2 Volume 4, Issue 3 Page 2 W ELCOME BACK IVY TECH! By Marcus Brown, Gary SGA President The Welcome Back Celebration was a great experience for me. There were masses of students and staff that attended. There was good music and plenty of food. Everyone seemed to be happy, walking around looking at the different tents. Students learned about the many universities and other colleges that were handing out information. It was a great day with a nice breeze and wonderful sunshine. The event was successful, even though we had to deal with a few bees. We had many prizes to give away, such as: eco-friendly bags, water bottles, buttons, pins, folders, flash drives and hand sanitizers. Just for attending, students received all these things for FREE and who doesn t like getting things for free? I walked around passing out gifts and making sure that everyone was in a good mood and had a happy IVY Tech spirit. S HERIFF ROY DOMINGUEZ SPEAKS FOR C ONSTITUTION DAY By Jonathan Portis, East Chicago SGA President importance of the U.S. Constitution. As we all should know, Sheriff Dominguez became the Lake County Sheriff January 1st Before the start of the program, students received constitution booklets and little novelties which they seemed to enjoy. During the Sheriff s speech he touched on topics such as the drop our rate for Lake County high schools. He also reviewed the U.S. amendments to the Constitution, giving emphasis and insight on each one. Although the lecture was roughly an hour, the audience still stayed very attentive and enthused as they took in all of the knowledge Sheriff Dominguez had to share. A special thanks to the Culinary Arts team that made it possible for everyone to enjoy refreshments afterwards. Ivy Tech East Chicago truly enjoyed having Sheriff Dominguez on our campus and we look forward to having him again soon. On September 17, 2009 Lake County Sheriff Roy Dominguez spoke to the campus students, staff, faculty and the members of the community about the

3 Volume 4, Issue 3 Page 3 V ALPO CAMPUS NEWS B Y MARY EATON, VALPARAISO SGA PRESIDENT Well the semester is well underway and campus life is booming. There have been several activities on campus. On September 4 th, Monster Jobs was on campus for an informational session, Monster College Advantage, which assisted students in understanding how to utilize technology in job seeking and preparing/submitting letters of application and resumes to perspective companies. On September 9 th, Student Welcome Back Day was held on the campus. The SGA grilled and served hot dogs, potato chips and water. There were also several tables offering information about student clubs and organizations, Facebook sign-ups, and representatives from fouryear colleges were available to prospective students. Finally, I would like to take this time to announce again some upcoming activities that are planned for the rest of the semester: October 11 th is the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Merrillville. We invite all students, staff, family, and friends to both participate and donate. October 17 th will be the trip to Great America for Fright Fest. November/December A field trip to see a performance by Cirque de Soleil at the Chicago Theatre in beautiful downtown Chicago is currently in the works for the winter holiday season. I NTRODUCING OUR NEW STUDENT L IFE COORDINATOR! By Brandon Lamberson, Michigan City SGA President Hello again students... it's me, Brandon Lamberson (SGA President). First of all, I would like to thank everyone who came out for our Welcome Back Day. I was able to meet a lot of you while we shared a hot dog and chips. I hope you all got to meet the visiting colleges and more of the staff here at Ivy Tech. I am writing today to introduce to those who don't know her already, our new Student Life Coordinator, Deanna Schoof. She started at Michigan City Ivy Tech in the fall of 2008 as an adjunct instructor in hospitality with almost 10 years experience in the hospitality field. She's a Purdue University Calumet graduate with a Bachelor's of science in Hospitality Tourism Management who is currently deciding on which field she wants to tackle for her masters. Deanna has been an event planner/ coordinator for more than six years! Got experience? She is a die hard Chicago Bears and Purdue Boilermaker fan (and I quote her, "Boiler Up".) Deanna enjoys hunting, backpacking, and anything outdoors. As I was talking with Deanna I had to ask, "With your experience in culinary and hospitality, what is your favorite dish and dessert?" She replied, "Well I'm Polish so I love pastries!! I also make this really good signature appetizer dish called Crab Meat Cheesecake." At first I didn't know what to think until she described it was an appetizer, not a sweet crab meat dessert. I wanted to know what the goals she had now, seeing as how she has done so much at such a young age. She said, " I AM going to visit all fifty states, and stay, before I WILL venture out to different countries." So if you haven't gotten the chance to meet this energetic ball of fun, stop in and see her. Deanna will surely brighten up your day! Her office is located upstairs, room number 305.
