1 Cornwall An Lev Negys Rag Kernow Your Development Manager: or call March/April 2017 TWO NEW MEMBER-LED GROUPS DRIVING CORNWALL FORWARD We are a member led organisation and it is important that members decide on our policies and events and how you want us to communicate with your fellow members and the wider community. To that end we have established two new task groups. Roger Tarrant, FSB Mid Cornwall Branch Chairman, will be Cornwall Lead, Policy and External Communications. This group will co-ordinate local issues, develop policies, lobbying and communications liaising with authorities, partners, businesses and the media. Subject driven task and finish groups, created by members with issues to address, will also be supported by them. Roger is an experienced local businessman based near Bodmin. He owns and runs a business in the care sector as well as currently working on some new business initiatives. He is therefore, well-qualified to lead this group tackling first hand the issues, the trials and tribulations that accompany new ventures and demanding, heavily regulated industries. Edward Champan, an East Cornwall member, will be Cornwall Lead, Events and Internal Communications. The focus INSURANCE SUPPORT FOR SMES IN FLOOD-RISK AREAS With flooding, or the risk of flooding, being a major concern for many businesses in this region, FSB has welcomed new proposals from the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) aimed at improving the way SMEs get insurance cover. Flooding has devastated businesses in Cornwall and other parts of our region in recent years so the news that BIBA can assess flood risks more accurately and take account of flood prevention measures has been welcomed by FSB. If you are having difficulty accessing affordable insurance please contact BIBA on or call FSB Insurance on ROGER TARRANT, CORNWALL LEAD, POLICY AND EXTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS of this group will be how best FSB locally gets across business information and campaigns and translates all aspects of FSB work to our Cornish members. This group will also want to make sure that members maximise use of all FSB services including networking and lobbying. Edward is based in Bude and, like Roger, has experience in business. Previously an Accountant, he now runs a EDWARD CHAPMAN, CORNWALL LEAD, EVENTS AND INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS business representing sporting brands, either as an agent or distributor. He knows how business works and is a great communicator. As an ultra-marathon runner he also has boundless energy. Roger and Edward. SOUTH WEST GETS ALL SET TO HOST OUR MAJOR EVENT The annual FSB Conference and National Business Show is being held in the South West in March with hundreds of SME owners including many from this region set for an event to remember. The conference takes place from March 23 to 25 at the Riviera International Centre in Torquay and, as well as an array of top class speakers and debates, visitors will enjoy our National Business Show with a variety of stalls and exhibitors. Entries are being judged this month and the final will take place on 10 May in a glittering ceremony staged at the Underglobe Swan Shakespeare s Globe Theatre and hosted, once again, by businessman Tim Campbell MBE, the original winner of the BBC s popular show, The Apprentice. Each of the 11 category winners will receive cash prizes of 2,000 and are in the running to be crowned the FSB & Worldpay UK Business of the Year The exceptional business and overall winner awarded this accolade will also win a further cash prize of 10,000. Eligible applicants can apply for funding through Local Action Groups (LAGs). Your LAG will prioritise funding for projects that create jobs, help your business to grow and benefit the rural economy. LEADER is part of the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE). It is a French acronym which translates as Liaison among Actors in Rural Economic Development. A LAG is made up of people from the community and the local public and private sector. FSB provides FOWEY HARBOUR experienced business representatives. LAGs decide which projects they will fund in their area. There are four area groups in Cornwall, West Cornwall, Coast to Coast, Atlantic and Moor and South and East Cornwall.
