1 ASIAN AMERICAN ARCHITECTS AND ENGINEERS FOUNDATION OVERVIEW OF SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENT APPLICATION 1. Objective: The Asian American Architects and Engineers Foundation (AAa/e Foundation) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing opportunities and scholarships for students pursuing a career in architecture, engineering or construction. The Foundation was created in 2004 as a branch of the Asian American Architects / Engineers Association of Southern California ( to better support efforts to seek additional means of fundraising for our scholarships, and to better serve our students. The Asian American Architects/Engineers Association is committed to the empowerment of design professionals in personal growth, professional excellence, business development, and leadership in our communities. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide encouragement and financial incentive for the students to excel in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, and construction. 2. Qualifications: A. Must be a student member of AAa/e. (apply online at and click on Membership ) B. Student in good standing and currently attending a community college. C. Student must be a U.S. Permanent Resident or U.S. Citizen, or a non-us student attending a US college/university full-time (proof shall be submitted upon request) D. Student will have demonstrated a measurable level of involvement and/or service to the Asian/Pacific Islander community (Please express in personal statement). E. Student must demonstrate interest in working towards a degree in one of the following fields: 1. Architecture. 2. Engineering: Civil (Environmental, Geotechnical, Structural, Transportation) Electrical, and Mechanical. 3. Landscape Architecture or Planning and Urban Design. 4. Construction/Construction Management by currently enrolled in or successful completion of AEC related college level courses. F. Scholarship recipients are required to be present at the Awards Banquet (on Thursday, October 2, ) to accept their awards and are expected to provide their own transportation to the dinner location. (Millennium Biltmore Hotel Los Angeles, 506 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90071) No exceptions will be made. G. Scholarship recipient must be available to participate in filming for a short video clip to be shown at the Awards Banquet. Date of filming TBD. No exceptions will be made.

2 3. Submittal Requirements: A complete application package includes the following which will be further described: A. AAa/e Scholarship Applicant Data form B. Personal Statement C. Two (2) Letters of Recommendation D. Resume E. Sample of Work Submission will be accepted either hard copies via mail or electronic file via . For hard copies sent via mail, please submit all material bound together. Some options include 3-ring binders, comb binding, a stapled package, etc. For electronic files sent via , please reference AAa/e Foundation Scholarship Application in the Subject line. Only word files and pdf files will be accepted. Please note that all electronic submittals will be reviewed in 8.5 x11 or 11 x17 prints. A. Personal Statement (1) One page (maximum) typewritten Describe your involvement/service to the Asian/Pacific Islander community, local community, and/or general public. Describe your interest in the field of architecture, engineering, or construction. Describe what makes you unique- leadership roles, academic achievements, etc. C. Two (2) Letters of Recommendation Letters may be written from faculty members of your respective school or employers from your industry-related job experience. Recommendations must be mailed separately, and addressed directly to the following: AAa/e Foundation Scholarship Committee Asian American Architects and Engineers Foundation D. Resume (1) One page maximum typewritten E. Sample of Work The submission can be one of the following: o A complete school project related to architecture, engineering, or construction. o An assignment from a class related to architecture, engineering, or construction.

3 4. Due Date: o An assignment from work related to architecture, engineering, or construction. o A school team project, but all participants names must be listed on the submission. The Sample of Work will need to be accompanied by a short essay (maximum three pages) which provides project description, goals, methods, and results. (For team projects, the short essay must also include a description of the applicant's contribution to the team project.) The Sample of Work submission including appendices should not exceed (15) fifteen pages. Submittal package must be postmarked on or before Friday May 30th,, at 4:00 pm. Personal Statements 50% iii. Project / Sample Work 30% Please note that the visual elements as well as typewritten descriptions and/or captions go hand-in-hand in presenting a strong, well-founded project. The two are equally important and should mutually support each other. A judging criteria sheet has been attached for your reference. Decisions made by the Scholarship Committee shall be final and shall be awarded at the complete discretion of the Foundation. 6. Award Date: Final Decisions will be made, and applicants notified by the beginning of September. Scholarship awards will be presented at the AAa/e Awards Banquet on Thursday, October 2,. Scholarship recipients are required to be present at the awards dinner to accept their awards and are expected to provide their own transportation to the dinner location. Dinner itself will be complimentary.

4 7. Other Information: A. Exact dollar amount of awards are subject to the availability of funds and the discretion of the AAa/e Foundation and its judges. B. The awardee is responsible for all taxes, etc. and other costs of the submittal.
