1 A La Salle Eh! Inside 1st One La Salle Alumni World Congress Gathers LEAD s Lasallians Batch 2017 is Moving Ahead, Driving What s Next DLSL Graduate School Hosts First Research Colloquium Mr. Johnny Sy, FLSAAP Chair (Center), with PARC delegates College of Nursing: 11th Clinical Graduation June 2017 Volume XIV Issue No. 11 An Institutional Publication of DE LA SALLE LIPA
2 FLSAAP leaders welcome PARC delegates at DLSL 1st One La Salle Alumni World Congress Gathers LEAD s Lasallians It was a first of its kind for the Lasallians of the La Salle East Asia District to gather the alumni under one event dubbed the 1st One La Salle Alumni World Congress; while the 3rd Pacific Asia Regional Conference Leaders Congress coincided in the biannual occasion. Meanwhile, the second day was even busier but very productive, as presentations and a forum took place to deepen the Lasallian values and tackle the modern-day risks the youths of this generation face. They were delivered by the stellar Lasallian pillars of the country. The country s Federation of La Salle Alumni Associations of the Philippines (FLSAAP), led by De La Salle University alumnus, Johnny Sy, stepped up and took charge of the inaugural assembly as the colossal task of hosting the affair landed on the lap of the De La Salle Lipa Alumni Association, Inc. (DLSLAAI). A Reconnection with St. John Baptist De La Salle was the subject comprehensively articulated by Br. Michael Broughton FSC. His impeccable recounting of the founder s life unknown to many Lasallians and how dissecting the core values so well that dispelled diversity, supported his appeal that We should find sufficient reason to come together not just to socialize but to come up with impact to the young. On June 16-17, eventful programs took place, one after another. The first day marked the arrival of PARC representatives from Japan, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand. Attendees were treated to a Batangueño hospitality as it highlighted the theme of the welcome cocktail that concluded the initial gathering called the Batangas Night. PARC General Councilor, Br. Ricardo Laguda FSC was present at the PARC meeting, while Br. Jose Mari Jimenez FSC was at the evening affair to share inspiring message to further ignite the Animo of the Lasallians bonding in the name of the founder, St. John Baptist De La Salle. 3 It was precisely the young ones that the subsequent resource speaker, Dr. Ben Teehankee, considered as he focused on the Youth at Risk. From the big picture, which provided a clear depiction of the economy s influence over the youth, up to the basic and perennial challenges that have haunted them for long, it was emphasized that no matter how the problems evolve, it all boiled down to the strong foundation on values that will help the young ones to survive. Expounding on the topic Becoming One La Salle, meanwhile, gave another perspective on its aim, background and future, courtesy of Dr. Carmelita Quebengco AFSC. Speaking of the future included the soon to rise La Salle Botanical Garden that was set to be the venue for educational and recreational purposes as explained by the Project Manager, Amy Chang. To address the challenges and weaknesses of the respective alumni associations, a small group discussion took place to come up with feasible solutions and contributions from different school representatives with the assistance of the present De La Salle Brothers. Festivities later that night finally capped the initial assembly. DLSL, through its President and Chancellor, Br. Dante Jose Amisola FSC, and the DLSLAAI President, Martin Tarnate, turned over the hosting tasks to University of St. La Salle President, Br. Joaquin Martinez FSC.
3 DLSL Graduate School Hosts First Research Colloquium Dr. Emilina Sarreal, resource speaker from DLSU A research colloquium was organized by the DLSL graduate school committee headed by its chairperson, Dr. Wilfreda Dimaano last June 3. Dr. Alicia Botardo, Vice Chancellor for Academics and Research, gave her welcome remarks to all the guests and colloquium participants and extended her congratulatory message to Batch 36 of Master in Management Technology students who just completed their degree. Meanwhile, guest speaker, Dr. Emilina Sarreal from the De La Salle University, shared their university s thrust in ethical research. With the theme Breaking through Excellence in Managing People, Process and Performance, ten MMT students from the aforementioned batch presented their most recent research papers in the field of management. Topics varied depending on their industry affiliation. Engr. Randolf Mendoza, Unit Manager of HGST Philippines, (semi-con manufacturing company) presented the factors affecting HGST employees intention and behavior to use data analytics in their line of work during the plenary session. His presentation was followed by that of Christine Aguila who presented a model that can measure the success of a business continuity plan in the Philippines. Ms. Aguila has worked in various multi-national companies. Lastly, Wendy Bautista, public relations manager of SM City Lipa, presented the effects of shopping mall brand experience and brand personality to customer satisfaction and loyalty. In her closing remarks, Ms. Lani Garachico, Dean of the College of Business, Economics, Accountancy and Management (CBEAM) expressed her appreciation to this initiative, its organizers as well as the presenters. DLSL delegates join International Lasallian University Leadership Program in Rome Engr. Isidro Frio, Vice Chancellor