1 PILOT PROJECT CREATION-PRODUCTION RESIDENCY IN NEW ARTISTIC PRACTICES Presentation

PREAMBLE The Conseil des arts de Montréal, La Chapelle Scènes contemporaines, the réseau Accès culture, the Borough of Montréal-Nord and the Regroupement des arts interdisciplinaires du Québec (RAIQ) are joining forces so as to improve the practice conditions and professional development of artists involved in new artistic practices, to improve the emergence of artistic works that try to go beyond disciplinary boundaries and to acquaint the Montreal public with these practices. This residency is designed for professional organizations and artists (collectives) working in new artistic practices and more especially in interdisciplinary artistic practices. Such practices combine the knowledge, skills and ways of thinking of two or more artistic and nonartistic disciplines, and interrelate their languages and lexicons. They are different from pluridisciplinary or multidisciplinary practices in that they do not simply juxtapose various disciplines (music, dance, theatre, visual arts, digital arts) in a single work, but rather seek, through their interrelationship, to create a new aesthetic, a new artistic language. The Creation-Production Residency in new Artistic Practices thus offers an organization or artists collective an opportunity to pursue the creation of an interdisciplinary work and to produce it in various dedicated and equipped locations. This residency also enables the organization or collective selected to benefit from artistic and/or technical coaching services, in collaboration with RAIQ. Finally, the organization or collective will have an opportunity to carry out two cultural mediation activities, in collaboration with the Maison culturelle et communautaire de Montréal-Nord and the network Accès culture, and thus bring their artistic approach to the attention of the Montreal public and network professionals. The work proposed must already have been the subject of a prior research and/or creation stage. 2. OBJECTIVES This program is designed to: offer a professional artists collective or organization an opportunity to produce a new work in optimal financial and technical conditions; improve the conditions of artists practices and professional development in new artistic practices; promote the transfer of expertise among professionals in the same discipline; promote closer connections between new practice artists and municipal distributors on the Island of Montreal; promote the creation of a distribution network for new artistic practices; help make artists and interdisciplinarity known to the Montreal public; participate in the development of Montreal s cultural quarters. Public distribution of the work produced is not included in this pilot project. 2

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Organizations Status and conditions be a not-for-profit corporation or a not-for-profit artists cooperative 1 that does not distribute dividends; have headquarters on the Island of Montreal; have a board of directors composed mainly of Canadian citizens or permanent residents; have as a principal mission the creation and production of arts activities; comply with the definition of professional organization. 3.2 Artists (collectives) This program is also designed for representatives of a collective composed of professional artists. Members of the collective are those whose artistic actions have a direct effect on the creation/production of the group. Status and conditions be represented by an application supervisor; be composed of professional artists who all meet the definition of the Conseil ; be a group of artists, regardless of number; be composed of at least two-thirds Canadian citizens or permanent residents, that is, the proportion of members residing outside Canada may not exceed one-third; be composed of artists who have resided primarily (over 50% of the time) on the Island of Montreal for at least one year, including the application supervisor. 4 INELIGIBILITY 4.1 Organizations and artists (collectives): individual artists; artist collectives that are incorporated or registered as partnerships, whether forprofit or non-profit; public organizations, semi-public government organizations and municipal corporations. 4.2 Projects projects not yet started, that is, not having already been through a prior stage of research and/or creation; projects requiring minimal technical equipment not justifying the creation and production provisions offered under this residency. 4.3 Sectors organizations and collectives working exclusively in variety, song and humour. 1 The items in blue are defined in the glossary available at the following address: 3

