1 ...Specially for our valued partners A group of trainees from ITE helped build the first assembled-in- Singapore Motor Image Subaru WRX STI that has been winning at the 2007 Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC). At the Subaru Hub in Toa Payoh where the car was assembled, there was a great sense of achievement, especially for the trainees who helped build the car which defending champion Cody Crocker drove. Mathan Haridass, a trainee automotive technician at Motor Image Enterprises Pte Ltd, an Approved Training Centre (ATC) under ITE s Industry-based Training Scheme, enthused that he was proud that as apprentices, they were given the opportunity to work together with professionals from New Zealand and Japan. Apart from being the only agent outside Japan licenced by Subaru to produce these rally vehicles, Motor Image is also the first company to get the green light from the Economic Development Board to manufacture cars in Singapore. Gregory Lim, head of Automotive Technology at ITE College West, affirmed that ITE aims to ensure that its curriculum is up-to-date, relevant and meets the needs of the industry by working closely with the representatives of the automotive industry. He credited Motor Image for being a role model for the industry going beyond the comprehensive broad-based training offered by ITE. He believed that with additional opportunities provided for these trainees, it would value add to their training and experience gained. Glenn Tan, group chief executive of Motor Image Singapore was in total agreement with this when he said, This would be a good training ground for them so that when they graduate they'll be ready with specialised engineering skills." This was not the first time these trainees had set records. In Nov 06, these trainees were also roped in as part of the team to put together the first two rally cars into competition-ready Group N rally cars. They had the opportunity to work with a group of senior technicians and experts from New Zealand and Japan. They also provided on-site maintenance of the completed cars at a rally demonstration held at Sentosa. On the whole, the trainees shared that by working side by side with the experts, they have gained many new skills while working on the project. The experience of the trainees has shown that the ATC scheme has its merits as it allows companies to quickly utilise students to explore new company business ventures without over stretching its existing manpower. The skills acquired by the trainees during formal training is of a high standard which allow them to undertake work that will normally be given to full fledged skilled technicians.

4 OJT Certificate Presentation at Senoko Power Limited Senoko Power was accredited as a Certified On-the-Job Training Centre (COJTC) in Initially, the company started off with introducing OJT to a few key sections of the plant operations. When the company experienced great success in the introduction of structured training, Mr Razali Raihan, Production Planning Manager and OJT Administrator was tasked to achieve company-wide implementation. According to Mr Roy Adair, the Chief Executive Officer of Senoko Power, he affirmed that the key success factor in attaining wide implementation and acceptance of the scheme is to empower the staff to take on the responsibilities to develop training blueprints and obtain support in conducting training. It is worthwhile to note that under the COJTC scheme, a company can award its deserving employees the Certificate of Appointment and Certificate of Completion for appropriate tasks accomplished. Companies who are accredited usually request for these certificates and present them to their staff. The company held a formal presentation ceremony to officially recognise the efforts taken by their staff on 10 Apr Mr James Ng, ITE s Divisional Director/ Industry-based Training, who was present to witness the certificate presentations said, I m impressed with the strong commitment given by Senoko Power s Senior Management continuous upgrading and training of all levels of their staff. He complimented Senoko Power for its effective use of the ITE COJTC system in the training and upgrading of its technical workforce. The Certificates of Appointment and Certificates of Completion were handed out to the company s OJT instructors and staff who had completed their training by Mr Adair. The staff were beaming with pride as they were presented their certificates from the management. The highlight of the ceremony was the photo taking with the senior management of the company and ITE. The pictures taken at the presentation ceremony would serve as timely reminders to the staff of Senoko Power on the success of OJT implementation at Senoko Power. Striving to be DYNAMIC coaches! Overwhelming is the right word to describe the number of participants who had registered for the COJTC workshops held at Furama City Centre on 12th and 20th Sept The topic that had attracted such great response, the OJT Implementation- Towards Dynamic Coaching was specially organised by the COJTC team for our industry partners. The workshops were also extended to some members of the public who had expressed keenness to attend. The two workshops registered close to 70 participants who were introduced to vital tips on how to conduct training effectively using the easy-to-follow 5-Step Coaching Process as well as the prerequisites required of a good OJT instructor. Fun-filled activities were included in the workshop to enhance participants learning. They were also given the opportunity to role-play and put what they have learnt into practice. Audiences were left laughing when the scenes similar to what they had encountered at their work place were enacted. The workshops were once again been well received by the industry. Participants had shown keenness to attend future workshops by requesting for more information. Keep a lookout for our invitations to the workshops to be held in Stay tuned for the next issue of this newsletter for more updates! Oh no, this can t be for real! Participants sharing some hearty moments. Facilitators for the 2 classes Tong It Hong (left) and Derrick Tan (right). Hello, no peeping.
