1 SAR-IZONA NEWS ARIZONA SOCIETY SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION Stephen J. Miller, President The SAR-IZONA is a publication of the Arizona Society, Sons of the American Revolution and is published in January, April, July, and October. Articles, suggestions, and ideas are solicited please sent them to the editor, Bill Aurand, E Rainbow Meadow Dr, Tucson, AZ or wraurand@cox.net. Visit our Arizona SAR Website at: Our Webmaster is Robert J. Vint. October, Year Celebration PRESIDENT S REPORT Compatriots All; I hope all of you had a wonderful summer. Late summer is generally a slow period for our events. Our Color Guard, for the first time, marched in the parade in Payson on 20 August. And several members marched in the Labor Day parade in Chino Valley. Thank you for your participation. In September many of you attended or sponsored Constitution Day events. I was able to join compatriots in making historical presentations at public and charter schools. In addition some of our chapters and compatriots celebrated this important day during their meetings or special events. I encourage all members to get involved and represent SAR in as many community events as possible. This is how we show who we are and what we stand for. I was able to attend the SAR Fall leadership meeting in Louisville. Several other members were able to attend also. I thank those compatriots. I am a little biased, but I think Arizona is well represented at these meetings. I invite others in our membership to try to attend either one of the Leadership meetings or the SAR Congress. Our Fall BOM is coming up on 12 November in Chandler. The registration form is attached to this issue. I encourage all members and spouses to attend. The SAR President General, J. Michael Tomme and his wife, Cilla, will be joining us at this meeting. This is a chance for you to meet and get to know them. The BOM meeting will also give you the chance to recognize our military veteran members, especially, those who served in WWII and Korea. I hope all veteran compatriots will make an effort to be there. I ask chapter presidents to promote this meeting to your members. Please note the Supporting Our Nations Veterans campaign information in this issue. Our web site URL will be changed to AZSAR.org. You can still use the old one for a while as it will link to our new one. This is in keeping with SAR branding guidance. SAR wants us to refer to our state society as Arizona SAR. Our URL is shortened for convenience. We will use Arizona SAR when talking or writing about our society. Our new chairman of the Veterans Committee is Robert Sjolin, Palo Verde Chapter. Please give him full support as he takes the reigns. The USS Stark Award worksheets will soon be sent to each regular member (not to juniors). Please fill it out and return it to your chapter veteran committee member, even if you have no input. We need to know you had a copy. They will be due the first week of January. Our Color guard is scheduled to march for the first time in the London Days Parade in Lake Havasu on 29 Oct. I hope the turn out will be good. Contact Steve Monez if you can make it that day for more details. In my quest to visit all chapters this year I was able to attend the Prescott and Colorado River Chapters in September and October. While in Prescott I visited the VA medical facility and aided a disabled veteran search his family ancestry through the SAR Ancestor Search Program. Finally, I hope to see you all at our BOM meeting. Any questions please feel free to contact me, esteinback@steinbackandassociates.co m, and phone: From the Desk of Treasurer General Warren Alter 12 October 2016 Yes, I am alive and well and continuing to enjoy my travels and term as Treasurer General. Nancy and I are continuing our work and efforts both here in AZ and around the country. As Treasurer General, I continue my work with headquarters staff and the various committees that I am assigned as an Ex-officio member. These committees include Budget Committee, Finance Committee, GWEF Fund Board, GWEF Distribution Committee, GWEF Fund Raising Committee, Investment Committee, Merchandise Committee, and Premium Member Medals $25.00 Committee. My travels and meetings around the country have included: Atlantic Middle States Meeting Albany, NY Aug South Central District Meeting Kansas City, KS Aug Williamsburg VA shopping trip for Nancy for Colonial wear Sept 2016 Executive Committee Teleconference Aug 2016 Havelock NC Chartering of new chapter, Patriot Isaac Carter Chapter Sept 2016 Gathering at Sycamore Shoals Elizabethton TN Sep Indiana shopping trip for Warren for Continental uniform Louisville KY Sep 25-Oct 2 Meetings with all staff at Headquarters, Exec Committee, SAR Foundation, and Leadership Meetings. Trustees Approved 2017 Budget. South Atlantic District Meeting Oct 4-8 Spartanburg SC. Attended Kings Mountain Celebration and represented SAR and the PG At all these events, I have been representing AZ, the SAR as Treasurer General, and at most of the meetings campaigning for Secretary General. It is a much more relaxed campaign with my race being unopposed at this point. But my travels serve a valuable purpose that goes far beyond any campaign, in that many of our members nationwide cannot attend leadership meetings or Congress. As such, it is important that General Officers attend district, state, and chapter meetings to hear what our members want and what they feel is important. Listening is far more important than speaking at these events. My week in Louisville was well spent. The President General, Secretary General and I all came in on Sunday and spent the next three days at Headquarters meeting with all staff in small groups. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the top three general officers ever have held such meetings. Many General Officers go individually and spend time at National, but this was an opportunity for us to talk and get to know all the staff. They were free to say anything they wanted and we definitely learned a lot. The staff seemed to appreciate it and it gave the staff that don t know us an opportunity to find out what we are all about. We also spent time meeting with our IT people and the computer people from Blackstone. We have a no nonsense meeting letting them all know about the frustrations and challenges our members and staff have been experiencing with the web site, the new database system, and the new application program. That was a very productive series of meetings. I also spent time with individual staff learning their jobs and what they do. Trust me, until you have sat down with one of our staff genealogists and watched them go through the review and approval process for a new application, you have little appreciation of the work they do for us. This was true in all areas of headquarters. Nancy and First Lady Cilla attended some of our meetings, but the rest of the time they were down in Merchandise working (with a little time off for shopping of course). So we all got to know more about our headquarters operations. The 2

