2 A LETTER FROM MARGE COMBE, BOARD CHAIR PMIEF Dear Supporters of PMIEF, If 2016 taught us anything, it is that we are in a rapidly changing world, where outcomes are less than assured. If ever there is a time for project management to play a crucial role in preparing us for the future contributing to social good this is it. The future growth and stability of our global economy depends on the ability of educational organizations around the world to prepare individuals of all ages, and from every walk of life, for career and employment opportunities and to help them attain high levels of achievement. Project management expertise embodies creativity, interdisciplinary thinking, and team-based problemsolving all needed in the 21 st century to stimulate economic development and a more innovative workforce. PMIEF s three pillars of focus offer significant contributions to meeting these needs: PM-Capable Nonprofits we maximize the effectiveness of nonprofits delivery of mission through knowledge of project management. PM-Ready Workforce we offer a skill set to vulnerable people who might otherwise have difficulty finding life-sustaining work and assist the unemployed/under-employed to become valuable participants in the 21st century workforce. PM-Knowledgeable Youth we instill project management as a life skill in young people, to help them learn, live, and plan for their futures. Some of our priorities for 2017 include: Expanding our reach in addressing the needs of nonprofits and non-governmental agencies (NGOs). As part of that effort, we will conclude an 18-month project management educational project with major international disaster relief agencies. Collaborating with charitable umbrella and other like-minded philanthropic organizations, we will expand our work with nonprofits providing critical social services. Initiating a program to offer project management training and certificates of completion to vulnerable populations of the workforce, such as people displaced from their primary jobs, returning veterans, and more. Continuing to build project management skills into worldwide school systems, especially in conjunction with emerging education trends focusing on project-based learning, such as Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) education and Career and Technical Education (CTE). Growing our support for PMI chapters who offer social good initiatives on a local level. Your generosity is what fuels these efforts for our mission: to inspire and empower people to realize their potential and transform their lives and their communities through the use of project management knowledge. 3 DONOR SPOTLIGHT: WALTER BOWMAN, PMP Walter O. Bowman knows PMI and PMIEF... from the inside out. He knows where we ve been. He knows what project management can do for a career. He understands how the skills we teach can impact lives. He s been here... almost since the beginning. As a young executive, Walter joined PMI in Back then, he was looking for ways to become the most effective, valuable manager possible. He wanted to learn fast and advance fast, and PMI was just the place. In 1984, Walter became the eighth person to earn the Project Management Professional (PMP ) certificate. Soon after, he helped found the Pittsburgh Project Management Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and became its first executive director. Students, teachers, nonprofit leaders and businesspeople flooded through its doors. For the next 14 years, Walter taught project management skills... changing life after life in the process. He shares, I had to push harder. I had to reach further. I saw such need for project management skills. So I turned once again to PMI. With its global reach and strong membership, I knew we could really make a difference here. Walter jumped in to serve as President of the PMI Pittsburgh Chapter and Vice President of Technical Activities during He constantly sought to innovate with new resources and programs, opening doors for partnerships across Pittsburgh... and he received numerous awards for his contributions. Walter says that his goal in that effort and every other is the same: Leaders are empowered by other leaders. That s just how it happens, and that s just who we are at PMIEF. I want to say that loud and clear to everyone involved with this great organization. We have to lead the leaders if we want to impact the future His work on behalf of PMI and PMIEF continued to expand. In 1999, Walter joined the Executive Committee of the PMI Board of Directors and continued as a Director-at-Large on the PMI Board. As if that weren t enough, Walter served as President of the PMIEF Board of Directors. In addition, he's been a strong, faithful financial supporter for nearly 20 years. When asked why he gave so much time and energy in the service of PMI and PMIEF, Walter s answer is simple: I want to be effective. Always. In everything. Period. In many ways, Walter became the ultimate champion of project management a champion who laid the groundwork for where we are today... and instilled in all of us a vision for the future. 4 A BRAND-NEW RESOURCE FOR YOU Our new Project Management for Career & Technical Education Guide features unique project management-rich curricula for secondary school teachers who desire to integrate project management into their classroom instruction. With curricula that focuses on business, marketing and finance, teachers engage students in hands-on projects that identify connections between school and real-world careers in businessrelated professions. Specifically, students learn how to develop a project charter, define a scope statement and create plans to ensure quality and risk management. Upon completion of each project, teachers encourage students to practice self- and peer assessment, learning how to analyze and improve their skills. We piloted the curricula in nearly 70 U.S. secondary school classes over the past school year with excellent results. Our surveys and interviews with participants revealed that the overwhelming majority believed that project management will help students better manage their time, work effectively with others and prepare for a successful career. Every year, talented, hardworking individuals and organizations apply for funding to contribute to the knowledge and application of project management. The ideas flow into PMIEF from across the globe, and because of financial support from friends and partners like you, we are able to provide these life-changing opportunities. Highlights of this year s awards include the following: The Community Advancement through Project Management Award, which encourages project managers to provide pro bono expertise in project management to nonprofit/nongovernmental organizations. The Donald S. Barrie Award, presented annually at the PMI Global Congress North America by PMIEF to honor individuals making significant project management contributions in the specific areas of design, procurement and construction. The Kerzner Award, named after Dr. Harold Kerzner, bestselling author and project management expert, awards the Kerzner Scholarships to four talented students who are pursuing graduate and undergraduate degrees in Project Management or a related field of study. The James R. Snyder International Student Paper of the Year Award, recognizing students from around the world who develop original concepts in project management. But awards are just one side of this exciting season. PMIEF also helps people around the globe pursue project management knowledge and skills through our Scholarship Programs. The PMIEF Academic Scholarship Program is designed to financially assist qualified individuals in obtaining educational degrees in project management or project management related fields. And it exists because of donors like you, who are committed to developing the next generation of effective project managers. Our Professional Development and Training Scholarships reach into the current business world and give project managers, nonprofit leaders, teachers and administrators the opportunity to pursue project management skills.
