2 Fondation France-Japon 2 A university think tank bridging Japan and France Created in 2009 and based in, the Fondation France-Japon de l EHESS aims to facilitate and promote intellectual exchanges between Japan and France, with the conviction that Japan is not enough present in French debates and researches. The EHESS (Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales) is one of the most prestigious and international known French institutions for higher education in social sciences. The foundation s main activities include: Inviting Japanese researchers and other Japan experts to French and European educational and research institutions that are in partnership with the foundation Organizing events such as conferences, debates, and seminars Developing original research programs with comparative perspectives Publishing and translating books, journals, and articles Promoting collaboration between academic communities in Japan and France Together with our partners public and private, in Japan and in France we seek to contribute to the development of collaborative research in these two countries and in Europe. Research Topics Industrial dynamics in Asia and in Europe Lessons from economic crises: What balance between the state and the market in the post-crisis era? Diversity of capitalism: comparative study of firms in Japan, Europe, and the United States; research on the sources of competitiveness, with a focus on organization and innovation Demographic, social, and economic challenges in an aging society: What kind of social protection for the 21st century? Beyond innovation, how to encourage the development of new industries? Changing our perspectives on work and consumption Sustainable development: Japanese approaches

3 Organization The Founder Sébastien Lechevalier (Ph.D. of economics) is associate professor at EHESS, where he teaches the Japanese economy. Previously, he has been a researcher at Maison Franco-Japonaise (Tokyo) and a visiting researcher in several Japanese universities (University of Tokyo, Hitotsubashi University and Waseda University). sebastien.lechevalier@ehess.fr Board of Trustees The Board members give both administrative and intellectual guidance to the foundation. There are eighteen members divided into four groups: representatives of EHESS (5 members), founding institutions (4 members), supporting institutions (4 members), and external auditors (5 members). Tokyo Office In 2012, the Fondation France-Japon de l EHESS is planning to open a representation office in Tokyo to facilitate the foundation s exchange with its partners in Japan. Research associates The Fondation France-Japon de l EHESS has 10 associate researchers from various universities in Japan, Korea, Germany, Belgium, the US, and Canada, as well as 3 doctoral and post-doctoral researchers ( Distinguished supporters The Fondation France-Japon de l EHESS is supported by 20 distinguished personalities coming from academia, administration, diplomacy, and business (

This allows corporate donors to receive a tax reduction of up to sixty percent of the donated amount. 5 Events & activities Research programs The Fondation France Japon de l EHESS has launched in April 2011 a three years research research program entitled Is deindustrialization a fatally? Lessons from industrial dynamics in Japan and Korea. The goal is to contribute to the academic and public debates on deindustrialization by gathering an international team of 20 researchers, organizing three workshops (in, Tokyo and Brussels) and a regular seminar at EHESS. The major outcomes of this research program will be the special issue of an academic journal, public policy and corporate oriented reports, as well as columns in newspapers.
