3 Who We Are and What We Do The National Trust for Historic Preservation ( is a non-profit membership organization bringing people together to protect, enhance and enjoy the places that matter to them. By saving the places where great moments from history and the important moments of everyday life took place, the National Trust for Historic Preservation helps revitalize neighborhoods and communities, spark economic development and promote environmental sustainability. 3

6 Guidelines and Criteria Non-profit organizations & public agencies Three deadlines: February 1, June 1, October 1 Matching grants (dollar for dollar) Typical Award: $2,500-$5,000 Eligible Activities: Consulting services in areas such as architecture, archaeology, preservation, engineering, education Sponsoring workshops & community forums Designing, producing, and marketing printed materials to advance historic preservation 6

7 Guidelines and Criteria Applications are reviewed against the following criteria: The historic significance of the property or resource; The soundness & thoroughness of the project plan, including goals & timeline for completion The project budget & the applicant s ability to secure matching funds; Diversity of resource type & project location; The project s visibility & its potential to act as a catalyst to benefit other historic properties, neighborhoods, or communities 7

8 Examples of Funded Projects Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation, San Francisco, $10,000 Research and document the historic inscriptions carved into the barrack walls at the Angel Island Immigration Station. (Mitchell) City of San Jose, Department of Planning, $5,000 Conduct an Intensive Level Survey of San Jose s Japantown. (Favrot) Little Manila Foundation, Stockton, $4,000 Fund a Historic Structures Report for the three remaining historic buildings in Little Manila, the Emerald Restorant, the Rizal Social Club, and the Mariposa Hotel. 8

9 Los Angeles County Preservation Fund Third round closing on Friday, May 20, 2011 Within LA County Bricks-and-mortar & surveys Funds may not be used for property acquisition or overhead City of Los Angeles Planning Department Office of Historic Resources, $5,000 - assist with the SurveyLA Public Participation and Outreach Implementation Program (August 2010) 9

10 Examples of Projects Funded through the Los Angeles County Preservation Fund Friends of La Laguna, San Gabriel, $10,000 Repair the wooden dock that serves as a formal entrance into the sandy lagoon of La Laguna playground (March 2010) El Sereno Bungalow Collective, Los Angeles, $8,500 Prepare a Historic Structures Report for La Casitas, a compound of 4 small duplex bungalows on Maycrest Ave (August 2010) San Fernando Valley Historical Society $5,000 Conduct an archaeogeophysical survey of Sylmar s Pioneer Cemetery, the 2nd oldest cemetery in the San Fernando Valley (March 2010) 10
