1 Artist Studios Program and The Edward and Sally Van Lier Arts Fellowship Application Guidelines All applications to the Artist Studios Program and The Edward and Sally Van Lier Arts Fellowship are done electronically. No written applications or original artwork will be accepted. Below is an outline of the electronic application process to help artists, designers and makers prepare their materials in advance. How do I apply? Visit the Artist Studios Application page at and select the To apply click here tab. To submit an application you must create a user account. You will be prompted to create a username and password before submitting application materials. Once your account is created, you can upload materials. Your application information is saved until you select the submit button. Only applications that are complete and submitted will be reviewed. Once submit has been selected, your application is final. There are no revisions allowed to submissions. What is on the electronic application? The Artist Studios Program application contains the following fields: First Name: Last Name: Nickname or Preferred Name/Artist Moniker: Phone Number: Mailing Address: Current CV/Resume: How did you hear about the Artist Studios Programs? (Limit of 50 words) What attracted you to this program and why do you want to participate? (Limit of 50 words) How do you self-identify racially and/or culturally? (Limit of 50 words). OPTIONAL Artist Statement (Limit of 250 words): Proposal (Limit of 250 words). Your proposal should consider the following: - Describe what project(s) you will be working on including processes, techniques and materials - Describe how you anticipate working within the museum s open studios format and how the interaction with visitors will inform your work and process - Include your overall goals and objectives for the program What session(s) are you applying for? Submit five images: - Each image should be no larger than 5 MB and be in the jpg or png formats.

(Limit of 50 words) How will participating in this program help advance your career artistically? (Limit 150 words) Describe how the financial support of this fellowship will help advance your art practice. Include how you will manage your schedule and commit to 40 hours per week over four months. (Limit of 150 words) How do you self-identify racially and/or culturally? REQUIRED How much income did you earn from your art in the last two years? (Gross income, do not deduct expenses) How much income did you receive from all other sources? (Salary/wage, award, gift, interest, etc.) Indicate the members of your household (Check only one): - Applicant only - Applicant and Spouse or Partner - Number of children living with you under (under 18) - Number of parents or dependent relatives (not children under 18) living with you: If you have financial responsibility for relatives not living with you, what is the annual cost? If your spouse or partner works, what is their occupation? Annual income for spouse or partner: How do you file taxes? (Check one) - Single - Married filling jointly - Married filling separately - Head of household - Not required to file Artist Statement (Limit of 250 words): Proposal (Limit of 250 words). Your proposal should consider the following: - Describe what project(s) you will be working on including processes, techniques and materials - Describe how you anticipate working within the museum s open studios format and how the interaction with visitors will inform your work and process - Include your overall goals and objectives for the program What session(s) are you applying for? 3 How are applicants selected? All completed and submitted applications are reviewed by the Artist Studios Selection Committee, a Committee of eight to twelve museum staff and outside professionals in the fields of art, craft and design. Committee members consider the following criteria when reviewing applications: - The applicant s images illustrate a mature body of work that reveals a mastery of techniques, methods, processes and/or materials. - The applicant s proposal is thoughtful and addresses a clear direction/question for pursuit in their work (Project is clearly outlined). - The application takes into account the museum visitor experience. The applicant demonstrates a thorough understanding of the public, interactive nature of the program. - The applicant is aware of the limitations of the Artist Studios space (no open flames or fumes, limited storage, space is communal, etc.). - Priority is given to applicants who work predominantly with three-dimensional materials, and whose practices involve innovative uses of materials, techniques, processes, and concepts. - Teaching experience is a plus, but not required. Due to the high volume of applications, the Artist Studios Selection Committee will only contact selected applicants for interviews. Interviews will take place in late March and April Applicants will be notified by March 15, 2016 if they have been selected for an interview. When do the sessions begin and end? The summer session begins Tuesday, May 31 and runs until Sunday, October 1. The fall/winter session begins Tuesday, October 2 and runs until Sunday, January 29. Artist Studios Program participants are assigned one day per week to work, in addition to working selected Thursday and Friday evenings. Fellowship participants will work 40 hours per week. Days and times will be determined with the Museum, but schedule will include a mixture of weekdays, weekends and evenings. Frequently Asked Questions Can I apply to both the Artist Studios Program and the Fellowship? Yes, but you will only be selected for one program. You must fill out both applications.
4 Can alumni of the Artist Studios Program apply for the Fellowship? No. Alumni are not eligible to apply for the Fellowship or another session of the Artist Studios Program. Is there an application fee? No. What is the studio space like? How much space does each artist have? The Artist Studios are on the 6 th floor of the Museum and are between square feet (walls are adjusted to accommodate other programs). All artists share the space, but have their own storage. Storage includes 3 4 shelves that can accommodate work up to 30 in height and 36 in length. Storage of larger pieces is limited. What tools and equipment will I have access to in the studio? Can I bring my own tools and equipment? The studios are equipped with heavy work tables, two sinks, a ceramic and enamel kiln, a lathe, spray booth, flex shaft dremel, drill press, band saw, and a variety of smaller tools. We highly encourage artists to bring their own specialized tools. Do you have an Internet connection? Yes. Do I have to be a U.S. Citizen to apply? Artists must be citizens or legal residents of the U.S. with a valid SSN or EIN. The Museum does not provide visas. If I am part of a duo or collaborative group, can we apply? Yes, but collaboratives receive the same daily stipend of $125 (individuals are not paid separately). All members of the collaborative must be present for an interview. How will my artwork be presented? Artwork is displayed in the vitrines outside the Artist Studios. At least one example of each artist s work is on display at any given time, with artwork rotating throughout the program. The Artist Studios Program has a dedicated webpage. Residents provide a head shot, up to six images of their work, and a short bio and description of their work. Residents are featured in Museum e-blasts and on social media regularly. Does the museum pay for travel costs or provide housing stipends?
