1 2011 UC DAVIS WOMEN S GYMNASTICS NCAA Corvallis Regional Edition March 28, 2011 For Immediate Release UC Davis Athletics Media Relations Phone: (530) One Shields Avenue FAX: (530) Hickey Gym Contact: Mark Honbo (mwhonbo@ucdavis.edu) Davis, CA THIS WEEK Saturday, Apr. 2 - individuals at NCAA Corvallis Regional, 4 p.m. LAST WEEK Idle. NOTES LAST WEEK: UC Davis last competed at the MPSF Championship, edging host Air Force with a team score of to defend its title... The Aggies have won three of the past four championships, surrending the banner in 2009 before winning back-to-back... Senior Marcy Miller won the individual all-around and tied Jessica Rea for the MPSF title on uneven bars... Katie Yamamura scored a on vault to claim that championship and tie a school mark previously set by Jill Henrie (1993) and Flora Bare (2003). UC Davis won a total of 16 All-MPSF awards, boasting the highest RQS on each event plus the all-around... Miller was the only gymnast in the conference to pick up the maximum five awards, leading allarounders at and holding the highest at-large RQS in three of four events (the MPSF awards all-conference honors to the top gymnast on each event plus the next four at-large regardless of team)... The Aggies had all four of the at-large picks on bars: Miller, Michele Hurlock, Michelle Ho and Stacey Nicolini... Rea led the MPSF bars performers at Freshman Anna Shumaker paced the conference vaulters at 9.780, Erika Van Dyke led on beam with a average and Ho was nearly a full point ahead of the floor exercise field at UP NEXT: Miller and Shumaker will represent UC Davis at the NCAA Corvallis Regional, hosted by Oregon State... Meet time at Gill Coliseum is 4 p.m... Fans can follow the action throughout the meet at Shumaker competes in the first rotation (with Michigan State), while Miller will rotate with Nebraska... Competing as teams in the region championship are host OSU, Nebraska, Iowa, Southern Utah, San Jose State and Michigan State... This will be the fifth time the Aggies and SJSU have competed together in Miller finished the regular season with a RQS, the highest by an MPSF gymnast since Air Force s Jessa Liegl compiled a in Besides her five All-MPSF awards, she earned the league s Gymnast of the Week on five occasions: Mar. 15, Feb. 22, Feb. 1, Jan. 18 and Jan Miller s fifth such award came as a result of a all-around at Sacramento State, making her the sixth athlete in school history to hit that milestone... She has won the all-around in five meets, most recently the MPSF Championships... Shumaker compiled a RQS on vault to beat Sac State s Kailey Hansen for the at-large spot... The Aggie freshman has scored a season-high on three occasions: at Cal State Fullerton (Jan. 21), Seattle Pacific (Jan. 28) and at Sacramento State (Mar. 13)... Shumaker delivered vault-beam double wins at both CSF and SPU, among six meet wins for the season... Rea (bars), Van Dyke (beam) and Ho (floor) all were declared alternates at the respective events. HEAD COACH JOHN LAVALLEE: It is a very difficult accomplishment to get to the NCAA regional as an individual. I think both of these athletes have done an outstanding job throughout the season. I think Marcy s 38.8 RQS is the highest in school history. She has hit 41 of 44 routines this season. That s pretty remarkable. Anna, coming in as a freshman, has also done an outstanding job. This is a new vault for her this year. She has never competed the layout full; she started the year doing a tuck full and upgraded during the season. She has done a great job to maintain her performance over the course of the year. Our focus still stays the same: we will prepare the same way, we ll go out on the floor with the same goals and objectives in the way we compete. Is it different that you don t have all of your comrades with you? Yeah, that s a little different. But we won t change the manner in which we conduct our business MPSF ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS All-MPSF honors are bestowed upon the top gymnast from each team plus the next four at-large gymnasts, according to the regional-qualifying scores (RQS) entering the championship meet.
