1 October 30, 2017 STEMIE Coalition Proposal STEMIE Coalition Proposal: McGraw-Hill Education Nick Briere The STEMIE Coalition, Inc. (860) EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The STEMIE Coalition (STEMIE), a 501(c)(3), is a global alliance of organizations teaching students real-world problemsolving and creative skills through invention education and entrepreneurship activities. The STEMIE Coalition members hold more than 600 invention competitions across the U.S. and have reach into STEM schools and programs in almost all 50 states. Through its programming, K-12 students are introduced and instructed in the areas of innovation, entrepreneurship, sustainability, eco-friendly design, and invention. Major U.S. corporate sponsorships include Stanley Black & Decker and United Technologies, and major foundations like the Paul G. Allen and Lemelson Foundation. STEMIE seeks partnerships with entities to augment invention and entrepreneurship education curricula and competitions in the U.S. and globally, and proposes to work with McGraw-Hill to raise awareness of McGraw-Hill's dedication to innovation, STEM, and gender equality, as well as the good works it does in the community. Specifically, STEMIE proposes this through a Mentor Level 2018 National Invention Convention and Entrepreneurship Expo sponsorship, which will include a sponsorship of the Ohio Invention League state competition, year-round exposure and brand placement across STEMIE s massive innovation network, as well as the various benefits listed in the body of the proposal. BACKGROUND McGraw-Hill Education is an American learning science company and one of the foremost publishers that provides customized educational content, software, and services for pre-k through postgraduate education. McGraw-Hill has a particular focus on Education, with a particular focus on environmental sustainability, emphases upon which STEMIE hopes to build in this partnership. More on McGraw-Hill Education and the good works it does in the community can be found at The STEMIE Coalition is a global consortium of invention education stakeholders whose aim is to formalize project-based invention and entrepreneurship education in primary and secondary schools worldwide, with a near term emphasis on the U.S. and a 2018-onwards vision to expand globally. STEMIE currently has statewide programs in 15 states, invention convention presence in over 20, and will be active in all 50 states plus Washington D.C. within the next five years. STEMIE s U.S. goal is that on an annual basis, 10 million K-12 students are taught invention education through STEMIE programming. More about STEMIE can be found at Due to a considerable alignment in vision and social mission particularly as it relates to community engagement, innovation, technology, and sustainable stewardship the STEMIE Coalition sees the K-12 National Invention Convention and Entrepreneurship Expo as a unique opportunity to champion McGraw-Hill's brand at a widely-visible event commensurate with these same values. The event will be held at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation May 31st through June 2nd, 2018.
2 PARTNERSHIP PROPOSAL: Sponsoring The National Invention Convention and Entrepreneurship Expo (NICEE) NICEE is the first and only national competitive K-12 event focused exclusively on Invention and Entrepreneurship. NICEE 2018 At-A-Glance Starting in 2018, the third NICEE is to be held annually at The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn, MI. Its global counterpart, GICEE, is being held annually at the headquarters of the United States Patent and Trademark Office in Alexandria, VA, starting in The Henry Ford will use PR channel partners to publicize the event, dramatically increasing social, digital, and press presence in 2018; NICEE 2017 was covered by a variety of national news organizations, including WUSA, The New Yorker, US News, NBC, and USA Today. McGraw-Hill Education can present an award at the National Invention Convention - with the Education Award being STEMIE's suggestion. The award can personally be presented during the award ceremony to the inventor and invention your employees see as most deserving. The event is emceed by award-winning Mo Rocca, star of Innovation Nation a production of The Henry Ford. More than 500 student competitors and 1,000 professionals, judges, teachers, and VIPs (including local and state politicians) are expected to attend NICEE 2018 nearly twice of last year. In 2017, educators and students from 18 states participated, and in 2018, more than 25 states and several countries are expected to take part in the celebration and competition in Dearborn. Extensive video is captured from the event and follow-on pieces are produced subsequent to the event, providing ample opportunities for ongoing brand coverage. The event is live-streamed and covered by a number of news sites, massively multiplying the number of impressions a sponsorship brings; a dedicated digital coordinator and PR director for NICEE 2018 have been hired and will grow this impact significantly. STEMIE posts articles, blogs, and social media for each of its respective partners. Sponsors are mentioned and integrated within STEMIE s messaging on a year-round basis including the majority of its public presentations providing an annual opportunity to tie the McGraw Hill's brand with K-12 STEM, Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Women in Tech (57% of NICEE inventors were girls in 2017!). The opportunity to showcase the McGraw-Hill brand alongside US tech giants like United Technologies, Stanley Black & Decker, and Microsoft across thousands of impressions, all while championing missiondriven philanthropy. All sponsors of the 2016 and 2017 events have signed on to re-sponsor in subsequent years.