for Administration, and Dr. Edgar Allan Castro, Office of Research and Publications Director, joined other Lasallians in the 11th International Lasallian University Leadership Program held June 4-17, 2017 at the Generalate of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in Rome. The aforementioned program is targeted for university faculty and administration and is specifically designed to assist universities in their ongoing programs of faculty formation and enrichment. Participants in this formation are expected to be resource persons, mentors, and animators of the Lasallian mission in their home communities. Likewise, they are geared to serve as leaders of their institution s efforts to integrate Lasallian charism into the college classroom and academic community. Engr. Isidro Frio and Dr. Edgar Allan Castro ( 4th and 8th from right, second line )
4 Grades 10, 12 on their Big Day Celebrating Lasallian Excellence The DLSL community congratulates its achievers in their milestones and recognizes their hard earned accolades. Manila Foods and Beverages Exposition June 14 to 18, 2017 World Trade Center Metro Manila Grade 10 students at the Moving Up rights Donning their Junior High School uniform for the last time, 661 Grade 10 completers stood tall as they exude the Latin phrase Crescit Gratia Virtuteque (which means He grew in faith and wisdom, lifted from the bible - Luke 2:40-42) written on the De La Salle Lipa sash that adorned their uniform. Meanwhile, Batch 2017 of the SHS wearing their graduation robe was beaming with pride before their mentors and loved ones. The young Lasallians were in the spotlight at two coinciding events, Grade 10 Moving Up and Senior High School Graduation Rites, held on June 6, 2017 as thousands of attendees gathered at the SENTRUM. Fellow alumnus, Dr. Michael Charles Tabora, HS Class of 1993, graced the event as the guest speaker. His message was spoken in the millenials language by using hash tags, #CareerGoals, #ParentalGuidance, #SalamatPoMamSir, #KapwaKoMahalKo and #UnaSaLahatDiyos to underscore and introduce new topics. His deeply rooted Lasallian core values of faith, service and communion in mission led him to pick a profession to preserve life as a doctor. He even believes that the signature La Salle green color represents life and he is a proud bearer of it. As a well-known cardiologist, his take on the ups and downs in career and life in general served as his advice on how to reach success. He even reiterated that it was all hard work, perseverance, education, sacrifice and the love for the craft that kept him on top of the game without losing values and morals. 5 Batch 2017 is Moving Ahead, Driving What s Next College of Nursing: 11th Clinical Graduation The SENTRUM was packed with parents and well-wishers who were in anticipation of the 29th Commencement Exercises of De La Salle Lipa on June 9, A total of 1,497 Lasallians were conferred their respective degrees or certificates and they could barely contain their obvious excitement. The morning rites included the College of Education, Arts and Sciences; College of Information Technology and Engineering; and College of Nursing. Engr. Aisa Alvarez Mijeno (DLSL Computer Engineering, Batch 2006), Co-Founder of the Sustainable Alternative Lighting Corporation (SALt) delivered the commencement address. Her empowering words reflected how driven and strongwilled start-up genius she is. She encouraged the graduates to become fast learner, resilient, creative and resourceful. Meanwhile, the afternoon rites included the College of Business, Economics, Accountancy and Management; College of International Hospitality and Tourism Management; and College of Law. Mr. Emmanuel Montenegro De Ocampo, Chairman of FILREMIT Corporation and Board of Director of the Foundation for Sharing Lasallian Education, shared his time and inspiring message at the conclusion of the graduation rites. The full-blooded Lasallian entrepreneur generously imparted valuable tips as a successful businessman. To persevere, to pray, and to network are the top three guides to a fulfilling career that he shared among the graduates. Magna cum laude, Karla B. Alday (BS Industrial Engineering) and Kathren Kelly A. Bobadilla (BS Business Administration major in Marketing Management) inspired and challenged their fellow Lasallian gradutes during the morning and afternoon rites respectively. A nurse has several roles and [are] called angels without wings, was the poignant statement by the guest speaker, Loretosol Gallardo-Castillo, RN, MAN, Director of Nursing Service at Lipa Medix Medical Center, during the 11th Clinical Graduation held last June 7 at the Capilla de San Juan Bautista de La Salle. With 40-year experience as a professional nurse, it has been quite a journey for her. She attested that embarking in a profession that [may] not [be] easy but I assure [that it] is very rewarding. In fact, her license took her to different lands with greener pasture. Four decades after, she shared in jest that she is now enjoying three citizenships, as a Filipino citizen, American citizen and as a senior citizen. The seasoned nurse related to the various and many ceremonies that a nursing student go through and on top of that is the review or preparation for the board examinations. She deemed though that they are all parts of the process of a nurse-in-the-making. Her confidence in the Lasallian Nursing students led her to an invitation to consider Lipa Medix Medical Center among their options as they are welcome to be a part of the hospital s community.
