7 THE 2004 REPORT OF CHANCELLOR MARK A. NORDENBERG U N I V E R S I T Y O F P I T T S B U R G H
8 This is the printed version of a report first delivered by Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg at the June 25, 2004, meeting of the University of Pittsburgh Board of Trustees. TThe Victorian writer and artist John Ruskin once advised, Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so you shall become. From the very beginning of our partnership, we have dreamed of building an even stronger University of Pittsburgh. And, inspired by the possibilities, we have worked tirelessly, collectively, and with real determination to make those Cathedral of Learning, Oakland Campus, Pittsburgh shared dreams come true. Mark A. Nordenberg Chancellor
9 3 Now, we are nearing the end of a year of historically high achievement for Pitt. Many of its highlights involve inspiring examples of individual attainment and recognition, and I want to deal with them at some length. But it also was another very good year for Pitt in terms of the benchmarks that we have customarily used to measure our collective progress. Let me reference just three of them today. PURSUING EXCELLENCE IN UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION First, our position in our principal marketplace never has been stronger, with the number of students seeking admission to Pitt s programs continuing to soar. In our benchmark year of 1995, we received just over 7,800 applications for admission to the undergraduate programs offered on the Oakland campus. In 2003, we received more than 17,400 applications for those same programs. And, for this fall s entering class, we received nearly 19,000 applications. That is an increase of more than 140 percent from 1995 to 2004 and an increase of more than 8 percent just in the last year a clear sign that we are maintaining our momentum. As you would expect, then, the admissions process has become far more competitive, and the academic credentials of each entering class have become successively more impressive. We will not be able to make final comparisons involving this year s entering class until the fall term has begun, students have enrolled, and the withdrawal period has ended. But let me offer some quick comparisons based upon the freshman class as it currently is defined those who have declared an intention to be here and have tendered the deposit required to reserve a place. In 1995, 19 percent of our incoming Oakland freshmen ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating classes. For this year s class, pursuing excellence that number currently stands at 46 percent. In 1995, 39 percent of our incoming Oakland freshmen ranked in the top 20 percent of their IN UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION high school graduating classes. For this year s class, that number currently stands at 75 percent. 10 4 AVERAGE SAT SCORE SOURCE: OFFICE OF ADMISSIONS AND FINANCIAL AID MAINTAINING EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH We continue to experience the same kind of outstanding growth in our research funding. In 1995, we attracted more than $230 million in total research support. By 2003, that number had skyrocketed to $513 million an increase of more than 123 percent. And though our books for the current fiscal year are not yet closed, we are conservatively projecting that we will reach the $555 million mark. That would be an increase of more than 140 percent since 1995 and an increase In February 2000, we adopted a statement of ambition, publicly declaring, By aggressively supporting the advancement of Pitt s academic mission, we will clearly and consistently demonstrate that this is one of the finest and most productive universities in the world. In the weeks leading up to that action, we spent time considering and discussing the National Science Foundation s (NSF) rankings for federal obligations for science and engineering research and development. of more than 8 percent during the past year alone. Because of a chronic time lag in the release of those FRESHMEN IN TOP 10% OF HIGH SCHOOL CLASS FRESHMEN IN TOP 20% OF HIGH SCHOOL CLASS maintaining excellence comparative numbers, we were focused on fiscal year Those dollars, as we know, support important work (FY) 1997, the most recent year for which the NSF s 50% 40% 30% 20% 10% 0% 46% 19% SOURCE: OFFICE OF ADMISSIONS AND FINANCIAL AID 80% 70% 60% 50% 40% 30% 20% 10% 0% 75% 39% SOURCE: OFFICE OF ADMISSIONS AND FINANCIAL AID human condition. The expenditure of those dollars has permitted us to increase our own employment base by some 25 percent since 1995 and today supports, directly and indirectly, more than 16,000 local jobs while also providing a principal hope for future economic growth in Western Pennsylvania. The dramatic increase in those dollars also provides one telling measure of the progress we are making in our determined efforts to climb even higher within the ranks of this country s top research universities. IN RESEARCH In FY 1997, we ranked 20th nationally, placing us in very good company. In our February 2000 discussions, though, we expressed the hope that, in the next five years, we might be able to rise to at least 16th in that particular ranking. That, we recognized, would be a difficult undertaking, requiring us to pass Penn State, Duke, Washington, and Wisconsin (the universities then ranked 19th, 18th, 17th, and 16th on the NSF list) and also to make sure that we were not overtaken by such strong institutions as North Carolina, Southern California, and Berkeley universities then ranked not far below us. designed, in a broad range of ways, to enhance the comparative report was then available. 