4 4.4 Applications incomplete applications; applications received beyond the deadline. 5. NATURE OF ASSISTANCE The assistance provided is one-time and non-recurring. Only one (1) creation-production project will be selected under this pilot project. The creation-production project will take place in the studios of the Conseil des arts de Montréal (CAM) in the Édifice Gaston-Miron, between January 2018 and June 2018; in the hall of La Chapelle Scènes contemporaines, from June 18 to 29, 2018; and at the Maison culturelle et communautaire de Montréal-Nord, from September 24 to 28, The Conseil will give the organization or artists collective a creation-production grant of up to $15,000 to be used to cover the fees of the artists, designers and other collaborators in the project. The amount will be determined in accordance with the nature of the project and the number of artists and designers involved, as indicated in the budget for the project; The Conseil will also pay, for a maximum of 30 hours: - an experienced artistic consultant (author, playwright, director, choreographer, etc.) selected by the collective or organization; AND/OR - A coach or trainer who can provide the artists in the project with the artistic and/or technical expertise it requires. The network Accès culture will allocate to the Maison culturelle et communautaire de Montréal-Nord $1,500 to cover the technical requirements of the project not covered by the basic material and human resources available on-site. In exchange, the organization or collective will offer the professionals of the network Accès culture a cultural mediation activity (in addition to the one provided at the Maison culturelle et communautaire de Montréal-Nord), for which it will be paid a fee of $500. Duration of residency: 125 hours (20 hours in the CAM studios, 70 consecutive hours at La Chapelle Scènes contemporaines and 35 consecutive hours at the Maison culturelle et communautaire de Montréal-Nord) Nature of contribution: Conseil des arts de Montréal 1. Allocation of a creation-production grant of up to $15,000; 2. Standard budget for artistic and/or technical coaching, if required, of up to $900 (30 hours X $30/hour); 3. Loan free of charge of the studios of the Conseil des arts de Montréal for up to 20 hours; La Chapelle Scènes contemporaines 1. Loan free of charge of the hall, technical equipment and services of one technical director, for up to 70 hours; 2. Basic logistical and technical support during residency in the hall; 3. Access to Internet; 4. On-site reception and exchanges with the team. 4

5 Maison culturelle et communautaire de Montréal-Nord 1. Loan free of charge of the hall, technical equipment and services of a technical director for up to 35 hours; 2. Access to Internet; 3. Artistic, logistical and promotional support in cultural mediation. Regroupement des arts interdisciplinaires du Québec 1. Guidance and referencing services in artistic or technical coaching. Accès culture 1. Budget of $1,500 allocated to the Maison culturelle et communautaire de Montréal- Nord for the improvement of the technical resources made available to the project; 2. Artistic, logistical and promotional support in cultural mediation; 3. Artistic fee worth $500 for the holding of a cultural mediation activity for network professionals. All equipment not belonging to the basic inventory of the host sites (as specified in the appendix to this document) must be provided by the organization or collective at its own expense. 6. SCHEDULE November 3, 2017: deadline for receipt of application files; November 2017: meeting of selection board and board of directors; December 2017: announcement of winner; January 2018: planning meeting of the organization or collective with the four residency partners; January-June 2018: residency in the studios of the Maison du Conseil des arts Édifice Gaston-Miron; June 18 to 29, 2018: residency at La Chapelle Scènes contemporaines; September 24 to 28, 2018: residency at the Maison culturelle et communautaire de Montréal-Nord and mediation activity; November 2018: cultural mediation activity with professionals from the network Accès culture December 5, 2018: submission of final activity report. 7. EVALUATION CRITERIA Once they have been checked for eligibility, applications will be evaluated by a committee of peers from the Conseil des arts de Montréal, La Chapelle Scènes contemporaines, the Maison culturelle et communautaire de Montréal-Nord and the RAIQ. Criteria: Artistic quality: 70% artistic quality and relevance of the project; inventiveness and originality of the artistic approach; relevance of the project for the development of interdisciplinary practice; quality of previous artistic work by the organization or members of collective. Contribution to audience development: 15% interest of the organization or collective in engaging with audiences; 5

6 quality and interest of the mediation activity planned; adaptability of the work to the specificities of the Maison culturelle et communautaire de Montréal-Nord. Project management and financial stability: 15% feasibility of the project and realistic nature of the proposal; realistic nature of the budget provisions and financial balance; financial health (organization). 8. APPLICATION FILE The organization or collective must complete the application form for this pilot project. In addition, it must provide a description of the artistic project, including the intentions as they relate to an interdisciplinary approach and cultural mediation, a brief assessment of coaching and/or referencing needs in connection with the contribution by RAIQ, and a detailed budget for the project. Applicants must submit a single application in 21.6 cm X 27.9 cm (8½ X 11 in.) format by e- mail only. The documents must be paginated. Only the documents required will be conveyed to the members of the evaluation committee. 9.
