3 Government s Commitment to the Life Science Sector In December 2011 I made a firm commitment to reestablish the UK's global leadership in the life science sector, announcing the Government's ten-year Strategy for UK Life Sciences. By more closely integrating the UK's unique strengths, I believe that we can improve healthcare for patients, attract new investment to the UK, and create new jobs and business opportunities in an increasingly competitive and international industry. David Cameron Prime Minister The Strategy makes the most of the UK s core strengths: Basic science in universities Translational and clinical research Industry The National Health Service (NHS) 3

4 The UK Ecosystem: Connect, Research, Develop, Validate, and Export This increasingly integrated ecosystem is underpinned by a: Supportive business environment Open and flexible regulatory framework Simplified industry access points Industry Academia Patients NHS Research Charities 4

5 Building a Collaborative Research Ecosystem: Active Partnership The UK actively encourages research partnerships between academia, industry, and the NHS: In Northern Ireland, Northern Ireland s Connected Health and Prosperity Action Plan ensures cross sectorial support for health & social care R&D, innovation and widespread deployment of healthcare technologies. Scotland, the Scottish Academic Health Sciences Collaboration facilitates partnerships between Scottish universities and health boards. This offers industry a coordinated system to contract and cost research studies across Scotland. In Wales, the National Institute for Social Care and Health Research Academic Health Science Collaboration maximises links between health boards, trusts, universities and industry to facilitate high quality research and improve healthcare. In England, five Academic Health Science Centres open up routes to market, supporting the development of new therapies and techniques 5

6 UK Science: A Rich Heritage, Vibrant Research Base, and Investments for the Future The UK has a rich heritage of life science discovery that has transformed scientific knowledge and continues to unlock clinical and commercial opportunities PAST PRESENT FUTURE 77 Nobel Prizes and counting for contributions to biomedical science: from the building blocks of the new genomic age to the secrets of cells, to the physics that underpin magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) World-class science + protected science budget Major research funding from the Medical Research Council and research charities like the Wellcome Trust and Cancer Research UK Significant investment were made in next-gen science including genomics, synthetic biology, bioinformatics, stem cells and regenerative medicine Support from Innovate UK to translate science into new products and services 6

7 Life Sciences Organisation Recording Increased Results LSO is tasked each year with delivering on key investment projects and targets and focuses on bringing value adding investment to the UK. There has been a consistent increase in inward investment over the past three years. This year, LSO will continue to focus on value-adding inward investment, attracting investment in priority subsectors and project themes, and enhancing our emphasis on Export Oriented FDI. Results for 2014/15: UK confirmed as the #1 destination for FDI in Europe LSO and our partners helped more than 180 businesses invest in the UK, creating more than 5,500 new jobs and more than 2.2bn in new investment 20% of projects were linked to European, international or global headquarters functions 25% were linked to manufacturing Nearly half involved R&D 4 years on from December 2011: 6bn new investment and over 17,000 new jobs Sources: UKTI Annual Inward Investment Report, OLS and UKTI LSO data 7

Access to Funding A search for UK funding opportunities under specific categories of government funding support. Trade Campaigns presenting global and market opportunities in a co-ordinated programme of activity for UK companies in the specific campaign areas of Digital Health, Experimental Medicine & Clinical Trials, In Vitro Diagnostics and Making Tomorrow s Medicines. Exporting to the US - a toolkit to provide UK companies with the guidance and advice they need to make them Market Ready for the US market. Latest News profiling the latest news for UK life sciences with links to social media platforms. Access Route Map launching March/April an interactive infographic to facilitate online navigation of the UK Life Sciences ecosystem in the specific areas of - Digital Health & Care, Experimental Medicine & Clinical Trials, Medical Technology, Medicines Manufacturing, Regenerative Medicine, and Precision Medicine & Genomics. 8