3 The STEMIE Coalition at a Glance The STEMIE Coalition works with over 30 Affiliate invention and entrepreneurship education programs, covering an estimated 200,000 student inventors across 18 states. The STEMIE Coalition was founded in Since that time, and in fewer than two years, it has founded five separate invention convention affiliate programs, grown to over 20 corporate and foundation sponsors, doubled its staff, developed the first-ever standardized national invention education curriculum, and twice held the only national event dedicated to youth invention and entrepreneurship. As of 2017, 57% of our young inventors are girls, and 33% of our inventors come from financially underserved areas, and 27% are minority. Supporting NICEE helps support the programming of the STEMIE Coalition as a whole, specifically: -Providing free curriculum and developmental resources to almost thirty programs covering an estimated 200,000 K-12 students, inventors, and entrepreneurs around the nation. -Creating new invention education programs and supporting those in the nation s neediest areas. -Banding together and creating a community of innovation practice for STEM, Invention, and Entrepreneurship programs all over the United States and beyond by holding regular meetings and academic events, including the Educators Summit and STEMIE Strategy Retreat. The Ohio Invention League at a Glance The Invention League is a state-wide, Ohio-based non-profit dedicated to bringing Invention Education to K-12 students across the state of Ohio. Invention League reaches over 25,000 students across the state in over ninety school districts, with a particular focus on minority and underserved students. More information on Invention League can be found at Over 25,000 Ohio students participating in the program annually; 7,500 invited to advance to local event, 500 invited to advance to statewide finals, 75 invited annually to Nationals Over 100 school districts, covering 20% of the state public schools Over 100,000 parents, volunteers, company employees, teachers, family-members, and after-school coordinators participate in the program annually
4 The STEMIE Coalition is incredibly excited to further its relationship with McGraw-Hill Education. In discussions with MHE, it was discovered that the most meaningful sponsorship would be one that provided McGraw Hill with exposure at both the national and local event, as well as the stage-setting for a variety of communications initiatives launched therefrom. Thus, this proposal contains a $5,000 Mentor-level sponsorship of NICEE 2018, with a complimentary introductory sponsorship of Ohio Invention League's state event. NICEE 2017 Mentor Level Sponsorship -- $5,000 (Discounted from $10,000) A branded national award to be presented on-stage at NICEE by a McGraw-Hill representative Airfare, hotel, and registration costs paid for one McGraw-Hill representative up to $1,500 Logo and highlight in NICEE Sponsors area of STEMIE Website Invitation to Sponsor Orientation Invitation to Sponsor Training for Participating Staff Ohio Invention League Introductory Sponsorship - Complimentary (Discounted from $5,000) Year-long exposure as a Sponsor of Invention League Signage, booth, and presentation of the Education Award at the Ohio State Finals Web presence, Bi-Annual articles on Worthington s involvement and supporter Quarterly social media posting, and a nationally-published article by The STEMIE Coalition, the National youth invention organization touching an estimated million students, parents, volunteers annually, shared on all national social media channels Ad-hoc Engagements with NICEE, STEMIE, and Ohio Invention League As discussed with Sarah Ebersole, a significant opportunity for McGraw-Hill and STEMIE jointly lies within STEMIE's national curriculum, which is exposed annually to over 500,000 students and 15,000 teachers. As a portion of this sponsorship, STEMIE will identify areas of opportunity for collaboration in its curriculum, setting the stage for a curriculum-focused partnership in the future. These are obligations for which STEMIE will be responsible, and will report its findings alongside its ultimate impact report. Specific deliverables related to curriculum and beyond STEMIE's commitment to appraise opportunities are not a requirement respective to this proposal. STEMIE is likewise committed to being a flexible and accomodating partner, and is both excited and committed to exploring all ways it can aid McGraw-Hill in its continuing mission. To this effect, STEMIE is dedicating Nick Briere as McGraw-Hill's point-of-contact to relay and brainstorm all opportunities for meaningful collaboration. Current NICEE/STEMIE Sponsors Include: United Technologies Stanley Black & Decker The Lemelson Foundation The Paul G. Allen Foundation Arrow Electronics BD Macy's 3M Cantor Colburn LLP For a full listing please visit
