We will explore the Nottawa Stone Schoolhouse, St. Joseph County Courthouse, and Sturgis Hydroelectric Dam all centennial reminders of the area s commitment to industrial, educational, and judicial progress.

Legends and Lore of the Great Sauk Trail Robert Sisson, ConservAmerica Southern Michigan has a rich history of Native-American heritage. The Sauk Trail, a Native pathway that began at the Detroit River, ran along much of what is today US-12. Our speaker will address the importance of the Great Sauk Trail and also explain how Potawatomi Chief White Pigeon sacrificed his life to save a European- American settlement in present-day St. Joseph County. Arrival refreshments will be available a.m. Welcome and Opening Keynote Of Icebergs and Inquiries: Michiganders on the Titanic Robert Myers, Historical Society of Michigan In April 1912, the luxury ocean liner RMS Titanic sank during her maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. When the ship went down, many Michiganders a number of whom hailed from Southwestern Michigan tragically lost their lives. Within a week, U.S. Senator William Alden Smith, a native of Dowagiac, convened the U.S. inquiry into the disaster. Join us to learn about the Michigan survivors and victims of the Titanic and Senator Smith s far-reaching quest for answers :15 a.m. Exhibits and Networking Time 10:15-11:15 a.m. Concurrent Session I Can You Dig It? Archaeology in St. Joseph County Thomas Talbot, Historian Local archaeology is fascinating, and this session offers no exception. Join us for an exploration of stone artifacts discovered in northeastern St. Joseph County, including Attica chert originally from Indiana. These artifacts are older than those typically found in Southwestern Michigan some of them are more than 13,000 years old! Camp Fort Hill Through the Ages David Ludders, Historian Camp Fort Hill, located in St. Joseph County, offers cabins, a lodge, and access to scenic Lake Tamarack to visitors to Southern Michigan. Come learn about the site s origins as a Native-American fortification during Michigan s early history and how the 240-acre camp was reestablished in 1928 for a variety of new purposes, including a place for kids to learn outdoor skills.
4 Concurrent Session I continued Bridging Cultures: Sturgis and Wiesloch Mary Beth Brenneman, Sturgis Public Schools (Ret.) Barb Gray, Sturgis Public Schools (Ret.) Ken Rhodes, City of Sturgis Did you know that Sturgis has a sister city in Europe? In 1966, the cities of Sturgis and Wiesloch, Germany, formed a partnership that would allow for an exchange of knowledge and culture. Come hear the storied history of how traveling musical groups, students, and teachers have helped the sister city program grow. Iven Kincheloe: America s First Spaceman Steve Arseneau, Dowagiac Area History Museum U.S. Air Force pilot Iven Kincheloe Jr. grew up in Cassopolis, Michigan. After becoming a fighter ace in Korea, he flew the experimental Bell X-2 aircraft to a record-setting altitude of 126,000 feet in Join us in this session to learn more about America s First Spaceman. Mini-Workshop Fund-Raising to Friend-Raising Paul Keep, Historical Society of Michigan Come to learn the fundamentals of raising money and maximizing results. This workshop will discuss improving your fund-raising efforts, developing a fund-raising plan, expanding your donor base, and finding new donors. The speaker will also review how to create a compelling message that will engage potential donors. 11:15-11:45 a.m. Exhibits and Networking Time 11:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m. Luncheon Keynote At the Depot: The Making of a Museum Mike Mort, Sturgis Historical Society At the Sturgis Historical Museum, small-town exhibits have been created with bigcity pizazz. The developers of the new museum have created an exciting and engaging experience by utilizing multimedia platforming. While many of the museum s audiovisual exhibits have a lavish, expensive look, they are actually relatively simple and low-cost projects. This keynote will explore the development of the Sturgis Historical Museum and how it has incorporated tools and techniques of the twenty-first century. 1:45-2 p.m. Exhibits and Networking Time 2-3 p.m. Concurrent Session II Be Ye Separate: The Amish of Southwestern Michigan Ivan Chubb, Bishop Founded in 1910, St. Joseph County s Amish community of about 1,500 people is among the oldest and largest of its kind in Michigan. This session will explore how Amish beliefs and practices set them apart from the rest of the world, including their neighboring communities in Michigan. Making Over Main Street: Sturgis Restoration Eric Eishen, Sturgis Bank & Trust Company Gene Harrison, VCI Inc. Recent restoration projects have helped revitalize Sturgis main thoroughfare and are bringing the city back to its picture-postcard days and closer to its historical roots. Come hear how the speakers were involved with the renovations and what it takes to return a building to its original glory.
