4 Overall Impact Score and Criterion Score Disconnect O"en the overall impact score does not appear to reflect the individual criterion scores No formula for calcula7ng overall impact score from criterion scores Criterion scores are posted by each reviewer prior to the mee7ng, whereas the overall score is the result of scoring a"er discussion of the grant and reflects the mean of the en7re review panel

5 Scores and Reviews Scores posted on Commons usually 1-2 days Summary statement posted no later than 30 days Wait for your summary statement before calling NIH For ques7ons a"er you receive your summary statement, call your assigned Program Officer (PO), usually ini7al to arrange a phone call The likelihood of NIH funding the applica7on Further discussion of the reviewers comments (the PO may have been present at the review) What to address in your resubmission applica7on, if this is your first submission The acceptable bases for appealing the peer review process How to develop a new applica7on, if your resubmission was not successful

6 Award Paylines K Award scores are ranked, and a cutoff score is determined based on the number of applica7ons that can be funded by a par7cular ins7tute Percen7les are generally not used for K awards Payline (impact score or percen7le ranking at which likelihood of funding goes from high to low) is not a guarantee of funding Some ins7tute councils may skip or reach beyond applica7ons within their payline to fund applica7ons to maintain mission focus, balance portolios or limit redundancy

10 Resubmission Policy One resubmission of an unfunded applica7on Following an unsuccessful resubmission (A1) applica7on, applicants may submit the same idea as a new (A0) applica7on for the next appropriate new applica7on due date Resubmissions (A1) must be submi\ed within 37 months of the new (A0) applica7on NIH will not assess the similarity of the science in the new (A0) applica7on to any previously reviewed submission when accep7ng an applica7on for review

11 Revised ApplicaEon IntroducEon Page Point-by-point summary of responses to reviews and revisions in the resubmission Emphasize responses to major concerns, but try to address all concerns Note the provision of new data and experiments where needed Keep tone apprecia7ve of the feedback and respectul and not argumenta7ve when there is disagreement

12 Revised ApplicaEons A thick skin is essen7al Get help and advice from your mentor(s), collaborators and pre-submission reviewers Almost always be\er to wait another cycle and submit a strong revised applica7on that rush to make the next deadline An applica7on can go from not discussed to an outstanding score and funding a"er careful revision and resubmission
