1 EDucation riefs B Information and celebrations for Gwinnett County Public Schools and district employees Volume 27, Number 5 SPECIAL RETIREMENT ISSUE May 2007 Last bell rings for 301 GCPS retirees As the school year comes to a close and that last bell marks the end of the last day, a record 301 veteran employees will retire from Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS). In total, our retirees have contributed a collective 8,019 years of their lives to education, and a total of 6,019 years to Gwinnett schoolchildren. In fact, 34% of our retirees have worked their entire careers in the classroom, office, cafeteria, bus, or shop in this school system. More than half of these GCPS veterans, 154 retirees, have more than 30 years of service in education. And a handful, five, have more than 40 years in education. Our retirees include 11 principals, a driver with 33 years who plans to return as a bus monitor, and a teacher with 34 years in a Gwinnett classroom. Retirement plans are as varied as our retirees. It s pretty safe to say that most folks with grandchildren have some spoiling in mind. Rest and relaxation are high on the list, to include sleeping late, enjoying sunsets, reading, writing, and gardening. Same for travel, whether to visit family and friends, to kick back on the water or in the mountains, or to take a continent-spanning journey. Many retirees plan to work in new careers or part-time in current jobs and some will volunteer at local schools or with charities. Our retirees will carve out time for recreation and hobbies as well from kayaking, golfing, and running triathlons to blacksmithing, cabinetmaking, and quilting. Whatever their post-retirement plans, best wishes go with all of our retirees, along with our thanks for their dedication to Gwinnett s children. This issue of Education Briefs recognizes the contributions of Gwinnett County Public Schools retirees. In the next few pages, you ll find the names, locations, and years of service for 301 employees including several who retired last summer or during the school year. This list reflects retirees who announced their plans by May 1, and includes only those retirees who requested to be part of the issue when they completed the GCPS Retirement Office questionnaire. A number of retirees chose not to be included. The years of service are self-reported by the retirees. GCPS retirees Anita Andrews Dr. Sara Angeletti Donna M.
