State, Inc. 25 104th Annual Dinner October 16, 2013 Over 300 Community members across Cayuga County joined together at the Emerson Park Pavilion for the Annual Chamber Dinner. This year s theme, Build Cayuga, was centered around growth and development. The video presentation showcased a few of the many individuals who have worked to develop Cayuga County s infrastructure to showcase new and exciting opportunities. Those who assisted in the production of the presentation were Dan Soules, Soules & Dunn Development Group; Sue Edinger, The Inns of Aurora; Kevin Ellis, Cayuga Milk Ingredients; John Currier, Currier Plastics; Grant Kyle, Brister Mills; and Ormie King, well known local historian. All viewed the region as being a prosperous and dynamic place to live, work, and stay. Their progressive views of the opportunities and solid foundation of development in Cayuga County demonstrates our hopes for a rising economy in the future. Chamber members also experienced the largest Annual Chamber Dinner in history. The Emerson Park Pavilion was full of vibrant and progressive business men and women who care about the future of Cayuga County and the Chamber of Commerce. Attendees were also given the opportunity to bid on several items donated by community businesses, and individuals as a fund-raiser. From tools to golf packages, and a overnight stay at the Abbott House, the items were astounding. Also apart of the celebration was when the Chair s Award for Excellence was awarded to Kelly Buck, Chamber Board Member and Director of Marketing and Development at Unity House. Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce Director, Andrew Fish, described the dinner as being a wonderful evening highlighting only a few of the growing developments in our county. The Annual Dinner is without a doubt, one of the major events of the year that all Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce businesses, governmental, and community leaders anticipate. The evening could not have been possible without the help and support of all sponsors, and donations of auction items from local community members. The chamber staff and board of directors thanks all those who attended and supported your local chamber of commerce, and our members achievements, and looks forward to working together to help continue to make a difference in Cayuga County.