11 Earlier this month, the National Science Foundation released its comparative rankings for federal research and development obligations for fiscal year Over the course of our five-year target period, Pitt streaked from its number 20 ranking, past our aspirational 16th position, to claim the 10th spot on that list. By doing so, we pushed even further into some very exclusive company. Johns Hopkins, Washington, Penn, Michigan, UCLA, Stanford, UC-San Diego, UC-San Francisco, and Washington University in St. Louis are the other universities in the top 10. And in this ranking we are ahead of Columbia, Wisconsin, Duke, Harvard, Colorado, Yale, North Carolina, Minnesota, Penn State, and Cornell the very fine universities comprising the second 10 on that list. None is more important than the talent, commitment, and ambition of the wonderful people who make up the University of Pittsburgh. But an enhanced capacity to support those people also has been critical to our success. Here, let me focus on just one set of numbers. In 1995, our endowment stood at $463.2 million then an impressive total for a public university. We saw that number rise to just under $1.2 billion in And, by the end of the third quarter of this fiscal year, it was close to $1.4 billion. That increase, of nearly 200 percent since 1995, is a product both of the sound management of our investments and of our ability, even in less-than-robust economic times, to keep our billion dollar capital campaign on pace. Embedded in that very large endowment total are the absolutely essential forms of support scholarships ENDOWMENT and fellowships and professorships, for example that securing permit us to nurture high achievement. 13 EExpressed most basically, after all, our mission is to further high achievement within the context of our academic community. And there may never have been a year of higher achievement in (From left) Pitt s University Honors College Dean and Truman Faculty Representative Alec Stewart, 2004 Truman Scholarship winners Jocelyn Horner and Clare Sierawski, and Pitt Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg the history of this University. In fact, I doubt that many universities, over the course of their histories, could claim better years than the one we are about to close. Pitt receiver Larry Fitzgerald's skill and talent were crucial to his leading the Panthers to a fourth consecutive bowl bid. During the 2003 season, he caught at least one touchdown in an amazing 18 consecutive games to set an NCAA record. Fitzgerald went on to claim the 2003 Biletnikoff Award as the best wide receiver in America and the Walter Camp Award as the nation s best football player in U N I V E R S I T Y O F P I T T S B U R G H

The day after our fall Board of Trustees meeting, Prince Andrew visited this campus, bringing with him a very special form of recognition. He came to designate our University a Marshall Center of Excellence, based upon our record of student success in the Marshall Scholarship competition a record that, he declared, had been unsurpassed, in recent years, by any public university in America. In conferring our Center of Excellence designation, he stated, and I now am offering a royal quote, [I]n the Marshall competition [Pitt s] candidates have regularly outperformed students from some of America s most famous universities, including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and the University of Pennsylvania. Those were his words, not mine, and, particularly given the respect those other institutions rightfully enjoy, this endorsement of Pitt student quality has special significance. Within this large and complex institution, we recognize that our most fundamental mission is to provide all of our students with the chance to be the best that they can be in everything they do. And we know that, if we are successful, some of our best will become among the best that anyone can be. The recent triumphs of our students in the Marshall competition provide clear evidence of that, and our current students continued to build on that record as the year unfolded. Moving from autumn to spring, to give just one telling example, our students demonstrated, once again, that they could excel not just in the major British-sponsored scholarship competitions, but in this nation s competitions as well. In fact, for the first time in our history, University of Pittsburgh undergraduates were successful in every one of the highly competitive major American commemorative scholarships. Pitt junior Daniel Armanios, who also has earned two National Science Foundation internships, won a Goldwater Scholarship. In doing so, he furthered a long tradition of success in this competition, joining 29 other Pitt students who have been selected for this honor in the past. The Goldwaters are this country s most competitive undergraduate awards in science, mathematics, and engineering. Three outstanding seniors achieved their national triumphs as juniors. Not long after Daniel won the Goldwater, two other University