5 Concurrent Session II continued The Birch-Bark Booklets of Simon Pokagon Blaire Topash-Caldwell, Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Potawatomi writer and activist Simon Pokagon published many stories and oral histories in a series of birch-bark books. Pokagon s stories refuted anti- Native prejudices and advocated for the environment and Indigenous peoples rights. Come to learn more about Pokagon s works and the history of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi in Michigan. Mi Casa Es Su Casa: Making a Home in Sturgis Gabe Alvez, Holy Angels Catholic Church The city of Sturgis has a vibrant and growing Hispanic community. This session will highlight the first Hispanic families to come to Sturgis and their backgrounds. The speaker will also discuss the importance of Hispanic culture in new locales and why many Hispanic families have chosen to make their homes in Sturgis. Mini-Workshop Youth and Yore: History for All Ages Connie Locker VerHulst, Holland Museum Ever wonder how to better engage young people with history? In this workshop, the speaker will provide newfound strategies, tips, and suggestions that will better involve children and students in history. These engagement strategies are supported by national visitor studies and museum educational research. 3-3:30 p.m. Refreshment Break and Exhibits 3:30-4:30 p.m. Concurrent Session III Preserving the Union: The 11th Michigan in the Civil War Bruce Gosling, Camp 135, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Bonnie Mort, Sturgis Historical Museum Leland Thornton, Glen Oaks Community College During the Civil War, the 11th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment was formed chiefly from St. Joseph County men. Led by Colonel William L. Stoughton of Sturgis, the regiment fought at the Battles of Stones River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, and more. Come listen to the stories of some of Southern Michigan s Union soldiers. Young s Prairie and the Underground Railroad Michelle Johnson, Western Michigan University In the nineteenth century, African-American men, women, and children escaped and sometimes settled in Michigan as part of an anti-slavery network. Come to learn how Perry Sanford; Elizabeth and William Casey; Rachel, Stephen, and Laura Bogue; and Zachariah Shugart contributed to the Underground Railroad in what was then known as Young s Prairie. Votes for Women: Suffrage in Southwestern Michigan Ruth Stevens, Grand Valley State University Southwestern Michigan women have a history of being active champions for women s rights. Since 1867, they worked with a range of organizations to secure the right to vote in local, state, and national elections. This session explores how those Michigan women helped influence the expanding rights of women in the early twentieth century.
6 Concurrent Session III continued Squabbles Over the State Line: Michigan vs. Indiana Catherine Cangany, University of Notre Dame After the dissolution of the Northwest Territory in 1803, many Michiganders were upset when they were lumped in with the Indiana Territory, rather than creating their own. In this session, the speaker will discuss how the Michigan-Indiana border question was ultimately solved and the present-day border was drawn. Mini-Workshop Small-Town Museum, Big-City Pizazz Mike Mort, Sturgis Historical Society We live in a multichannel, highly interactive world, and keeping your museum at pace with modern technology is important. Creating special, interactive effects in your museum is not as difficult or expensive as one might expect. This workshop will explore how technology and good ideas can transform a museum for twenty-firstcentury audiences. 7 p.m. Saturday Closing Banquet St. John s Episcopal Church s McKenzie Hall 110 South Clay Street, Sturgis, MI Ticket Required Colon: Magic Capital of the World Joe Ganger, Colon Community Historical Society How did Colon, Michigan a small town of 1,200 become a mecca for the magicians of the world? Why did so many vaudeville folks come to town? Why did so many magicians and showmen want to be buried there? Come hear the speaker, dressed as historical magician Harry Blackstone, tell the story of how the tiny town of Colon became known near and far as the magic capital of the world. 23 Sunday, September 23 9:30-10:45 A.M. The history, heritage, and culture of the city will come alive as you explore the places that past residents called home.
