1 The KHEA/KAFCS Scholarship Program In 1960, Mrs. Pauline Massie, then president of the Kentucky Home Economics Association, proposed that KHEA present scholarships to worthy, outstanding college students as a means of perpetuating the profession. In January 1961, Mrs. Rose Mary Brooks was named the first scholarship chair and a sample application form was approved. College and university administrators in Kentucky were informed of this new program and asked to encourage students to apply. At the July, 1961 Executive Board Meeting, Sally Greer, a student at Western Kentucky University was named to receive the first scholarship in the amount of $100. In 1962 the scholarship amount increased to $200. In 1968 the amount was raised to $300 and in 1983 it increased to $500. In 2000 the budgeted amount was raised to $600 but not less than $500. At the beginning of the program, the Board decided that the scholarship would be financed by a 50 cent increase in KHEA dues. Scholarships were later financed by the association s treasury. Present-day policies concerning scholarship funds as listed page 48 of the 2005 KAFCS Handbook include: Scholarship funds will come from fundraisers, e.g., silent auctions, annual meeting exhibits, donations and product sales. The number and value of scholarships given will be determined on the basis of funds raised during the previous year and upon approval of the Executive Board. Earnings exceeding the amount needed shall be deposited in the Association s money market fund. Likewise, funds may be taken from the money market fund, if needed, to reach a minimum (usually $500). Since 1961, students from ten colleges and universities have received scholarships including: Berea College Eastern Kentucky University Georgetown College Midway College Morehead State University Murray State University Spalding University University of Kentucky University of Louisville Western Kentucky University As of Fall, 2007, 136 scholarships have been given for an approximate total of $56,500. By reviewing the list that follows, readers will recognize the names of recipients who have become leaders in Home Economics/Family and Consumer Sciences and other fields. Thanks to the individuals and groups who have
2 contributed to the scholarship fund and congratulations to students who received these awards and became leaders in our profession.