Honors College students, Jocelyn Horner and Clare Sierawski, were named 2004 Truman Scholarship winners. The highly competitive, merit-based Truman Scholarships are awarded to about 70 college juniors who wish to attend graduate or professional school to prepare for careers in government, the nonprofit sector, or other forms of public service. Pitt was one of only three public universities to win more than one Truman Scholarship this year. Additionally, Gwen Morton and Clare Sierawski (also one of our two aforementioned 2004 Truman scholars) were among 80 students nationwide selected to receive Udall Scholarships. These are the most competitive national awards given to undergraduate students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to pursuing a career related to improving or preserving the environment. high-performing STUDENTS Gwen Morton Pitt Senior School of Arts and Sciences University Honors College 2004 Udall Scholarship Recipient These are enviable achievements. In fact, to put them in proper context, you need to remember that there are some 14 million undergraduate students in America. When a national competition selects 70 or 80 recipients from that huge group and two of the honorees come from Pitt, those students have demonstrated a combination of talent and commitment that has enabled them to overcome very long odds. Certainly, there was no more compelling figure in all of college football than Larry Fitzgerald the Biletnikoff and Walter Camp Awards winner, the Heisman Trophy runner-up, and everyone s first-team, All-American. Every bit as important to us, Larry also was an All-American in character and in class. Chris Taft College of Arts and Sciences 2004 Big East Rookie of the Year His heroics were followed by the all-star performance of our men s basketball team 31 wins overall, the most in school history; 18 wins to start the season, the third most consecutive wins to start a head coaching career in NCAA history; a 40-game home winning streak; a third straight Sweet 16 appearance; a national top 10 ranking; and an outright Big East regular season championship. At the end of the conference play this spring, Chris Taft was named Big East Rookie of the Year; Carl Krauser was named the Big East s Most Improved Player of the Year; and Jaron Brown received the Big East Sportsmanship Award. Jaron Brown College of General Studies 2004 Big East Sportsmanship Award Winner Carl Krauser College of General Studies 2004 Big East Most Improved Player Since we all know that you cannot have high achieving student-athletes unless they are led by outstanding teacher-coaches, it came as no surprise that Jamie Dixon was named Big East Coach of the Year. He was, by the way, the first rookie coach to win that honor in the history of the conference. And it is important to note that, within our own athletic department, Coach Dixon has good company. Our Big East Champion women s volleyball team was led by conference coach of the year Chris Beerman, and our record-setting men s baseball team was led by conference coach of the year Joe Jordano. Extending an incredible record of excellence, our men s swimming and diving team won its eighth straight Big East championship and its 19th championship in the 22 years we have been in the conference. That team was led by six-time Big East men s swimming coach of the year Chuck Knoles and three-time Big East diving coach of the year Julian Krug. 16 trail-blazing FACULTY MEMBERS The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation named Robert Brandom, Pitt Distinguished Service Professor of Philosophy, recipient of a Distinguished Achievement Award in recognition of his exemplary contributions to humanistic scholarship. IIn similar fashion, our Marshall and Goldwater and Truman and Udall Scholarship winners are quick to give credit to the outstanding faculty members who have been their guides on the road to academic success. It is the work of our faculty, after all, that is most directly responsible for creating an environment in which our students can develop their full potential. Of course, given our research mission, our faculty members also are expected to engage in cutting-edge work within their own disciplines. And the recognition won by members of our faculty for those efforts helped make this such a special year for Pitt. U N I V E R S I T Y O F P I T T S B U R G H

The academy includes among its members 150 Nobel laureates and 50 Pulitzer Prize winners. And two faculty members were elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences. Again, some perspective: There were only 72 new members nationally elected to the National Academy and, so, the fact that two of those 72 came from Pitt is quite an accomplishment. The two selected were Susan Amara, recruited just last fall as the Thomas Detre Professor of Neuroscience and chair of the Department of Neurobiology in the School of Medicine, and Robert Drennan, a distinguished faculty member in the Department of Anthropology of the School of Arts and Sciences for more than 25 years. Robert Drennan Anthropology 2004 National Academy of Sciences Inductee Their selection symbolizes the complementary forms of strength now emerging in our faculty. We are continuing to nurture, and benefit from, the work of outstanding long-term faculty members, like Dick Drennan. At the same time, we are more