3 Business Members Program Committee March13, 2011 Agenda Attachment 1 he meeting was called to order by committee co-chairs Jerry Premo and John Bartosiewicz. Present at the meetings were John Barberis, Bob Buchanan, Joe Gibson, Hugh Harrison, Cliff Henke, Reba Malone, Frank Martin, Angela Iannuzziello, Jeff Baldwin, Raquel Olivier, Mary Anne Collier, Jerry Bustamante, John Walsh, Buddy Coleman, Frank DiGiacomo, and David Boate. he Meeting Notes from the January 12, 2010 meeting were reviewed and approved. Cliff Henke reported that ommy hompson would be the speaker at the business member sponsored breakfast and that he had been retained to work with the business members as part of the business voice initiative. He will serve as a high profile spokesperson and has been carefully vetted with a number of people. With regard to the program sessions at the bus and rail conferences Frank Martin and Bill Correa organized program sessions designed to encourage more business members to sign up for APA s sustainability program. Jerry Premo suggested checking to see what the local agencies are doing in case there is any media in the audience. With regard to possible Annual Meeting program sessions the members suggested the following possible topics: - O&M contracting issue new models of P3 and the message that there is still a role for the private sector. Members noted that Chairman Mica stresses the need for private sector involvement in the operation of high speed rail service, and that delivering the partnership message is important. - Procurement issues. Members noted that this continues to be a valid concern and that why do we keep talking about this could be the intro to the session. Other comments included: talking to the transit board members about procurement is important but that its also important to have balance in interactions with board members since staff are responsible that the discussion should talk about agency requests for cuts in the cost of services the quality of procurement staff the problem with staff who do not sign off on invoices in a timely manner

4 the impact of agency staff turnover and staff reductions that these issues are not much different that what was being said ten years ago that GMs are amazed at some of the stories that they hear about these issues that the session title should be ransit Procurement he Road to Bankruptcy. Michael Melaniphy reported on EXPO. He noted that it is time to make final payment on booth space, that there will be a rail car on the show floor, that work continues to increase DBE participation and that there is a special person at NP working on the effort with Hugh Harrison. Hugh noted that a special program for DBEs to help them with booth expenses had been finalized last week which should help when offered in conjunction with the reduced booth rental rate that is available for them. Michael noted that the issue of making EXPO more sustainable was an emerging issue and he highlighted the effort that AECOM was leading to bring young people to the show floor to introduce them to the industry. With regard to the business member video for EXPO members suggested questions such as what do you see as the value of APA membership, how did you get involved in APA, what it the ROI for you personally from APA involvement and the ROI for your company? hey also suggested interviewing Leadership APA graduates and several other names were suggested. he meeting was adjourned.

6 Bus Conference session: 4 PM Monday Making the Business Case for Sustainability Sustainability is more than the newest buzz word Attachment 2 Sustainability is something that can have a positive impact on the bottom-line for APA business members. In this session business members can learn about APA s sustainability program, how to establish a sustainability program at their company, and how their company can benefit from a sustainability program. he session will include advice and lessons learned from business members who have already done it! he speakers will also look towards the future with a discussion on how sustainability programs may be incorporated in agency procurements in the future and the possibility for industry standards in this area. 13 Business Member estimonials ~~ APA Annual Meeting/EXPO Instead of developing a new business member brochure on how to get involved in APA and the value of APA membership to business members, it was decided that a more sustainable alternative would be to develop a video to address these issues. he video will be used in the business member booth at EXPO and will subsequently be put on the APA website. he questions that will be posed to the video participants could include: Why did you join APA? How have you gotten involved in APA? What are the most important business benefits you get from your membership? What are the most important personal benefits you get from your membership? What reasons would you give to a non member about why they should join APA? How would you encourage an inactive member to get involved in APA? he APA members that will be featured in the video will focus on newer and younger APA members and will emphasize the diverse nature of APA membership. Leadership APA members will be featured. Since the filming will be done at the bus conference, they will drawn from the attendees at that conference. Editing of the video will take place during the summer and the video will be completed in time for EXPO.

19 Attachment 7 COUNDOWN O 2011 ANNUAL MEEING & EXPO Business Networking: Now on the Menu What does business networking mean? More than 750 companies that do business in the public transportation industry are coming to EXPO 2011 which makes New Orleans not only a great place to find new customers, but a premier venue to identify new business partners. On uesday, Oct. 4, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., business-to-business networking will take center stage with the show floor open only to exhibitors and APA business members. Michael Melaniphy, chair of the International Public ransportation Expo Advisory Committee and vice president, public sector, Motor Coach Industries, came up with this idea. he universe of potential suppliers is always changing, he said. his time at the show will give the private sector an opportunity to meet new partners that we could do business with and to learn more about their products and services. It will help us find new ways that we can better meet the needs of our customers. During this first-ever networking event, Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBE) and small business members will gather at the EXPO tram stop nearest to their booth to meet potential partners. Huelon Harrison, chair of APA s Business Member Small Business Committee, said: he buzzwords for the over 60 DBEs exhibiting at the show will be Meet me at my tram stop and let s talk about doing business. An added bonus: APA s business members will sponsor a reception for exhibitors during the networking event. Business networking is an important reason that companies belong to APA, said Chuck Wochele, chair of the Business Member Board of Governors and vice president for industry and government relations at ALSOM ransportation. his year we are sponsoring business networking breakfasts at both the bus and rail conferences, setting the stage for the networking event in New Orleans, he continued. With so many companies in one place at one time, it s an outstanding opportunity for APA business members to make new business contacts and gather new ideas that will help improve the products and services we offer to the public transportation industry. In times like this, business networking is more important than ever, and we re pleased to support this event.
