1 U.S. Edition Vol 25 / No 1 Ed Sullivan > Chief Economist Group VP > esullivan@cement.org > (847) Ralph Gozun > Market Intelligence Analyst > rgozun@cement.org > (847) The - January 215 A Monthly Analysis of Trends in the Construction and Cement Industries Cement data for November 214 Focal Points U.S. Plant Information Summary Now Available According to the 213 Plant Information Summary, the U.S. cement industry operates 16 cement plants (99 clinker-producing and 7 grinding facilities). Other plant metrics covered in the Plant Information Summary include types of cement produced by plant, sources of raw material, and fuels used. Contact: Brian Schmidt (bschmidt@cement.org) Statistics at a Glance Portland Cement Consumption Nov-14 vs. Nov-13 = Masonry Cement Consumption Nov-14 vs. Nov-13 = Cement & Clinker Imports Nov-14 vs. Nov-13 = Mortgage Rates Nov-14 vs. Oct-14 = Housing Starts Nov-14 vs. Oct-14 = Nonresidential Construction Nov-14 vs. Oct-14 = Public Construction Nov-14 vs. Oct-14 = Executive Summary GDP (real, seasonally adjusted) grew 2.6% in the fourth quarter, after averaging nearly 4.8% in the previous two quarters. Without further revision, the entire 214 GDP grew at a rate of 2.4%, which had not been seen annually since 21 immediately following the recession. With the recent decline in oil prices and concurrent rise in the value of the dollar, consumer spending is playing a larger role on growth; however, this inevitably leads to greater import levels, which can cause net exports to become a drag on growth. Employment is trending in a positive direction as well. Despite a small moderation in growth for December, 214 saw over 2.5 million jobs created. The Conference Board Consumer Price Index ticked up in December, reflecting an increasingly positive mood about the job market and the economy as a whole. In January, consumer confidence surged its strongest level since 27 a possible indication of what to expect from the labor market in the coming month. Real seasonally adjusted U.S. construction spending was down 1.2% from year-ago levels in November and.4% from October. Nonresidential construction grew 1.2%, while residential activity fell 8.%. Public spending was up from November 213.