regularly recruiting some of the best talent from the best universities in the world, mainly because they think Pitt is the place where they can most successfully advance their own ambitious agendas. A clear example is Susan Amara, who had been both a tenured faculty member at Yale and the director of Oregon s prestigious Vollum Institute before coming to our University. To give two directly relevant examples, during the course of our current capital campaign, both Herb Boyer and John Swanson have made very substantial contributions to Pitt. More specifically, Herb Boyer has established an endowed chair in molecular biology in the Department of Biological Sciences. And John Swanson s contributions are helping to transform the School of Engineering, enabling us to create both the Swanson Center for Product Innovation and the Swanson Center for Micro and Nano Systems. Fittingly, in this year of very special recognition, two other key members of the Pitt family were recognized for all they have done to further this spirit of giving back. Roger Glunt a distinguished graduate, past president of the Pitt Alumni Association, past president of the National Association of Home Builders, member of the National Housing Hall of Fame, and member of this Board of Trustees received the 2004 Robert L. Payton Award for Voluntary Service during the Accolades and Achievement Awards Dinner of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education in Philadelphia. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to the advancement of the philanthropic tradition and the spirit of volunteerism. Even more recently, Jim Duratz received the University Division Donor of the Year Award from the National Association of Athletic Development Directors at its convention in Dallas. This recognition of a deeply committed friend and extraordinarily generous donor reflects the awareness, far beyond our campus borders, that the spirit of philanthropy is alive and well here at Pitt. For years, members of the Barco-Duratz family have been among this University s most generous supporters. And their impact has been felt throughout this institution from the Duratz Athletic Complex on the South Side, to the Duratz Locker Room at Heinz Field, to the Barco Law Building and Barco Law Library and Duratz Technology Courtroom here in Oakland, to the Barco Center for Continuing Education and Helene Barco Duratz Plaza in Titusville. 22 OUR CONTINUING QUEST FOR HIGH ACHIEVEMENT U N I V E R S I T Y O F P I T T S B U R G H
23 our continuing quest FOR HIGH ACHIEVEMENT John G. Bowman Chancellor SSome 80 years have passed since a former chancellor and members of an earlier Board of Trustees were engaged in planning for the construction of the Cathedral of Learning. In articulating his vision, Chancellor John Bowman declared: The new building is to express that spirit of achievement with such force and sublimity that the whole world will understand. The building is high. It is not high, though, just for the sake of being high. It is only with height that stones can talk the language of courage and sublimity. Such a building belongs in Pittsburgh. U N I V E R S I T Y O F P I T T S B U R G H
24 33 Almost immediately, of course, the Cathedral became this University s signature structure, and it is known around the world as a symbol of our high aspirations. But long after the construction of the Cathedral was completed, the people of Pitt have continued with the process of building. Each of the high achievers I have mentioned today students and faculty and alumni and friends are builders in a different kind of construction process. They are building a better institution and, in many cases, a better community, a better country, and a better world. What is so heartening about this year is the clear evidence that the quality and impact of this other kind of building here at Pitt are being recognized, nationally and internationally. Think about it again selection for the Nobel Prize, the Shaw Prize, the Albany Prize, and the Fritz medal; honors from such groups as the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education and the National Association of Athletic Development Directors; election to the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Society for Clinical Investigation; the receipt of an Andrew W. Mellon Distinguished Achievement Award, a McCann Foundation award, the Frederick Douglass Prize, and a Guggenheim Fellowship; All-American and All-Conference honors; special recognition from the Marshall Scholarship program; and selection for Goldwater, Truman, and Udall Scholarships. And were it not for the limits of time and space, I could add to that list. In terms of achievement and impact and recognition, it has been a great year for Pitt. And despite the old saying, this is one case in which we hope that history repeats itself frequently. In fact, looking forward, I know that working to make sure that there are many happy returns will be our collective goal. Over the course of the past nine years working with ambition, determination, and focus we have effectively met sometimes daunting challenges even while we have aggressively and successfully pursued a broad range of important institutional opportunities. Having stood shoulder-to-shoulder through some difficult times makes sharing this message of good news all the more special.