5 Springing to Success! One common thread of thought was constantly highlighted on 13 Apr 07, at Kato Spring Singapore Pte Ltd s official launch of the ITE s Certified On-the-Job Training Centre (COJTC) by Ms Katherine Foo, Regional Managing Director of Kato Spring (S) Pte Ltd and Mr Paul Kato, Chairman & CEO, Advanex Group. Ms Foo underlined the importance of investing in people to optimise their potential and build a world class team so as to become a valuable partner to their customers while Mr Kato emphasised that in this changing environment, we must upgrade our skill and technology all the time as TRAINING is one of the keys for success. Sharing this same sentiment was Mr Aw York Bin, Deputy CEO (Industry) of ITE, who was invited to grace the ceremony. He pointed out that in today s dynamic and competitive market, companies need to constantly produce more innovative and higher-quality products and provide excellent quality services to stay ahead. To do that, companies should capitalise on its most precious assets - its human resources, as our people are key to success in our business and should be developed to their fullest potential. This has become more critical today when competing in a global economy where costs and services provided by other developing economies are very competitive when weighed against Singapore s. Hence, to maintain our competitive edge and strengthen our global competitiveness, the need for continual development and upgrading of our human capital at all levels and across all sectors of the economy is crucial. In this respect, structured OJT is an important training system for an organisation to adopt in the training and upgrading of the skills of its workforce. It has been proven to be cost-effective, flexible and tailored to the needs of employers and employees. Kato Spring, a member of Advanex group with its headquarters, Advanex Inc, in Japan, has close to 30 years of manufacturing experience in Singapore and is now the regional headquarters for Asia. The training centre is dedicated to provide continuous training, using the structured framework of COJTC to the group to enhance the skill competencies of its technicians. This structured training system will definitely help to synergise Best Practices among its employees. With the attainment of the COJTC status, the company aims to provide a total people development programme. The company also believe that the COJTC status will enhance its image and increase the company s competitive edge. The accreditation of the company will encourage them to build their capability to develop and conduct in-house structured OJT programmes. Lee Kuan Yew Model Student/Trainee Award An Exemplary Role Model to Emulate! When Siti Zubaidah Bte Haji Abdul Moin applied to do a one-year traineeship programme in Nitec in Service Skills (Office) in ITE, she decided that the way to acquire her skills was to extend her learning in a real work environment through traineeship. Siti knew that traineeship would give her a strong skills foundation by learning on-the-job from training provided by GIS Technology Pte Ltd, the company that sponsored her for traineeship. Within a short period of initiation, Siti adjusted very well to her new traineeship training environment that comprised working 4 days-a-week at her employer s premises and attending day-release classes once a week at ITE College Central (Bishan Campus). Both her employer and lecturers found Siti to be diligent, independent, self-motivated and possessing strong interpersonal skills and initiative when attending to company s clients. Also, Siti was always prepared to go the extra distance to assist her company s customers and colleagues alike. Through Traineeship, I had many opportunities to excel and stand out from the rest. The ITE education had brought out the best in me, exclaimed this young lady who attributed her success to the care and concern of her dedicated lecturers and loving support from her family members. Despite her commitments, Siti excelled in her studies and made it to the top 5% of her cohort. This young woman aspires to further her studies. But for now, she is putting her newly acquired skills to good practice at her work place, GIS Technology Pte Ltd.
6 Why Evaluate Training? An effective evaluation of your training will help you measure the success of your efforts in reaching your target audience as well as identify the strengths and weaknesses of your training programme for eg what has worked or does not work. Besides, it will back up your arguments when there is a need for greater investment in training, when major changes need to be made in business direction, when there is stiffer competition for resources or when times get tough. Main Reasons for Better Evaluation of Training 1. To validate training as a business tool Training is one of many actions that an organisation can take to improve its performance and profitability. Only when training is properly evaluated, can it be then compared against other methods and outcome. 2. To justify the costs incurred in training We all know that when an organisation s budget is tight, training budgets are amongst the first to be sacrificed. Only by thorough, quantitative analysis can training departments make the case necessary to resist these cuts. 3. To help improve the design of training Training programmes should be continuously improved to provide better value and increased benefits for an organisation. Without formal evaluation, the basis for changes can only be subjective. 4. To help in selecting training methods There are many alternative approaches available to training departments such as classroom training, e-learning, on-the-jobtraining and self-study methods. Using comparative evaluation techniques, organisations can make rational decisions about the methods to adopt. Jun Nov 2007 Welcome New Approved Training Centres (ATCs)!!!
