NOTES RECAP: UC Davis finished second at the MPSF Championships with a , 6th all-time among road scores... Senior Alexis Brown tied for the MPSF title on beam with a record-tying 9.925, then matched that score for the outright win on floor... Freshman Kelley Hebert was announced as the MPSF Gymnast of the Year after the meet, making her the first freshman ever to win that honor. UP NEXT: UC Davis qualfied Brown, Hebert and freshman Gabby Landess to the NCAA Salt Lake City Regional, hosted by No. 4 Utah on Saturday... Live results are available via Sidearm Stats at sidearmstats.com/utah/w-gym/... An interactive video stream can be found at the Utahutes.com website at sports/2018/3/9/ncaa-video-streaming.aspx. UC Davis has now sent multiple gymnasts to the NCAA postseason for seven straight years, a run that includes the 2014 team berth... Brown makes her third straight trip and her second as an all-arounder... Hebert led the four individual AA qualifiers with a RQS, while Brown was tied for second... Landess earned the second qualifier on bars by virtue of a tiebreaker against Courtney Soliwoda... Besides host No. 4 Utah, No. 9 California, No. 16 Auburn, No. 21 BYU, No. 26 Stanford and No. 32 Southern Utah composes the team field... The top two teams, top two all-arounders (not on an advancing team) and outright event winners move on to the NCAA Finals in St. Louis on April Based on RQS, the top all-arounders at this meet will include Utah s foursome of MyKayla Skinner (39.695), McKenna Merrell Giles (39.585), Missy Reinstadtler (39.375) and Kari Lee (39.365); Cal s Toni-Ann Williams (39.520) and Kyana George (39.365); Stanford s Elizabeth Price (39.680) and Kyla Bryant (39.370); BYU s Shannon Hortman (39.370) and SUU s Autumn Jorgesen (39.315)... Sac State s Annie Juarez (39.155) and Caitlin Soliwoda (39.070) join Hebert and Brown as at-large AA qualifiers. JOHN LAVALLEE QUOTES: We have never had two freshmen qualify for regionals. So that s pretty spectacular. The way it went down for Gabby is amazing. She didn t even qualify for all-conference, but her score at the conference championship catapulted her [into the qualifier]. When Sac State s Annie Juarez made the all-around, the Plinkos fell for Gabby to move into a tie for that spot. If they hit, Lex and Kelley are good enough to get an at-large spot for nationals. They have themselves in a really good space, and their training was very good. All that matters right now are the four routines they have to perform on Saturday night. It s our Aggie bubble. We have to take care of our gymnastics. It s a great experience to have two freshmen at the regionals who can come back and say, It s not that big a deal. We re there. 3 Coaching Staff JOHN LAVALLEE Head Coach 12th Year Springfield 86 Now entering his second decade at UC Davis, John Lavallee wasted no time in establishing his mark on the Aggie women s gymnastics program. In his first eight seasons at the Aggie helm, he earned Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year five times. Fourteen of his student-athletes have earned at-large berths to the NCAA region championships in his UC Davis tenure, including two Tanya Ho and Katie Yamamura garnering individual qualifiers in three different seasons. Lavallee has also guided his program to six MPSF team championships, including four straight from 2010 to However, his crowing achievement with the Aggie women s gymnastics program came in That year, UC Davis set or tied team event records on all four events plus the total score of at home against Seattle Pacific on February 28. In all, the Aggies scored seven of their all-time top 10 totals during that year, resulting in a school-record RQS of , a No. 34 national ranking and the program s first team berth to the NCAA postseason since UC Davis finished fifth at the NCAA Fayetteville Regional. Lavallee s student-athletes have also performed in the classroom, winning four straight Marya Welch Awards ( ) for the highest women s team GPA at UC Davis. Additionally, Aggie women s gymnastics earned five consecutive NCAA Public Recognition Awards for Academic Progress Rate ( ) and eight straight NACGWC/W Academic Team honors ( ). Last fall, Lavallee enjoyed yet another milestone achievement, with Tanya Ho entering the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame. The 13-time all-conference honoree became the first Lavallee-era gymnast to earn such accolades. Before arriving at UC Davis, Lavallee enjoyed a successful three-year stint as the top assistant for longtime Yale mentor Barbara Tonry. In the past two seasons, he and Tonry guided six Bulldogs to at-large appearances at the NCAA Northeast Regional. Furthermore, Yale captured an Ivy League title in Prior to his stop in New Haven, Lavallee spent 11 years as director and head coach of the Sterling Academy of Gymnastics in Sterling, Mass. In addition to his work with club s recreational programs, which grew to more than 1,000 students, Lavallee coached champions at the state, regional and national level, plus a member of the 2002 Junior Olympic National Team. He served as meet director at many levels including the 1999 USAG Eastern Championships. Also during his time at Sterling, Lavallee taught gymnastics as a physical education course at Atlantic Union College in Lancaster, Mass. While at the Sterling Academy of Gymnastics, Lavallee earned three USAG Service Awards for his contributions to his sport and served as a member of the USAG State Administrative Committee as Massachusetts Junior Olympic representative. Lavallee was a collegiate gymnast at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. In 1986, he earned U.S. Gymnastics Federation All-America honors on floor exercise and served as team captain. Lavallee earned his bachelor s degree in general studies in 1987, then returned for his master of education in While completing his master s work, he served as a graduate assistant for the Chiefs (now the Pride) and taught gymnastics classes in the physical education department. Lavallee s wife, Teri, served on the Aggie gymnastics coaching staff as an assistant coach. 