4 4 Project Spotlight New Braunfels City Hall Masters team, led by Lonnie Harper, recently completed the interior build out of the New Braunfels City Hall. Guido Brothers Construction was the general contractor for this project. The footprint of the new city hall is just over 62,000 square feet and now houses all of the departments that were previously officed in the old city hall and several portable buildings. The existing building that the city purchased was previously an Albertson s supermarket, so the wide open floor plan allowed the architect to tailor the space to exactly what the city needed. The new facility has state of the art LED lighting throughout, as well as one of the most sophisticated Lutron lighting control systems Masters has installed to date. The existing 208 volt service was upgraded to 480 volt with all new switchgear and panelboards, as well as a new Cummins backup generator to keep the city s network operational in the event of power loss. The pace of this project and the intricacy of the electrical system were both challenges. Masters would like to thank Guido Brothers Construction for the opportunity and also Lonnie and all other Masters personnel that completed this job on an accelerated schedule.
5 5 EC&M News Q&A - Code Rule for Sizing Short Circuit and Ground Fault Protection for a Motor Feeder Q. What are the Code rules for the identification of branch circuit conductors? A. The neutral conductor of a branch circuit must be identified in accordance with Sec [210.5(A)].Equipment grounding conductors can be bare, covered, or insulated. Insulated equipment grounding conductors size 6 AWG and smaller must have a continuous outer finish either green or green with one or more yellow stripes [ ]. On equipment grounding conductors 4 AWG and larger, insulation can be permanently re-identified with green marking at the time of installation at every point where the conductor is accessible [ (A)].If the premises wiring system contains branch circuits supplied from more than one voltage system, each ungrounded conductor must be identified by phase and system at all termination, connection, and splice points in accordance with 210.5(C)(1)(a) and (b) (see Figure). Identification can be by color-coding, marking tape, tagging, or other means approved by the authority having jurisdiction. The method of identification must be documented in a manner that s readily available or permanently posted at each branch-circuit panelboard. When a premises has more than one voltage system supplying branch circuits, the ungrounded conductors must be identified by phase and system. This can be done by permanently posting an identification legend that describes the method used, such as color-coded marking tape or color-coded insulation. Conductors with insulation that s green or green with one or more yellow stripes can t be used for an ungrounded or neutral conductor [ ]. Although the NEC doesn t require a specific color code for ungrounded conductors, electricians often use the following color system for power and lighting conductor identification: 120/240V, single-phase black, red, and white 120/208V, 3-phase black, red, blue, and white 120/240V, 3-phase black, orange, blue, and white 277/480V, 3-phase brown, orange, yellow, and gray; or, brown, purple, yellow, and graymore Info -
6 6 Employee Spotlight Donnie Alsobrooks Donnie Alsobrooks has been employed by Masters Electrical Services, LTD since April 2016 and is currently a Foreman in the commercial field.. Donnie started in the trade due to his father-in-law being in electrical and eight years later he received his journeymen license. Donnie lives locally in Seguin and has been married for over ten years. We asked Donnie, what would be your least favorite home chore and he responded, any kind of cleaning. However, on his down time he watches Longhorn football games and never misses The Walking Dead episodes. Away from home, he enjoys hunting, fishing and play volleyball at the local complex. When time allows he would prefer to be on his boat, fishing at the coast. Donnie Alsobrooks is an asset and we are looking forward to his continued employment here at Masters Electrical Services, LTD.
7 7 Safety News OSHA s Top Violations in 2016 No. 1 Violation: Fall Protection Fall Protection once again retains its No. 1 position on this important list. These violations are associated with the Fall Protection rules of OSHA , which sets forth requirements for employers to provide fall protection systems for its employees. This category posted 208 more incidents than last year. There were a total of 6,929 violations issued in this category. OSHA announced its preliminary Top 10 list of most cited violations for fiscal year 2016 at the National Safety Council (NSC) Congress and Expo in October. The announcement was made by Patrick Kapust, deputy director of OSHA's Directorate of Enforcement Programs. Although this annual list of the most frequently cited violations almost always features the same hazard categories from year to year, the individual rankings do shift around a bit. This year, eight of the 10 categories held the same position as last year. The two categories that switched positions were Machine Guarding (No. 8) and Electrical Wiring Methods (No. 9). If there's any good news to be had in this year's listing, I guess we could note that the Electrical Wiring Methods category moved down in the list and both Electrical categories saw a decrease in citations as compared to last year's numbers. No. 2 Violation: Hazard Communication Hazard Communication remained in the No. 2 position. The purpose of this group of rules is to ensure the hazards of all chemicals produced or imported are classified and that information concerning the classified hazards is properly transmitted to employers and employees. The requirements of are consistent with the provisions of the United Nations Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS), Revision 3. Unfortunately, this category had the largest increase in violations among the top 10, posting 485 more than last year's total. There were a total of 5,677 violations issued in this category. OSHA announced its preliminary Top 10 list of most cited violations for fiscal year 2016 at the National Safety Council (NSC) Congress and Expo in October.
