To inspire female students of color to become researchers in science, technology, engineering, and math, Alexa founded SOAR, a program that connects disadvantaged Atlanta high school students with Emory students and faculty for mentorship and research opportunities. No matter your background, you should still have the opportunity to have a career in science, she says. One student can guide others and help them along the way. NOAM KANTOR 17C of Clayton, Mo., went deep into number theory with Assistant Professor David Zureick-Brown, resulting in the prestigious Goldwater and Marshall Scholarships. This ability to create and solve difficult formulas could solve cybersecurity breaches or credit card fraud.