3 Leadership meetings went well and we were very well represented with many AZ members and their ladies in attendance. A reminder, as you will see elsewhere in this newsletter, President General J. Michael Tomme and First Lady Cilla will be coming to NM and AZ for the Rocky Mountain visit. They will be in AZ Friday Nov 11 and leaving Sun Nov 13. We have a Board of Managers Meeting and official visit scheduled at the Hilton Phoenix Chandler on Saturday afternoon and evening. See you there. In the meantime, my thanks to each of you for the work you do with our chapters, the state, and National. AZ is well known across the nation and I am proud to be one of your representatives. A Little Bit of Arizona SAR and Arizona History By David A. Swanson Arizona SAR Historian This edition of the SAR-IZONA will round out information about the 120th Anniversary celebration of the Arizona SAR. Unless you just joined the Society (in which case welcome!) or you have been vacationing on Elephant Island you know that earlier this year we proclaimed Herbert F. Robinson as the Father of the Arizona Society Sons of the American Revolution and on June 13th we provided this Compatriot with a well earned gravestone on his grave (which was previously unmarked) in Albuquerque during a joint Arizona/New Mexico SAR ceremony. I thank all of the Arizona SAR Compatriots who took the time to drive or fly to Albuquerque to make this historic event so meaningful! We all know that it take more than a founder or a president of an organization to make it viable and I am sure that our first Arizona SAR Secretary W. H. Robinson (Herbert s brother) was very busy and active in the formation of our Society. Will was also a very early Arizonan and famous in his own right, as were other charter Compatriots (which you will see in a future articles) but now back to Herbert with a very succinct overview of his life. Herbert F. Robinson was born on June 7, 1865, in Lexington, Ill and moved to Phoenix, Arizona in He was a civil engineer and as such was instrumental in the laying out of canals in Phoenix. He was a staunch Republican and was a member of Sons of Veterans (precursor organization to the current Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War), the Society of the War of 1812 of Ohio, and the Sons of the American Revolution. In March, 1890 he enlisted as a private in Company B, First Arizona Infantry (Arizona National Guard) and was appointed as its Adjutant General on August 5, 1898, with the rank of Brigadier General. In 1892 Charles Poston, the Father of Arizona recommended Herbert F. Robinson into membership of the District of Columbia Society and the 27 year old was approved receiving national number 2194 in September of that year. On June 13, 1896, because of his actions, the Arizona SAR became a reality and he was our president for three terms 1896, 97, and 98. He was our vice president in 1899 and 1900 and is listed as being on the SAR National Press Committee in 1901 and Robinson left Arizona for New Mexico shortly after his term as Adjutant General ended in 1902 moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico where he spent the rest of his life. He worked for the U. S. Indian Service as Superintendent of Irrigation and as such was in charge of all the irrigation works at the pueblos in New Mexico and, as the chief engineer, was in charge of all irrigation matters pertaining to the Indian Service in the western states and territories. Sometime after moving to New Mexico, Robinson joined the New Mexico SAR (which was organized in 1908) and has state number 43 (his Arizona SAR number is 1). He was twice married, once in Arizona and then in New Mexico. General Robinson died on May 17, Prior to this he was the longest living territorial adjutant general and is buried in the Sunset Memorial Park in Albuquerque. SAR 2016 Fall Leadership Meeting Report By Steve Miller The SAR Fall leadership was held 28 Sep 1 Oct 2016 in Louisville, KY. The AZ SAR was represented by eight members. The following is a recap of information of interest to our members: The SAR Membership Committee is asking each state and chapter to have a Mentor Program. This would probably best be assigned to the Americanism Committees. The SAR Genealogy and IT Committees asks that each state designate an IT contact person to interface with and point out issues with the new SAR IT programs, i.e., web site, on-line applications, Sharefile, etc. State and chapter registrars: a. The Find-A-grave is known to 3

4 have errors in it and is not a stand-alone proof; b. On-line applications should be used as much as possible, however, paper copies are still accepted, for now; c. Junior applications MUST be signed by a parent and/or guardian, even if the junior applicant signs (he may sign it). This is a legal document and a signer must be old enough to take oaths. The SAR Color Guard Safety Officer briefed there is a requirement that all muskets must have a frizzen cover and flash guard installed (including replica) muskets. This is a liability issue and will be in the handbook. The SAR trustees have encouraged every chapter to award, during 2016, the Good Citizenship Medal to a worthy individual. The SAR Education Outreach Committee asked that a state coordinator be named and a formalized system be maintained to identify members who participate in living history, school presentations, etc. Also, each member who interacts with youth in these programs