Human Resource Coordinator ancy Shull and Administrative Assistant Laura Kelly attended the Career Fair at the Penn Highlands Community College where they distributed information on station job openings and internships available allong with info on careers in broadcasting. Meteorologists Tony Martin and Mary Ours visited the Harmony Elementary School 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students (approximately 65 students) to discuss careers in TV weather forecasting and broadcasting. A seventh grade student from Divine Mercy Catholic Academy job shadowed Chief Meteorologist Tony Martin to learn the job duties of a TV meteorologist and how to create a TV weather presentation. Sue olan represented WPGH / WPT / WJAC at the Community College of Beaver County Job Fair. She spoke to 35 students about careers and internships in broadcasting and the importance of obtaining an internship. Station representatives ancy Shull and Laura Kelly spoke with approximately 6 people about careers in television and distributed information on how to apply for jobs throughout the Sinclair Television Broadcast Group. At the Home Show sponsored by the Cambria County Home Builders' Association, station meteorologists staffed a weather experience booth to allow visitors to use green-screen technology and learn about the job of a TV Meteorologists. Approximately 5 people visited to try their hand at making weather presentations. Meteorologist Mary Ours visited the Beaver Falls Middle School to explain her job as a TV meteorologist. She detailed the process of creating and presenting a forecast and the academic requirements for a meteorologist. Chief Meteorologist Tony Martin spoke to the third grade students at the Richland Elementary School about the science of weather forecasting and his job as a television meteorologist. He explained his job duties the importance weather forecasting in peoples' lives. Chief Meteorologist Tony Martin visited the Windber Elementary school to explain careers in weather forecasting at reporting the weather on TV. They met potential candidates and reviewed resumes and tapes for current and future job openings across the company. All candidates who stopped by the booth are followed up with and interviews set up where applicable. WJAC ews employees staffed a weather experience booth during WJAC Days at Idlewild Park. Viewers were invited to learn about weather forecasting and try their hand with green -screen technology. Info was distributed on careers in Broadcasting. Approximately 5 cub scouts from Somerset pack 566 visited the WJAC studio to learn about careers in broadcasting and observe a live broadcast of the noon news. The weather anchor and social media reporter described their job duties and education background. The scouts also toured the control room. WJAC participated in a job fair at the Galleria Mall coordinated by Forever Media. Information was distributed on current openings at WJAC and sister station WPGH, how to apply for jobs with Sinclair Broadcasting, and different careers in television broadcasting. RECRUITMET IITIATIVES Date 9//7 /6/7 /9/7 /4/7 /3/7 /7/7 Type of Recruitment Initiative (Menu Selection) Brief Description Of Activity The Chestnut Ridge High School chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (3 students), in preparation to compete in the Broadcast Journalism category, visited the ews Department to learn what is involved in producing a news program. They observed the morning editorial meeting, talked with the executive producer about the process, and observed the live noon news broadcast. Meteorologist Mary Ours visited the Maple Ridge Elementary School in Somerset County to talk about TV weather forecasting and careers in television. She talked about weather phenomena and skills they need to learn to understand weather. A student and staff member from DuBois Central Catholic visited the WJAC Production Department to learn about the process of editing video and producing video campaigns as part of s student career project. Sixteen students from the Media Club of Forest Hills High School visited WJAC to see how a news broadcast is produced from start to finish and then observed a live broadcast at noon. Human Resources Coordinator attended career fair at Johnstown High School to describe careers in television broadcasting to approximately 4 students. Literature was distributed and students were able to ask questions. Meteorologists Tony Martin and Casey Lehecka visited orthern Cambria Elementary School and spoke to 4th graders about job opportunities in broadcasting. They explained the job of TV weather forecasting along with weather phenomena. Meteorologist Casey Lehecka visited the orth Allegheny Senior High School and spoke to science students studying meteorology about careers in broadcasting and TV weather forecasting. Meteorologist Casey LeHecka visited orthern Cambria Catholic School for Career Day. She spoke with students in grades 5 to 8 about careers in broadcasting and meteorology. Students from Somerset Christian School visited the studio to learn about jobs in television and observe a live broadcast of the noon news. RECRUITMET IITIATIVES 7 Date /9/8 Type of Recruitment Initiative (Menu Selection) Establishment of an intern program designed to assist members of the community Brief Description Of Activity The Station Employment Unit WJAC has an internship program as defined below: Program Goal: recruit candidates from local colleges and technical schools and prepare them for entry-level jobs within the broadcast industry. Program Objectives: Develop links with colleges, universities, and technical schools to promote the Station Employment Unit as a prospective employer. Create symbiotic relationship between interns and Station Employment Unit WJAC Provide interns with opportunities to translate classroom theories into industry applications. Interns have the opportunity to develop practical skills that will improve their chances for success in the broadcast industry. Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be attending an accredited institution. Graduate students are also eligible. Preferably, applicant should be communication / journalist majors, although other majors will be considered. The applicant must be at least 8 years of age. The applicants must be in good academic standing as defined by his or her academic institution. The applicant must receive academic credit for their internship experience. He/She must be registered for college credit at his/her institution during the quarter or semester in which the internship is performed. RECRUITMET IITIATIVES 8 9 Date /3/8 3/6/8 Type of Recruitment Initiative (Menu Selection) Participation in Job Fairs Brief Description Of Activity A senior at Armstrong Senior High School headed to Indiana University of Pennsylvania to major in Media Production shadowed a news producer to learn to learn what goes into the production of a newscast. Two station representatives, the ews Director and the Human Resources Coordinator participated in the Job Expo held at Penn State, speaking with approximately - 5 seniors about job opportunities available at WJAC and sister station WPGH. They reviewed the job requirements, explained how to apply, and critiqued resumes and talent reels.
