2 CONNECTING PEOPLE WITH IR FAMILIES AND WORK PAGE 2 East Midlands Trains, the Derby headquartered rail company, moves more than 25m passengers per year, manages 89 stations and employs over 2,000 people. They connect people to their families, their jobs and their leisure activities throughout and through the East Midlands. They rely on an endless list of partner organisations to help them deliver a great experience to customers. Many of these organisations are small and medium sized. If you go onto any of their stations such as Nottingham and Derby, to name but two, you would see small independent retailers. Many of their suppliers, particularly engineering and on-train catering are small, specialist organisations that add much to their offer and help drive the local economies which they serve. East Midlands Trains are one of the keenest supporters of all train companies of Community Rail and see working with smaller organisations as one of the key reasons they have recently scored highly in Which survey for best commuter satisfaction. East Midlands Trains are always keen to hear the views of local businesses and have recently appointed dedicated Stakeholder Managers, Duncan Cale and Donna Adams, to work across the region to build even strong relationships with stakeholders. If you would welcome a conversation with East Midlands Trains contact duncan.cale@eastmidlands. HOW TO MAKE YOUR WEBSITE WORK Following a fantastic turnout when the Nottingham Branch delivered a business signposting and support Pop-up Clinic at Th!nk, Branch Vice-Chairwoman, Leonie Winson, has put together top tips to make your website work for a living. Define the purpose of your website. Make your answer about what your website should really DO? Know your audience. Create customer profiles, these will help you target your website to the needs of your customers. Set measurable goals. Without goals you have nothing to measure against. Don t treat your stats as a score card. The number of hits does not matter! Spend time understanding your reports. It is the quality of traffic that matters not just the number of visitors to your site. Don t be shy! Successful businesses build relationships and create loyal advocates to their brand. Showcase the people in your business. Create search engine friendly content It is true that Google likes content heavy websites. Update your website regularly.

3 DERBY TELEGRAPH AWARD NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR BUSINESS AWARDS The Federation of Small Businesses is proud to be one of the sponsors at the annual Derby Telegraph Business Awards. We are thrilled to be sponsoring the prestigious event alongside a fantastic line-up of other sponsors. Derbyshire is a thriving hub of many fantastic businesses so we were extremely pleased to be able to shine a light on its vibrant local businesses and resilient entrepreneurs. The awards are a brilliant opportunity for businesses to extend their networks, reinforce existing connections and celebrate achievements. We look forward to what is bound to be an extraordinary event. The awards aim to celebrate success, recognise achievement and highlight the innovative people and companies in Derbyshire who are putting our region on the map by boosting the economy while making a positive contribution to the local community. Like the organisations, FSB believe that the passion, determination, tireless energy and skill that goes into running a top-performing business deserves recognition and the 13 award categories are designed to celebrate businesses from across a range of sectors. Not only does winning a business award mean recognition for the business owner or management team, it is also a major morale boost for the workforce. The final, which will take place at The Roundhouse, Derby College on Thursday 8 June, will be attended by Derbyshire s business elite. It will be a celebration of the county s best businesses and a reminder that Derbyshire is a great place to do business. The evening, like all top business award ceremonies, will also provide a fantastic networking opportunity, uniting the Derbyshire s business community in a positive way. 6 DON T BE CAUGHT OUT BE FLOODS The British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) have announced their new scheme aimed at improving the way small businesses can get insurance cover against flood risk. We advise any business having difficulty accessing affordable flood insurance to contact BIBA s Find a Broker Service on BIBA participating brokers can assess individual buildings flood risks more accurately because of their access to new databases and their willingness to take account of flood prevention measures taken by the building occupiers who seek flood insurance. The BIBA participating brokers can also - where flood cover insurance is available through this new system - take action to reduce flood policy excesses through the reinsurance market. BIBA do not guarantee that all businesses will always be able to obtain insurance, but a significant number of businesses who currently cannot should be able now to do so, and with much reduced policy excesses. FSB members can also contact FSB Insurance on or visit FSB Insurance Service s website for further information. BOOKING NOW LIVE FOR REGIONAL ACTIVITIES The Region is moving forward with a great calendar of activity for Through our business networking meetings we constantly encourage our members to get to know each other s skills in a more meaningful way. In March we will work with Nottingham Trent University to deliver our Stakeholders Luncheon which has previously been attended by an impressive number of MPs and Ministers. We are proud that the Luncheon brings together small business owners, local influencers and decision makers so that we can work together to champion the vital role small firms play in the Region. In May our Start Challenge will be held for the fifth year and workshops will be held in Nottingham and Derby, for more information see page two. There are also a number of Business/ Policy Meetings, Bassetlaw will play host to a tourism themed round table and a Chesterfield round table will look at exporting. A Nottingham round table event will be scheduled later in the year. There are also a number of social events including a Meet the Members Dinner and Summer Ball.