4 Coaching Staff CAROLYN KAMPF Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator 10th Year UC Davis 07 Former Aggie Carolyn Kampf enters her ninth year on the gymnastics coaching staff in , now working primarly with the vault squad. In both 2011 and 2013, her efforts were rewarded with MPSF Assistant Coach of the Year co-honors. In 2014, Kampf s efforts helped the Aggies score four of their 10 highest vault team scores in school history, including a school-record in a home quad meet on January 26. That served as one of many highlights in a landmark season that saw UC Davis amass a program-record RQS of and earn its first team berth to the NCAA postseason since Originally from All-Olympians Gymnastics Center and Palisades Charter High in Los Angeles, Kampf lettered four years at UC Davis, competing primarily on bars and floor in her final two seasons. She enjoyed a career-best meet against Seattle Pacific on a senior, scoring personal highs of on bars and on floor in the meet. Kampf, who graduated in 2007 with a psychology degree, also captured MPSF All-Academic honors as a junior and senior. She later earned an M.S. degree in counseling with a specialization in career counseling from Sacramento State in In addition to her coaching duties, Kampf served as an academic skills specialist for the Aggie athletics department. JESSA HANSEN Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator 2nd Year Iowa 13 Jessa Hansen, formerly a coach at California and Head Over Heels Athletics Arts, joined the UC Davis women s gymnastics staff in June She works primarily with the beam squad while also serving the role of recruiting coordinator. Hansen served for three seasons as an assistant to Golden Bears head coach Justin Howell, working in all aspects of the Cal program, including recruiting and team promotions. During that time, the Golden Bears finished 16th, 18th and seventh nationally, culminating with last year s appearance at the NCAA Championships -- just the second in program history. She helped Alicia Asturias (2014) and Toni-Ann Williams (2015, 2016) to All-America honors, with Williams later becoming the first Cal gymnast to qualify for the Olympic Games. Originally from the Des Moines, Iowa area, Hansen attended the Univesity of Iowa, where she won two All-Big Ten Conference awards and three Academic All-Big Ten nods during her career from 2009 to She added NACGC/W Scholastic All-America honors from , Big Ten Sportsmanship awards in 2010 and 2011, six total Dean s List appearances, plus a nomination for the 24 Hawkeyes To Watch list in After completing her degree in journalism & mass communication, Hansen served as both a volunteer assistant and sports information contact for women s gymnastics for the 2013 season. TAMARA ROSS Volunteer Assistant Coach 9th Year UC Davis 07 After six seasons as an assistant on John Lavallee s women s gymnastics staff, Tamara Ross announced her retirement after the 2015 season -- ending more than 30 years of club and collegiate coaching. Fortunately, the lure of the gym could not pull her away completely: Ross returned to the program as a volunteer assistant in A former Sacramento State assistant coach, Ross crossed the Yolo Causeway to join the Aggies as Lavallee s top assistant prior to the 2010 season. She served all aspects of the program, working primarily with balance beam in the gym. In 2012, her work in that particular area earned Ross a nod as the MPSF Assistant Coach of the Year. Two years later, during a historic season in which the Aggies earned their first NCAA team appearance since 1998 and compiled a school-record RQS, Ross captured even higher honors: NACGC/W West Region Assistant Coach of the Year. The accolade was well-founded, as UC Davis posted six of its seven all-time best beam scores that year, including the school-record on February 21. Between her tenures UC Davis, Sacramento State and on the club scene, Ross owns more than 30 years of coaching experience. As a club coach and member of the NorCal Coaches Association, she earned Optional Coach of the Year in 1996 and Choreographer of the Year on three occasions (1994, 1995 and 1997). In 2005, Ross was selected to coach the U.S. open women s gymnastics team at the Maccabi Games in Israel. Under her tutelage, the American squad posted a second-place finish and had individuals finish second on floor and beam. More locally, Ross served on the Sacramento Sports Commission local organizing committee, helping bring the 1999 John Hancock U.S. Gymnastics Championships to Sacramento. A 1971 graduate of San Diego State, Ross later earned her master s degree from Sacramento State. She and her husband Arthur have two sons, Brian and Greg. Starting in 2008, the top RQS from each member institution plus the next four at-large gymnasts were named to the all-conference team. In 2014, the MPSF expanded the at-large field to six (to match the number of member teams). Starting in 2016, the conference returned to honoring a first (1) and second team (2). The top six RQS holders, regardless of selection process, make the first team. The remaining six are named to the second team.