must complete a Youth Protection Training program. This also includes CAR, essay programs, Eagle Scouts, poster contests, etc. The state should compile a list of all members who have the certification. The Boy Scouts have an on-line training program that includes a two year certificate. Check their web site. Leadership training information by Steve Monez I just attended the leadership meeting in Louisville and I picked up some important changes. Newsletters A change for all the editors of chapter and state newsletters. The national Newsletter Committee, chairman, Steven Williams, announced that all future newsletters may be sent in for judging via . They no longer need to be sent via hard copy and snail mail. It is important to send in your newsletters as there are very important awards the chapter and the state may receive. The Carl F. Bessent Award is presented to SAR chapter editors for the best multiple sheet and single sheet periodicals. Further details concerning each Bessent Award category may be found here. A certificate is presented during the annual Congress to both first place and honorable mention for each periodical category. The Jennings H. Flathers Award is presented to the state-level society with fewer than five hundred members judged having the best periodical or newsletter. A cash award will be presented for first place and honorable mention from the proceeds of the endowment fund established by his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Flathers. The fund was established in the memory and recognition of Jennings H. Flathers' work and devotion to the improvement of society and chapter newsletters as chairman of the Newsletters and Periodicals Committee. There is a newsletter manual. Follow this link /pages/256/l2ov4km8xmgt.pdf Follow this link to the Scoring criteria: /pages/256/0yqtezyo1rqg.pdf The scoring criteria may change due to the committee meeting and will be published at a later time. Some ideas floated were how to give adequate credit to those newsletters that were filled with pictures and little content as to those with a story and a picture. The Flag Committee develops programs to encourage patriotic respect for the flag of the United States, including Flag Day programs for the week ending June 14th each year. The committee identifies and develops resources on the history of the U.S. Flag for use by state-level societies and chapters. It also evaluates the Admiral William R. Furlong Memorial Award reports submitted by state-level societies for performance recognition at the annual SAR Congress. The Arizona Society won this award this year. A change this year allows flag Certificates to be presented to those organizations flying the very large flags such as auto dealerships with large flags. Education Outreach Program Based on the assumption that statelevel SAR societies are in a better position to know how to access the educational establishments within their respective communities, the Education Committee is responsible for providing a forum for state-level societies to discuss their respective education programs and how to deal with boards of education or state offices that regulate education. Each state-level society is invited to maintain a statement on file at the national SAR Headquarters about its education outreach program(s) for elementary school through high school. Each presenter or anyone working with youth is required to get a Youth Protection Training Certification. I have completed the training and it takes less than 30 minutes. It can be done by following this link. It is not necessary to file with the Scouting organization however will be required to keep a file 4

In the course of our nation s history there are landmark events that initiate a period of evolution for our republic. Only one holds the distinct claim to final liberation of our citizens from an oppressive rule. A battle that shook the foundation of the world s ruling governments, set the stage for the beginning of a new independent nation, and bestowed liberty upon its citizens for all time. The Victory at the battle of Yorktown was the start of our new nation and set the stage for the laurels of freedom that we hold dear. Raso In celebration of National Constitution Day, the seventh grade learners at Canyon Ridge School offered a performance called, Meeting the Founders. Over fourteen founding fathers and mothers were portrayed by our team. To enrich the learning environment fostered by this project, Canyon Ridge was proud to host performers from the Sons of the American Revolution. Seven members of this patriotic organization offered detailed recreations of the words, deeds and accomplishments, of such notable figures as George Washington, John Hancock and Benjamin Franklin. Presentations highlighted the contributions each Founding Father made to the creation and ratification of the United States Constitution. Our learners were impressed by each presenter s depth of knowledge. Their authentic costumes and presentation of the colors were also a big hit with 8

9 children of all ages! In all, members from six different Arizona branches of Sons of the American Revolution, as well as representatives from Daughters of the American Revolution, provided classes with a unique and important insight into the significance of United States Constitution Day. Our students prepared for this special event by gathering biographical information regarding the pertinent contributions of their founders during the American Revolution and the formulation of the United States Constitution. To further personalize their learning experience, students constructed props and developed costumes that reflected an understanding of eighteenth century culture. Youngsters from other grade levels were invited to attend and posed questions, took notes and discussed ideas regarding our nation s most important document. Parents, teachers and community members participated in discussions with our performers. In all, the seventh grade team conversed with over three hundred learners. By promoting a spirit of patriotism and creativity, students at Canyon Ridge brought U.S. Constitution Day to life; while evaluating the importance of the Founders who risked everything, in pursuit of the American ideal.
